Hotel Okura Amsterdam – the Leading Hotels of the World

Amsterdam Oud Zuid Amsterdam|1.78km from ABN AMRO Corporate Headquarters
We decided to splurge on this 5 star hotel for a long anticipated family reunion. Unfortunately the experience was marred by a series of disappointments caused by utterly incompetent hotel staff. When I called ahead on the day of our arrival to request an early check-in the hotel rep. sternly informed me that I would have to pay a 120 Euro charge for the privilege! We are experienced travelers and never have we encountered such a demand. We took our chances regardless and decided to show up 2 hours early. Sure enough, our room was already ready and we were allowed to occupy it at no extra charge. Things really started to go south when a limousine that I had arranged for separate airport pickup of my daughter’s family through the concierge showed up at the airport unequipped with a baby car seat. I had expressly requested this when I booked the service. This was also specified in the booking confirmation sent by email to me by the concierge. The reaction I later got when I complained to the concierge was that I was not charged extra for the baby seat - as if this was the main issue! Furthermore, this was the first time that I was informed of such a charge, as no mention of this had been made in the email confirmation of the limo reservation which I originally received from the concierge. More importantly, what is more concerning is the utter indifference he showed for the safety of a guest’s infant grandchild. All that concerned him was the money angle to the failure. Things soon got worse. When we checked into our room we lifted the bed cover to discover several hairs and multiple red and yellow stains. Unbelievably, the chambermaid had neglected to change the bedsheets. This, in a 5 star hotel! After we called reception, staff was quickly sent to our room to change them. We never heard further from management about this. We later had dinner at Serre restaurant onsite and left the place hungry. The chef seems to focus on presentation and less on the reasonableness of the portions. My wife had a fish main course which was equivalent to 3 forkfuls. The minuscule dessert was pretty to look at but was grossly inadequate even for one person. The restaurant style is a throwback to the old Nouvelle Cuisine school. For the icing on the cake: a voucher for a round of drinks on the house at the rooftop bar that the guest services manager had kindly given me was bungled by the bar staff. When I arrived home I discovered a mysterious charge of 66 Euros by the Twenty-Third Floor Bar. The bar staff set new standards of incompetence in taking my voucher and charging me anyway.I had to call the hotel for credit but I am losing money anyway from the spread in exchange rates used by credit card companies. To be fair, the Superior View room was extremely spacious and comfortable with a magnificent view. The large pool and ample spa facilities were enjoyable and a significant convenience . Also the reception desk personnel were very professional and welco

Amsterdam Oud Zuid
This is a fantastic hotel. My sister & I stayed for 3 nights and loved it. It’s located in a beautiful and very safe part of the city, very close to the concert hall & the museums. The beds are so comfortable and they refill the water in your room every day. It’s a very easy journey into the city centre on the 12 or 2 tram. There are lots of great places to eat within minutes walk from the hotel and the lovely lady gave us a list of nearby restaurants on our arrival. The hotel is very quiet, we didn’t hear any noise any of the nights. There is a lovely sitting room with an honesty bar that has a good selection of drinks. It was lovely to sit off here and relax either before or after dinner. Great shower in the bathroom too. Staff were so friendly & accommodating, they even got a hot water bottle for me one of the nights when I wasn’t feeling well. Will definitely be back, loved it.

They do not deserve the TripAdvisor award. The location of the hotel isn’t bad BUT it isn’t great either. It’s quite a distance from everything even though public transport is convenient - there’s a bit of walking to do. Nothing to eat around here after 9pm and you need to order deliveroo but the options there are limited too. Service: First, the room had NO air conditioning. It was stuffy and had no ventilation. Told them 3 times and they just left a note saying that they have taken note of this? Bonvoy service? I’ve travelled so much pre Covid - I think the service standards shouldn’t have changed this much? We had one lady Andre (from Barcelona) who was very helpful but the manager and the other front desk people weren’t any help at all let alone service. Second, the room was so so. There aren’t much amenities- just soup and shampoo. No toothbrush etc. Towels are small. Third, breakfast- every day’s breakfast was exactly the same maybe except one dish. I get elemen isn’t the higher grade Marriott group hotels BUT for all other Bonvoy members out there- just stay at the main Marriott or another hotel group.

Second stay at this hotel, this time 4 nights on holiday. The hotel is located at a commercial, but pleasant area, with good public transportation options. We preferred it to the chaos of central Amsterdam, including a fair share of dubious characters we saw there on sightseeing. We were welcomed in a courteous and pleasant manner (thank you Tim for this, and for good tips regarding transportation)., and service was good throughout our stay. The common areas and the room were pleasant and clean. The bed was good, the bathroom large and well-maintained. Breakfast was a continental fare with no extras, but good quality ingredients, both beverages and food. Few comments regarding things we liked less: 1. Water pressure in our room (highest floor, # 11) was too weak for an adequate shower. Uncertain how it is on lower floors, but this was frustrating. 2. Room service needs improvement. We ordered burgers, to be prepared medium, and received charred, over-well-done meat, with charred buns too. 3. We were happy to learn there was jazz music in the bar on Thursday. Alas, these were two fairly quiet guitars, drowned in a sea of yelling and laughing guests, People's behavior is by no means something the hotel can or should control. Nevertheless, should the music be audible, it may be better to bring a singer with a piano and a set of drums. Overall a pleasant stay at a good hotel.

Not the best, can't say I'm impressed.. Room was freezing cold and asked several times to send someone to fix the aircon as it blew out cold air, first time i was ignored, 30 mins later when i rang down again, receptionist told me all she could do was bring a extra blanket and i asked for different room they refused and said they had no one to fix the heating, totally unacceptable, they brought a small heater and told us to leave the aircon on blowing out cold air (which we turned off as it wasn't heating the room up ), since then we found out the temperature doesn't go over a certain temp and all rooms are the same they knew this too, so we were stuck with a small heater to keep the room warm which hardly kept it warm. They don't care that the room isn't warm enough for the guests or whether you will leave. Once they have your money it's tough. I wasn't keen on the breakfast it wasn't quality, although we paid for the 3 nights with breakfast we only went for breakfast once. Poor attitude from reception. I didn't pay for a room to have an heater that was sat on the table the whole time it was that small. Drinks at the cafe in reception are expensive. Definitely won't stay again. I don't recommend this hotel.
Premier Suites Plus Amsterdam

This was a great place to stay after our cruise for a few days.It was super spacious, more so than pictures showed. My husband and I had a loft suite. The king bed was very comfortable. It had everything you needed to make meals if you so chose, with the exception of dish towels- it came with a blue shammy cloth which I guess was meant to dry dishes with? However we used the two dishwasher tabs they provided so it was not a real issue. We were also provided two bottles of water which was nice. We never tried the gym because it was not actually in the hotel but rather outside and around it somewhere else. There was no restaurant but a little place you could purchase water, pop and tiny snacks, etc. The lighting was good. There were no face cloths only hand and shower towels and we were only given one of each. The room was missing a blow dryer and I had to go down and also call down twice to finally get one for my wet hair! Also the bathroom was nice but the shower was built defectively- it was one of those walk in ones where it just has a half wall partition, however this one was built way to short and the bathroom floor got flooded every time someone took a shower! We finally had to get a couple extra hand towels/ shower mats to prop against the half wall floor to stop the floor from getting flooded each time we showered. We mentioned this at the front desk upon check out and they are aware of this so it was not just our room.obviously the contractor that installed the showers messed up big time! The best thing was the location, while not down by all the action it was right on a tram and metro( subway) line and it was a super quick metro ride ( 4 stops) to all the action. The hotel was more reasonably priced than most of the hotels in Amsterdam. It also had a grocery store and many restaurants (Monday to Friday for most but not all of them) right across the street from the hotel. Would definitely stay there again.
