It’s a very big hotel. We stayed in the premium wing with balcony. The room is newly renovated but there is a strange rusty smell inside the room, and also in some part of the lobby area maybe due to the carpet, which is quite disgusting. We rent a car on the second day, parking is not free, it’s 1000 yen per night for hotel guest. We do not had breakfast or dine in the hotel. So not much comment on their services. However we never feel welcoming as no staffs will greet you except when the time you arrive with their shuttle bus getting off to check in. There’s no greetings when we check out and leave. Just like we were transparent. Maybe we are foreigners? And maybe there are too many guests though, there was no queue by the time to check out as we left at 10:00am. Just wanna to leave asap. The onsen is always crowded. However CP value is high. What you expect from a large resort? It’s nothing comparable to the high end hotel. But for the price we paid it’s fair enough. Location is super convenient. A plus. But we may not return again.

Tucked quietly in the heart of Matsumoto, Richmond Hotel is that kind of place where you check in and immediately feel, “Yes, this was the right choice.” Just a 10-minute walk from the famous Matsumoto Castle, and only a few steps from the main train station, the hotel is perfect for exploring the city on foot. Everything feels close — but not too crowded. The lobby is simple, efficient, and the check-in process is smooth with helpful staff (and English-friendly machines). It gives off a calm business-hotel feel but with the warmth of Japanese hospitality. 🚶♂️ What’s nearby (walking distance): Matsumoto Castle – a national treasure and absolute must-visit, especially during cherry blossom season. Matsumoto City Museum of Art – just 5 mins away, home to works by Yayoi Kusama (yes, the dots queen herself!). 🎨 Nakamachi Street – preserved Edo-style merchant houses turned into cozy cafes, sake shops, and souvenir boutiques. Local izakayas & ramen spots – literally around the corner! 🛏️ Room Experience: We stayed in a twin room — very clean, comfortable, and surprisingly spacious. Soft beds, adjustable lighting, and full amenities including pajamas, skincare sets, and even phone chargers. ☕ Bonus points for: In-room humidifier (helpful in dry weather!) Free drinks in the lobby lounge during certain hours Coin laundry for longer stays ✨ Why we recommend this hotel: Location: It’s so central, you can explore most places by foot. Convenience: Great for family trips or solo travelers who need a “no-stress” base. Comfort: Classic Japanese standards — clean, quiet, and efficient. If you’re heading to Matsumoto and want a place that gives you both comfort and convenience without breaking the budget, this is a solid choice. Plus, waking up and walking to the castle in the early morning light? Unforgettable. 🌸

We have stayed as 2 couples. Here are our review: - The rooms were a bit small but still good enough for a 3D/2N stay. - The onsen was great and clean. After onsen, you should try to free massage chair. - There is a supply of towels daily, however some towels were slightly dirty. - There is an ulimited supply of pijamas and they are very confortable. - An evening drink and a morning coffee are inclusive, not the best tough. To sum up, we enjoyed our stay, it is only 5 mins walk from the main train station and rooms are good for 2 people.

Very pretty, neat and clean hotel that is walkable to anywhere. The hotel look so grand from the outside and the lobby is big and spacious. A lot of food around the area. The room is big and clean, Toilet is big for Japanese standard. They even provide light dinner. I will stay in this hotel again if I come back to Matsumoto.

Location is excellent. There's direct link bridge between the hotel and the Nagano station. So it's very easy to get to the train station with our luggage. We only stayed one night and Nagano is only our transit stop to other attractions. So we didn't manage to see much in Nagano. But we did notice that there are lots of shops and restaurants within walking distance. Staffs are friendly but some don't speak much English.

Wowee!! What a hidden gem. This hotel was small but punched a knockout!! Pricey but you get what you’ve paid for and more! Hidden in Omachi this hotel offers those wanting to go to the ski parks of all with a complimentary shuttle bus. The staff were super friendly and service was so good!! The food was to die for as I recommend the buffet style for breakaways and dinner as it had everything! Private onsen with a private onsen for females which showed their privacy. Gym, kids play room and also indoor pool. The list goes on! Thank you so much!!

Rather old property. Some stains on the sofa, though they do not look like it can be cleaned. Other that that room is generally clean. However, hotel claimed that they do not have aircon during winter season, and said the only way to cool the room was to off the heater (which is the only mode the aircon duct can release), or open the window, though it is prone to bugs entering the room. Not recommended. Can stay at better properties near nagano station at similar price points.

Such a wonderful stay at Hakuba! Service by Mariott stuff was excellent. Shuttle bus arrived on time and the luggages up the bus and to our room. The room had an in-room onsen which was super! There was a quiet camping ground beside where my family spent half a day building snowman and playing. We could call for pizza food delivery on the first day. Convenience store was quite a walk away but manageable if the snow wasn’t so thick.

JJin Ki DadStaying at Shoho in Matsumoto was an unforgettable experience that truly deserves five stars. Nestled amidst the serene landscapes of Nagano Prefecture, this hotel seamlessly blends traditional Japanese elegance with modern luxury. From the moment we stepped into the lobby, we were enveloped by a warm and inviting ambiance that set the tone for the rest of our stay. Our room was a perfect sanctuary—spacious, meticulously clean, and adorned with subtle touches of Japanese artistry. The panoramic views of the Japanese Alps from our window were nothing short of breathtaking, especially when the mountains were bathed in the soft glow of sunrise. The traditional tatami flooring and comfortable futon bedding provided an authentic experience without sacrificing comfort. One of the standout features of Shoho is its exceptional onsen facilities. Soaking in the natural hot springs while gazing at the picturesque scenery was incredibly rejuvenating. The rotenburo (outdoor bath) offered a tranquil escape where the stresses of daily life simply melted away. The hotel's attention to detail extended to these spaces, with beautifully crafted woodwork and stone elements enhancing the overall atmosphere. Culinary delights awaited us at every meal. The kaiseki dinner was a masterpiece—a multi-course feast that highlighted seasonal and local ingredients. Each dish was artfully presented and demonstrated a profound respect for Japanese culinary traditions. The breakfast buffet was equally impressive, offering a wide array of both Japanese and Western options to suit all palates. The staff at Shoho went above and beyond to ensure our stay was exceptional. Their genuine hospitality was evident in every interaction, from assisting with our luggage to offering insightful recommendations on local attractions. Despite any language barriers, their kindness and professionalism shone through. The hotel's location is ideal for exploring the rich cultural heritage of Matsumoto. We were just a short drive from the iconic Matsumoto Castle, one of Japan's most beautiful original castles. Strolling through the historic Nakamachi Street with its classic white-walled storehouses turned boutique shops and cafes was a delightful way to spend an afternoon. In addition to its proximity to cultural sites, Shoho serves as a great base for nature enthusiasts. The nearby Kamikochi Valley offers stunning hiking trails that showcase the unspoiled beauty of the Japanese Alps. Returning to the comfort of the hotel after a day of exploration was something we looked forward to, especially knowing a soothing onsen soak awaited us. In summary, Shoho encapsulates the essence of Japanese hospitality. Every aspect of our stay was thoughtfully curated to provide comfort, relaxation, and cultural enrichment. We left feeling deeply refreshed and with a greater appreciation for the wonders of Matsumoto. Shoho is more than just a place to stay—it's an experience that lingers long after you've departed. We wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone seeking an authentic and luxurious retreat in Japan.

BBalaliya-ayasifutanenfangxuanlingThe hotel is not far from Matsumoto Station, about a 15-minute walk. Free breakfast is provided upon check-in, but it is a pity that I missed the breakfast because I booked a bus to Kamikochi at 5:30 in the morning, so I will not comment on it. There is free coffee and ice cubes on the first floor of the hotel, as well as various daily necessities. The hotel is surrounded by residential areas and is very quiet at night, so you don't have to worry about affecting your rest. Overall, it is a good hotel

GGuest UserThis is a low-key luxury hotel, 10 minutes away from Karuizawa JR Station by hotel shuttle bus, and a taxi cost 1,300 yen, about 65 yuan. I chose it because the hotel has a history and is also the favorite holiday of the Beatles lead singer Lennon. British service is everywhere. The breakfast is very delicious, and the outdoor scene is even more first-class! I like this hotel very much, full of details, and I will choose it again in the future.

OO.K. MACI’ve stayed at many ryokans throughout my travels—often making up half of each trip—but this one felt a bit different. It seemed to be run by just one person, who I assume is the owner. Everything was self-service, which might be understandable considering it was the most affordable option among the ryokans in the area. Most amenities required an extra fee, such as towels. Payment was made by dropping coins into a basket and making your own change, which wasn’t very convenient—especially since I didn’t carry much cash. One thing I appreciated was the luggage delivery service. I was able to leave my bag at the lobby before check-out and have it sent to Toyama Station (for about 4,000 JPY, cash only). What stood out was the creativity in the shared spaces. There were several common rooms designed for relaxing and spending time—perfect if you’re traveling with friends. You could play ping pong, read books, watch TV, or use the canteen, which had a microwave and dishes available. They even had coin-operated massage chairs and a small fitness room. However, I must mention two important downsides: 1. Limited nearby dining options – Many restaurants shown as open on Google Maps were actually closed. The only one that was open had extremely slow service—I waited nearly an hour for dinner. 2. Insects—large ones – Unfortunately, I encountered big insects in my room, which made it hard to sleep. (He even provided insect-catch tape for me while introduce the room) I stayed awake most of the night, worrying it might come back—especially stressful since I had to get up early the next morning to catch a bus to Ogizawa. Minds you, stairs only, need to carry your luggage down by yourself. Overall, while it offers good value for the area and has unique communal features, this ryokan may not suit travelers who prefer full service, cashless payment, or guaranteed comfort.

MMeowVanWhat an awesome experience! The hotel offered exemplary service before we even arrived. Due to special travel arrangements, we arrived late and the staff quick to arrange an in-room bento dinner for us before our arrival. When we got there, we were immediately blown away by the gorgeousness of the hotel. Despite its age, everything was very clean and polished. I can see that great care had been taken to upkeep the hotel and it’s premises, which are extraordinarily beautiful. We couldn’t resist taking pictures even after check-out, and it took us an hour to finally reluctantly leave. Words cannot actually do the place justice, you must visit there yourself. We were very impressed with how delicious the food was, and the attention to detail, including the placement of the food, the coordination of food color. My mouth is still watering as I recall how delicious it was. I had 10 helpings of their prime rib one day. Besides, I had a dietary restriction and the staff were really careful with that, to the extent of reminding me what dishes not to eat everyday at their breakfast and dinner buffet. In addition to excellent food and service, the hotel went out of its way to be very eco-friendly. For every day that we did not need our room to be tidied, we earned points, which can be traded in for ice cream or other goodies. Finally, the staff spoke perfect English. This is rare indeed, and it made everything so much easier and so much more enjoyable. Thanks for the experience!

OO.K. MACGreat location—loved having a Lawson right downstairs! I didn’t realize Big Echo was on the 4th floor; otherwise, I would’ve planned to go for karaoke. But I already had a movie scheduled, so there wasn’t enough time. The view was exactly what I was hoping for. I really enjoy staying in places with windows that offer such a nice view. The only downside was the washing machine. It was quite slow and required coins. I even had to buy drinks from the vending machine just to get enough 100-yen coins for laundry. I guess this kind of old-style machine is still common in Japanese hotels. Unlike the newer machines in China and Thailand that only take about 30 minutes to wash and another 20–30 minutes to dry (with separate machines), this one took significantly longer. Overall, it was a good stay. I slept really well—even overslept a bit! Probably because I had spent the whole day snowboarding and was completely exhausted.

HHanaLocation is great, it is just on the main road and by the lake. I remember there was a Lawon convenient store not far away when we drove past. We stayed there for 1 night. I highly doubt if we were given the wrong room type, as I booked a room that can see the full Suwa Lake, but the room we have got is at the corner. It is because of the cherry blossom season, there are so many mosquitos outside so we couldn't open any window. According to the information provided by the hotel, the mosquitos don't bite human, but create stains on clothings. Anyway, the room has a private onsen. It was quite small, and look a bit old. The water is very hot, though I couldn't smell any sulfur so it is not a real hot spring. As the windows can't be opened, so it is a quite stuffy inside the bathroom. The room has equipped with all amenities, but no bottled water. The hotel mentioned the water is drinkable from the tab. The room is quite clean and spacious. The mattress is quite nice, it was good for taking a rest after a whole day trip. We chose the meal package (breakfast and dinner). They were both Japanese style with a lot of dishes and options. Food is great. Nagano is not a place that produces meat, so mainly there are a lot of vegetables. With the price we paid for, the hotel services, food and everything is quite reasonable. However, the hotel is a bit old. Nothing is special other than providing a clean room to sleep.
