Clean and warm room for January. Simple check in and out. Hot water available for drinks only, no snacks or cup noodles. Breakfast at Haishan Yuan Restaurant is simple Chinese breakfast of rice porridge, fried noodles, mantou bread and vegetables and condiments, food was ok but not sure if suitable for fussy eaters, however generous serving. Offer of drop off to Alishan bus station is a great service, but would have been better if they offer a pickup service to go uphill to the hotel as well.

The B&B is only a 5-minute uphill walk from the bus station, which is great for a solo traveler like me on the go using public transportation. The short climb is worth it when you consider the spectacular views of sunrise and sunset you get at the venue. Checking in is simple and smooth. The host was also kind enough to greet me at the bus. The room I booked is relatively small but the double-size futon bed is firm and has given me 3 nights if comfortable rest. There is no table but the wall-side low counter and stool allows me to have my takeout meal. The bathroom is functional and clean. The only downside is the noise I feel are the noise made by other international travellers (the German and English speakers during my stay 12/27-12/29) who have shown no consideration for other guests, but earplugs allow me to drown it out when I sleep. The buffet-style breakfast is all delicious and plentiful. The owner himself makes fresh coffee from his Nespresso for you. For dinner, I have bought very affordable local takeout noodle stew at a stall near the bus stop, and there is also a convenience store where I could buy food for my next-day mountain hike. The best and key part of the stay has been the photo-taking opportunities at sunrise and sunset, not forgetting the cats in their “cat cafe” outside the restaurant. Overall, for the low price, it is of excellent value.

In fact, it is a gem for many reasons. First, it is conveniently located on the “old street”, where souvenir shopping, train station and restaurants are all within walking distance. Secondly, the rooms are very unique. There are two wings for the hotel. Wing A has all the rooms in the Japanese style, even with the wooden bath tub, Japanese style bedding, tea table etc. The hotel is so environmental conscious that the interior design of the rooms use a lot of wood and bamboo. Though there is water boiler in the room, it is better to go to the front desk to get the boiling spring water to make tea. Thirdly, the hotel has complimentary tour guide services. The tour guide is a local lady who proudly lives in Fengqihu and knows the town in and out. I ventured out to see the forest, bamboo and firefly. In fact she also works as a volunteer at the local tourist information center. She really loves the nature and passionate to share stories while reminding us to appreciate but not destroy the beautiful nature. Fourthly, the hotel offers a lot of freebies such as a bento box as lunch, dinner in the basement and breakfast coupon from Seven Eleven on the 2nd Floor. It also has great Taiwan tea and fast internet. With all these, how don’t I fall in love with this hotel?
