🗺️ What is the M50 Art District in Shanghai?

Colourful murals and street art at Shanghai's M50

Hidden in Shanghai’s Putuo District, the M50 Art District was once a busy industrial area along Suzhou Creek. Today, it has transformed into one of Shanghai’s best-known creative hubs, home to contemporary art galleries, open studios, cafés, workshops, and colorful street art inside former factory buildings.

M50 began changing in the early 2000s, when artists moved into the abandoned warehouses looking for affordable studios and creative freedom. Over time, more painters, photographers, and designers joined the area, helping turn it into a lively contemporary art district. Many of the original industrial buildings still remain today, adding to M50’s unique atmosphere.

🎨 What to See in M50 Art District Shanghai

Stepping into M50 isn't like visiting a traditional museum with a set route and an audio guide. Here, everything feels more open and alive. You might stumble upon a minimalist exhibition on the ground floor and then, just two flights of stairs later, find yourself in a studio where someone is painting live.

Let's see what you can find in this picturesque area:

🖼️ Contemporary art galleries

A visitor admiring a contemporary painting with vibrant colours in a Shanghai art gallery

To start with, the most obvious highlight: the art galleries of M50. There are dozens of them scattered among old warehouses and industrial buildings, and the variety is truly impressive. You can find everything from massive abstract paintings to conceptual photography that plays with Shanghai’s urban identity.

Several well-known galleries within the complex have worked with established Chinese artists as well as emerging creators. In fact, many exhibitions on Moganshan Road change so frequently that no two visits are ever the same.

When it comes to Shanghai’s contemporary art scene, you’ll find a fascinating dialogue between tradition and modernity. Expect installations blending Chinese ink with digital video, and new media pieces featuring screens and immersive sound... It’s no exaggeration – there are some truly experimental works to discover.

📌 Top tip for travellers: many galleries are open from Tuesday to Sunday, usually between 10:00 and 18:00. Just keep in mind that some close for lunch or on Mondays, so it’s worth checking the opening times before you head out.

🗿 Sculptures and industrial art

Discover the vibrant entrance of a creative gallery in Shanghai's M50 district, where decorative sculptures are beautifully showcased indoors.

If you take a leisurely stroll through the inner courtyards, you'll discover contemporary sculptures crafted from recycled steel, pieces mounted on old machinery bases, and structures that echo the site's industrial past.

And that’s where the charm lies – not everything is polished or perfectly restored. Many works sit alongside metal beams, old pipes, and worn concrete floors.

It’s not an elegant space in the traditional sense. It’s rawer, more urban – and that’s exactly why it works so well. Plus, several sculptures are outdoors, so you don’t even need to step into a gallery to enjoy them.

📷 Photography and Urban Murals

Photographer holding a professional camera on a city street in Shanghai

If you're a photography enthusiast, you'll find endless inspiration here! Shanghai's street art scene truly comes alive at M50, one of its most iconic and recognisable spots. Prepare to be captivated by colossal murals, ever-changing graffiti that transforms every few months, and vibrant, colourful facades that beautifully contrast with the original red brickwork.

And of course, the visual interplay is incredible, as you'll find industrial brickwork, metal doors, and external staircases, then suddenly come across a neon-lit mural or a giant portrait. Honestly, the contrast works brilliantly on camera.

📌 Photography tip: the best light is usually in the mid-afternoon, when the sun slants between the buildings and creates striking shadows. Plus, there’s more hustle and bustle at the weekends, which can add a real sense of dynamism to your photos.

📍 Top Galleries in M50 Art District Shanghai

If you're planning to explore M50 with a bit of purpose, rather than just wandering past the murals, it's worth knowing where to start.

There are plenty of galleries to explore, and each offers something unique. Some are true icons of contemporary Asian art, while others act as experimental creative hubs. It all depends on what you’re looking for, so here’s a great place to start:

🏛️ ShanghArt Gallery

Interior of a contemporary art gallery in Hong Kong, featuring modern paintings and spacious, white-walled rooms.

ShanghArt Gallery is no ordinary gallery; it’s a true pioneer of Chinese contemporary art and one of the most established spaces in the complex. Naturally, this really shows in the high standard of the exhibitions.

Here, you'll find everything from vast abstract canvases to conceptual installations exploring historical memory, urbanisation and cultural identity in China.

They’ve worked with internationally renowned Chinese artists, so the narrative here tends to be deeper and more ambitious. If you want to understand why M50 is so much more than just a collection of creative workshops, this is the place to be.

🖌️ Yibo Gallery

A museum gallery in Hong Kong with a beautifully decorated ceiling and a visitor admiring an art exhibition.

Then there’s Yibo Gallery, which focuses more on contemporary painting and medium-scale installations; here, the experience feels a little more intimate.

They tend to champion young and mid-career artists with striking visual concepts. You’ll find everything from vibrant acrylics depicting urban life to installations that blend metal and light.

And keep an eye out, as they host events and exhibitions quite frequently. If you're lucky, you might just catch an opening night, which completely transforms the atmosphere. It’s not unusual to find light refreshments and plenty of lively conversation between the artists and visitors.

🎭 Eastlink Gallery

An exhibition space with visitors exploring a gallery and someone leafing through an art book.

Eastlink acts as a cultural bridge. Not only does it showcase local works, but it also serves as a platform for exchange between Chinese and international artists.

Inside its galleries, you'll find conceptual photography, multimedia pieces, and projects blending video and sculpture. If you're keen to explore emerging talent and more daring artistic narratives, it's a fantastic stop. Plus, the space retains much of its original industrial character, giving it a vibe that feels perfectly in tune with its surroundings.

🧊 Polar Bear Gallery

An art gallery entrance at night, featuring an illuminated window display and signage in Chinese and English.

Polar Bear Gallery has a distinct feel that’s both fresher and more visual. The aesthetic here leans towards contemporary illustration, graphic design, and a certain Asian pop vibe.

You’ll find limited-edition prints, manga-inspired artworks, and pieces that blend urban culture with traditional Chinese references. It’s not all about the monumental or the conceptual.

Plus, it’s a great spot if you’re looking to buy something affordable, as many of the pieces are medium-sized and more budget-friendly than in other galleries within the complex.

🌀 H Gallery

Visitors exploring a contemporary art gallery with geometric paintings in Shanghai

H Gallery often focuses on social themes and nature, with installations that play with organic materials, light, and sound. Here, the experience is a more sensory journey.

You might come across suspended structures, projections on brick walls, or sculptures that engage in a dialogue with the industrial space. It’s not uncommon for these exhibitions to raise questions about sustainability or urban transformation.

🚇 How to Get to M50 Art District Shanghai?

Illuminated taxi sign at night and passengers on the Shanghai metro

If you're wondering how to get to M50, the good news is that it’s certainly not tucked away in the middle of nowhere. You'll find it on Moganshan Road in Putuo District, quite close to the Suzhou River, 10 min from Jade Buddha Temple and 2 min from the new "1000 Trees" viral Mall.

Basically, you don't need a full-blown expedition to get yourself there.

🚇 By metro

The easiest way to reach M50 is usually by Shanghai Metro.

Line 13: Jiangning Road Station (江宁路) is the closest and most convenient stop. From there, it’s about a 10-minute walk to M50 along Suzhou Creek and Moganshan Road.

Line 1 / Line 3 / Line 4: Shanghai Railway Station (上海火车站) is another convenient option, with a walk of around 15 minutes depending on the exit you use.

The metro is fast, clean, and easy to navigate. From People’s Square, the journey usually takes around 20–25 minutes, while from Jing’an it’s often under 20 minutes total.

🚕 By taxi

A taxi is another convenient option, especially from nearby areas like Jing’an or central Shanghai. From Jing’an, the ride usually takes around 10–15 minutes in light traffic. From People’s Square or the Bund, expect around 15–25 minutes depending on traffic conditions.

📌 Top tip: show the address in Chinese “莫干山路50号” to the driver. And of course, if you’re using Didi, it’s even easier.

🚌 By bus

There are several bus lines that pass near Moganshan Road, although it might not be the most convenient option if you haven't quite mastered the local system. But... the metro is usually more direct and straightforward for travellers.

The hotel is very well located, for me in the ideal location, excellent breakfast. The air conditioning of my room was not hot, there was no help service with the bags, and I didn't see the car too. However, the location of the hotel and other services compensate for these small disadvantages. The staff are very educated. The fast and efficient parking service is also available.

Excellent location. Good morning coffee. Most of the staff were well educated, and only one official, during breakfast, was a little thick when we asked about the operation of the cheese. In addition, clean hotel, good room, clean bed clothes. It wasn't something that disturbed us, because we left the hotel almost at the check-out time, it was just a suggestion to the manager, and the staff were cleaning the carpets from the floor with a extremely noisy dust aspirator. I believe that the other guests may have been disturbed, so I suggest you look at the schedules for this service, or buy a more silent powder aspirator.

Great option by the sea in Balneário Camboriú. Excellent location, numerous restaurants nearby, relatively close to the Big Wheel (it is possible and extremely pleasant to walk). Spacious rooms, comfortable bed and good bathroom. Furniture a little dated, but functional. Adequate breakfast (nothing pompous, but fully adequate). The entire team was attentive, from the valet, check-in, cleaning team, everyone was always helpful and polite. I have valet parking (paid separately), but it is very helpful (since traffic in BC is very difficult). Some large cars/trucks were in front of the hotel. I was there in January/2024, the hotel was very busy (469 guests, according to reception) and everything worked very well, including elevators (there are three). We stayed on a high floor (12th floor) and the stay was very peaceful. Anyway, it became my first option when looking for a hotel in BC. I got a daily rate almost 50% lower on Trip.com than on other major booking apps.

I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Abel from the Concierge Team at Radisson Blu Hotel Shanghai New World. Before our trip, I contacted the hotel from my home country to arrange a birthday surprise for my friend. Abel was incredibly helpful from the very beginning. He responded promptly, provided detailed information about the room decoration options, and even suggested different color themes to make the setup more special. Throughout the entire process, he stayed in touch, answered all my questions, and ensured that every detail was taken care of. When we arrived, the room looked even better than I had imagined. The surprise brought so much joy to my friend, and it made her birthday truly memorable. No one had ever organized such a surprise for her before, so seeing her reaction was absolutely priceless. I am very grateful to Abel for helping make this special moment possible. I would also like to say a few words about the hotel itself. While the property may not be the newest in Shanghai, it is exceptionally well maintained, clean, comfortable, and full of character. The breakfasts are delicious, offering a great variety of choices, and the location is simply outstanding, making it easy to explore the city. Choosing Radisson Blu Hotel Shanghai New World was definitely the right decision for us. We have been enjoying every day of our stay and creating wonderful memories here. Thank you to Abel and Jessica and the entire hotel team for your warm hospitality and excellent service. We truly appreciate everything you have done for us! ❤️

Our room had a city view, offering a glimpse of the distant Moller Villa's magical wizard hat and the nearby Lyceum Theatre. The location was super convenient; we could walk to many places like the metro station, Shuai Shuai Home Cooking, and Lan Xin Restaurant on Jinxian Road. The hotel's attention to detail was impressive, with different porcelain screens on each floor. The restaurant also offered both Chinese and Western cuisine. A special shout-out to Ms. Fang at the front desk for helping us with a late check-out until 2 PM, which gave our child time for an extra nap. After comparing many hotels in the same price range, I finally chose this one. **Location:** The hotel is situated in Yuyuan, a prime location in Shanghai, just a few minutes' walk from popular attractions like the Bund, Yuyuan Garden, and City God Temple. I arrived at the hotel after 10 PM. The overall ambiance was comfortable and inviting, with a strong sense of design that felt sophisticated without being overdone or artificially profound. Upon entering the room, I must say it exceeded my expectations. It felt more approachable than the pictures suggested, skillfully avoiding a forced 'vintage' look to hide any age. The smart devices and the chic color combination of deep blue and raspberry pink (dragon fruit pink) perfectly complemented the hotel's location. Although the hotel and surrounding commercial area are in the heart of the city, the nearby streets didn't feel overly congested or chaotic. From the elevator lobby, you can catch a glimpse of the Oriental Pearl TV Tower, and the hotel's 270-degree river view rooms even offer sights of cruise ships navigating the river. There's a restaurant on the 7th floor serving a fusion of authentic Shanghainese and Sichuan-Chongqing cuisine. It was raining, so I decided to dine in without high expectations. To my surprise, the food was delicious, the portions generous, and the prices were fair, not inflated. The hotel offers intelligent robot room service, and the TV supports screen mirroring. The toiletries also had a rather distinctive fragrance. Overall, after comparing it with several other hotels, my stay slightly exceeded expectations. Both the location and the overall experience were excellent.

Writing this review is not easy because I always try to stay positive and support hotels where the team genuinely makes an effort. Overall, my first impression of the hotel was good, but as my stay continued, several issues made it difficult to fully enjoy the experience. The biggest problem was the smell in the room. I asked to change rooms, but the alternative room had same unpleasant odor, so I decided to stay in the original one. Because of this, I shortened my planned stay. The smell wasn't just an ”old building” smell—it felt more like excessive humidity or even possible mold. It wasn't surprising to discover that the bathroom exhaust fan wasn't working. Another unpleasant experience was waking up with what looked like insect bites after sleeping in the bed. I cannot say for certain what caused them (probably bedbugs), but it was concerning. I also had a mild allergic reaction after using one of the hotel's umbrellas, so I would recommend wiping them down before use if you have sensitive skin. On the positive side, I truly appreciated the staff's attitude. They sincerely tried to understand my concerns and help, even if they weren't always able to resolve the issues. Their willingness to assist deserves recognition. Breakfast is definitely one of the hotel's strongest points. There is a wide variety of quality food, and it's an excellent way to start the day. The afternoon tea is also a nice benefit, especially with the beautiful view, making it a pleasant place to relax. I hope the hotel addresses the room condition and ventilation issues because the staff clearly care, and with better maintenance, the overall experience could be much better.

I’m so glad I chose the Mehood Elegant Hotel. It was the perfect location — close to everything, not too crowded, yet not too remote either. I traveled solo with my 14-month-old toddler, and he was absolutely spoiled by all the hotel staff. Everyone treated us with so much kindness and care. Jerry checked us in and out and even gave me a cute fridge magnet. The breakfast was delicious with so many options to choose from, the rooms were cleaned daily, and bottled water was always replenished. Xiao Jun also took great care of us, and Yinhe Juan felt like an auntie to us. We looked forward to seeing them every morning at breakfast. Let me start with the cons: The room I stayed in was triangular, which isn't really to Chinese taste. While you can tell the decor uses high-quality materials, it's been over a decade, so the hardware is showing obvious signs of age and isn't very modern. Switches are crooked, and the lights flicker. It's like an experienced beauty; even with efforts to maintain her, her age is still apparent. Aside from the aging hardware, everything else is quite good. The hotel's location is definitely excellent, very convenient, and the surrounding area is lively – it's one of the best spots in Shanghai. As for service, they even gave me a late check-out when I returned late. The restaurant and bar on the first floor have a great atmosphere. Overall, it's quite good. As long as you're not too particular about the newness of the hardware, it's a very good choice for a trip.

City StayCation Just a random weekend to get a couple appointments done in the city, this hotel has the best price in the tourist area for anyone wanting to have fun. Easy to cross the River by ferry (inexpensive) or tunnel (80 RMB). There are restaurants inside the hotel, and it’s maintained quite well, considering that the overall decor is somewhat vintage. The higher floors will give more quiet time. Really comfortable sleeping. I decided not to eat breakfast. The shops on the walkway are more expensive, but it’s still fun to splurge or Just explore. Two really good jazz clubs within walking distance and although traffic does get backed up, being prepared with the proper shoes is helpful . Staff is friendly and attentive. A note about the rooms is that the air conditioner might face the bed. There were not signs of allergens when the temperature is set reasonably. Bathrobes are not part of the room amenities.
