We arrived quite late and booked the most expensive room type, which looked nothing like the photos. The funny thing was that the shower gel in the bathroom was empty, and the tissue box was also empty.
We booked for the Shrewsbury School speech day and leavers ball so the whole town was fully booked. Thankfully there was a suite available at my favourite local hotel. We needed a room for 3 and the hotel staff were super helpful in accommodating our needs. It’s family owned and the culture of care is pervasive. It’s a hotel where the staff like to say yes. Not to mention the character of the hotel itself. It’s a mixture of 12th, 15th and 17th century architecture forming an elaborate maze of rooms covering the block. The Matthews family have truly created a 5 star hotel experience. I was even offered a glass of sherry by the night watchman when I checked in on once at 1am. I cannot recommend this hotel enough.
The room was clean and the breakfast was very good.

GGuest UserRoom services communication needs to be addressed. It was difficult to communicate with Reception as the phone kept ringing. Tv and fridge not working in one of the rooms. Unfortunately, this was not communicated .Staff very friendly, and facility looked perfectly clean.I can go back for another romantic vacation with my wife if I get the chance.
PPeter ClemensA Wonderful Stay at the Lowfield Inn – A Hidden Gem on the English-Welsh Border
We had a fantastic stay at the Lowfield Inn and would highly recommend it to anyone visiting the area. Our family room was spacious, clean, and very comfortable, with plenty of room to relax, including a sofa. The bed was especially comfortable, ensuring a great night’s sleep in a quiet and peaceful setting.
The inn features a lovely common area and a roof terrace with a beautiful view of the surrounding countryside. The scenery is stunning and perfect for enjoying long walks along the border between England and Wales.
The pub itself is a true highlight—offering a great selection of traditional cask ales and a very welcoming beer garden where you can enjoy the evening sun. The atmosphere is warm and friendly, and the staff are genuinely helpful and accommodating. We particularly appreciated the thoughtful touches, such as pencils and paper provided for children.
As for the food: it was excellent and exceeded our expectations. The menu offers a wonderful mix of traditional English pub fare and Indian dishes, all prepared with creativity and care. The starters were delicious, the mains were generous and satisfying, and the desserts were absolutely indulgent. The children’s menu was also well thought out and very appealing. Breakfast was equally impressive, with a wide selection and very generous portions—no one left hungry!
There’s also plenty of parking space, which made everything even easier.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will definitely return the next time we’re in the area.
GGuest UserThe Feathers is well located in the centre of Ludlow and is an old building that is full of charm. However, this also means that it is a bit of a rabbit warren inside, making it challenging to find your way around the long, branching corridors - a definite nightmare in event of a fire.
The carpark was full when we arrived, despite it being much larger than I expected, but there was a council carpark behind the hotel and only a short walk away, which was free from 6pm to 8am, which is very convenient.
Our bed was large, clean and comfortable and the room was well resourced: tea and coffee making facilities with a wide range of teas and milks; complimentary canned water in the mini fridge; iron and ironing board; plenty of sockets including USB, at the bedside and a variety of products in the bathroom, though no toothpaste which was the one thing we'd forgotten to pack! One of the spoons was dirty, hence only 4 stars for cleanliness. The guest wifi was strong and easy to access.
We didn't have time to use the reception areas downstairs, but they looked beautifully presented and were full of character, offering a very attractive space to have a drink or meal.
Staff at reception were pleasant and professional.
GGuest UserDecent location for one night stopover. Staff were friendly and efficient.
Room pretty basic but all okay for what we paid.
Downfall was the noise early morning, being woken to trucks beeping and reversing at 7am on a Sunday isn't my idea of a good night's sleep (which is all we really needed, this was the followed by trolleys clanking and banging, so think this is a real downfall to what should have been a nice little stopover.
I advised the receptionist and she said it was the deliveries....which I understand are needed ....but not 7am on Sunday surely and if so some more thought for those sleeping.
Sadly this affected my overall rating as really you pay to have a good sleep but I didn't get that.

MMeg6366This is a lovely place, we stayed in the ‘cottage’ which was more like an annexe building and it had two rooms of which we occupied one. The room was good, we enjoyed breakfast in the dining room and the breakfast menu had a lot of choice too which was great. There were options for a full English style breakfast, but also options for cereals and fruits etc. We decided to try dinner at the hotel one evening and we were extremely happy with our choice. The food was excellent quality and very enjoyable. The hotel is a short walk into the centre, very close to the castle which is worth a visit and you can see the castle from the road you walk on from the hotel to the city.
GGuest UserI stayed at the hotel to be close to a venue I needed to be the next day.
The hotel was clean and staff were available and friendly.
Free parking is available.
The hotel is very near a co op supermarket and petrol station. There is a pub restaurent next door the Squrriel which uses taste card. If you plan to eat there make a reservation and eat early.
The town is nearby but would be a bit of a walk and I didn't see any bus stops for local transport links. The town of Ludlow is only a few minutes and free parking available after 6 pm behind town square. Again could be a good idea to book a table if you need dinner.
This is a good Travelodge to stay at.
SSheryl AnnLovely building, very good service and in a quiet but convenient location for Wem High St.
Lovely breakfast with plenty of choice.
I had a single room overlooking the beautiful grounds. The room and en-suite were a little tired and could do with a refresh but the bed was comfortable and the room spacious and full of Georgian character.
The duvet weight was too heavy for summer so I slept under a throw with the window open as it was a very warm night. The staff were helpful and attentive. The Old Rectory is good value and I would stay there again.
GGuest UserAwful nights sleep! People talking really loud outside reception early hours of the morning, weren’t told to be quiet at all by staff. Fire alarm went off firstly at 2:38am! No staff to be seen in evacuation point, other guests also wondering what’s going on. Fire door wedged open with fire extinguisher. Alarm went off for a second time; no reassurance from staff. Could smell paint fumes very strongly. Told this morning when complained to reception that the workers were decorating through the night and the fumes and dust set the alarms off.
