The Perhentian Islands in Malaysia are a true paradise, easily earning the title of the 'Malaysian Maldives.'
I chose the Perhentian Island Resort, and it turned out to be an excellent decision. The hotel is located on the main Perhentian island, right on the edge of a lagoon with crystal-clear turquoise waters. Nearby, there's a picturesque coral reef and a pristine white sand beach adorned with palm trees, reminiscent of exotic 'Bounty' advertisements. Guests are offered secluded bungalows with terraces, most of which boast panoramic sea views. The hotel grounds feature a well-maintained swimming pool and a tennis court. Despite their simplicity, the rooms are equipped with everything needed for a comfortable stay. The buffet breakfasts cater to a wide range of tastes and national preferences, offering fresh and delicious dishes.
The hotel is also home to a variety of wildlife: you can spot squirrels, monitor lizards, newts, frogs, and bats. But the real treat was observing a family of spectacled langurs, who seemed to be enjoying their vacation in this natural haven too!
The very next day after arriving, I went on a snorkeling tour, which allowed me to see the island from different angles, including other hotels and beaches inaccessible from the shore. Subsequent walks around the island, exploring its jungle, checking out other accommodations, and even visiting a neighboring islet, firmly convinced me that choosing Perhentian Island Resort was the right decision.
The beach, the prevailing peace and quiet, and the comfortable atmosphere—it's pure bliss!
I will definitely be back!
The stay was great and hassle free especially if you arrive at Pasir Panjang jetty (Long Beach) then it’s just a few minutes walk to the reception. Room was great but not exactly a wow affair. Daily replenishment of canned drinks and some snacks by the housekeeping service. A few complaints: The wifi in the room was horrible because they had multiple SSID and some of them did not work. Even going from the bedroom to the balcony require finding a different SSID. I suggest that the hotel hire a proper network tech who can advise on getting a unified Wifi SSID. It’s 2026. The technology is already there. Also the A/C compressor is placed at the same vicinity where you would sit so the blowing hot air was like a sauna. Suggestion for improvement: Put in water dispenser so that you don’t need to provide too many plastic bottles per day. I’ve seen some hotels and resorts doing this so it’s not beyond the realm of possibility. Just imagine how many plastic bottles being disposed everyday for such a small island. Overall, great little hotel/resort with nice view and excellent, modern architecture. There were just some niggling issues and practices that could easily be fixed, in my opinion.
We stay there for 3 nights. The frist room we stay Had some ants. Luckily they can change the room for us on the other day.
We have a good trip at there. Love there.
Stayed for 3 nights. Overall, this place has so much potential. The kampung ambience is so peaceful and inviting. The old Istana (palace) transformed into rooms gave the kampung lifestyle feels. Just walking distance to the beach and the scenery of the whole resort is tranquil. Nevertheless, suggest to clean and restore the pond around the resort. Re-do the whole landscaping around the resort and plant all the local flowers, fruit trees and herbal plants. And to install more solar lights. With this new facelift of the whole sorroundings, will surely invite repeating guests. Shoutout to the friendly staffs too. (P/S: suggests to invest on bed bug spray for each room too)
Its a last minute booking and we didn't select for any package. The service is good where they wait for us during arrival and help us to carry our bags, serve light refreshments during check in and the staffs also friendly. The service that need to improve is no staff is available during not peak hours, the call is not answered and the request to change the rusted kettle is being ignored.
The amenities are old and not well managed. The floor is dusted, the mirror frame in the toilet is broken, the balcony wood also broken and it can be dangerous if small kid left alone.
The food is good and the price is reasonable. We pay for the dinner buffet and its quite satisfactory.
Our time at Summerbay Resort was really pleasant. Very friendly staff and very good service. The deluxe pool view room was clean and had good amenities and a nice view of the pool. At no point did it feel like this trip was not worth it. The beach in front of the hotel is wel maintained with plenty of baby black tip reef sharks to see while snorkeling.
The included breakfast was good, with good food and plenty of seating.
For dinner though I would advise to go to Seaview cafe. The dinners and the quality of the food are amazing. Special shoutout to chef Chris for cooking delicious dinners 10/10!
We're writing this review as European guest. Communicating in English was not a hassle at all.
Although the food selection was limited, the taste was good. The hotel's location was relatively secluded, making it suitable for travelers who prefer quiet. When we first entered the room, we were struck by the strong smell of paint. The staff said it was from freshly painted rooms, but the smell made us feel dizzy and nauseous. We asked to change rooms, but the other rooms also had a strong smell. The pillows looked clean, but they were full of mold. There were many ants in the room, everywhere. I slept in one night and got several bites.
I took my family here during the April spring break in Chengdu. The private beach is truly beautiful, a typical 'jellyfish sea' with crystal clear water. Just a few hundred meters from the shore, you'll find a turtle spot – you can even paddle there yourself. There were so many turtles! When someone was feeding them, we saw nearly ten at once. The hotel also offers a lot of entertainment, most of which is free, including tennis and pickleball.
There are Chinese-speaking staff at the front desk, in the restaurant, and even for the turtle explanations, so communication in Chinese was not an issue. The head chef and the turtle researcher are both of Chinese descent; we often chatted with them, and sometimes they even helped us with translations.
The hotel service is incredibly thoughtful, let me tell you about two things. First, while my wife was swimming in Turtle Bay, the lanyard of her waterproof phone pouch broke. The water was probably almost 10 meters deep. She only realized it after returning to shore, and her mood just plummeted. When the staff at the dive center found out, they immediately contacted a diver to search for it. Luckily, they found it, and the phone was perfectly fine and usable inside the pouch – she was absolutely thrilled.
The other thing is, our return journey was very early, we had to leave at 6 AM. The front desk thoughtfully and proactively packed us a generous breakfast to take with us for the road.
Good value for money, with a nice and clean chalet despite a bed that wasn't at all comfortable (very hard) and a sewer smell coming up through the air conditioning. If you ignore all that, the beach is great, with access to other restaurants, excursions, canoeing, and a water taxi. The resort's buffet is also nice, but don't arrive too late. The staff is very welcoming and attentive, and they won't hesitate to give you information about the dishes and other items.
A nice bonus is the massage parlor; don't hesitate to stop by for an excellent, typical Malaysian massage.
The good: Gorgeous resort. Friendly staff. Clean. Comfortable room. Great breakfast spread. It lives up to the Marriott brand for sure.
The bad: Slow service at the restaurants. It looks like the restaurants are understaffed.
There was also room confusion - I booked 2 rooms for 3 nights and 1 room for 2 nights. But when the guests for 2 nights checked in, showing reservation slip for 2 noughts, they were given a 3-night room. When the 3-night guests check in a few hours later, we were told to swap rooms, instead of just making changes in the system. Gosh. It was after we insisted that changes were made in the system instead of the 2 of us packing to swap rooms.
Public areas like the reception area and the Greatroom are like saunas. But we were told that the high cost of diesel due to the war in Iran has forced the hotel to not run their air conditioning on full capacity - this is forgivable.
Great
