Ready to live your best autumn fantasy in Japan? Let’s talk about Gujo Hachiman—a hidden gem in Gifu where the vibes are 💯 cozy, nostalgic, and dreamy AF. Seriously, this is the ultimate spot for a chill autumn escape! If you want quieter streets, dreamy mountain views, and that “lost in a Japanese fairytale” type of atmosphere, Gujo Hachiman is calling your name. Picture strolling down old-school alleys with traditional wooden houses, cute cafes, and crystal-clear waterways reflecting those fire-red maple leaves. And because autumn here is way more relaxed than the busy summer months, you can totally take your time soaking up the chill vibes and fall colors. 🍂 Main Star: Gujo Hachiman Castle (Address: 659 Gujo Hachiman-cho, Gujo-shi, Gifu 501-4214) This place is ICONIC. The castle sits up on a mountain, surrounded by forests that literally explode in red and orange every fall. Climb up and, boom—massive fairytale energy as you look out over the sea of autumn leaves. FYI, opening hours are usually 9:00–17:00 (last entry 16:30), but double-check before you go because sometimes it changes for special events! Hot Spots You Gotta Check Out: · Igawa Lane: Wander along this tiny canal with sweet bridges and old-style houses. Instant zen. · Jionzen-ji Temple: Unique temple vibes + maple leaves = total magic. · Yoshida River Area: Insta-worthy views for days, especially when the trees are peaking. Don’t sleep on the autumn illuminations, happening from November 13–23! ✨ The castle and mountain side get all lit up after dark, turning the whole town into a glowing wonderland. This view is seriously next-level—think My Neighbor Totoro meets your autumn Pinterest board. How to Get Here: Gujo Hachiman is about 1.5-2 hours by train & bus from Nagoya or Gifu City. I share my authentic travel experience in Gifu to everyone, and if there is one corner of Japan that constantly pulls me back into its quiet embrace, it is this mountain-bound wonderland. Nestled deep in the heart of Chubu, Gifu prefecture holds an understated, enchanting tranquility that feels worlds away from the bustling rush of Tokyo or Osaka. Picture walking along the crystal-clear, emerald waters of the Miyagawa or Yoshida River in Gujo Hachiman, where old wooden townhouses reflect off pristine canals and lush green mountain slopes hug the horizon. Or stepping into the fairytale realm of Shirakawa-go, where iconic gassho-zukuri thatched-roof farmhouses rest peacefully beneath towering alpine peaks. There is an almost poetic serenity woven into the daily rhythm here—the gentle sound of rushing river water, the soft scent of burning wood smoke from rural hearths, and the warm, smiling faces of locals welcoming you like an old friend. Every time life gets too loud, Gifu is where I go to reset, breathe in the crisp mountain air, and fall in love with slow travel all over again. What makes Gifu so special is how seamlessly it balances timeless heritage with unforgettable local spots to explore. Beyond the postcard views of Shirakawa-go's Ogimachi village, make sure to carve out time for the preserved merchant streets of Sanmachi Suji in Takayama, or wander the narrow, stone-paved alleys of Gujo Hachiman. One of my favorite local secrets is simply spending a slow afternoon walking along the free, publicly accessible Igawa Lane canals, feeding the vibrant koi carp as fresh spring water trickles past traditional wooden homes. If you are looking for relaxation, head deep into the Okuhida region to immerse yourself in rustic onsen hot spring baths tucked away under leafy forest canopies. For food lovers, a stop in Gifu isn't complete without sitting down at a cozy local eatery to savor melt-in-your-mouth Hida beef grilled on a dried hoba leaf with sweet local miso, or enjoying freshly grilled sweetfish (ayu) straight from the pristine rivers. Traveling through Gifu repeatedly is surprisingly gentle on your budget, making it an absolute dream for slow travelers and repeat visitors alike. To save significantly on transport around the prefecture, grab regional highway bus passes like the Shoryudo Bus Pass, which covers unlimited travel between Nagoya, Takayama, Shirakawa-go, and Kanazawa for a fraction of individual ticket prices. Skip overpriced luxury stays and opt for family-run minshuku (traditional guesthouses) or local inn stays in smaller towns like Gujo or Furukawa; you’ll get cozy futon accommodations and warm hospitality without breaking the bank. Eating like a local is both affordable and delicious—grab regional street food like skewers of Hida beef croquettes or fresh local soba noodles for around 500 to 1,200 yen per meal. Gifu proves that you don't need a lavish budget to experience Japan’s most soul-soothing, authentic hidden gems. #GifuPrefecture #VisitGifu #Takayama #Shirakawago #GujoHachiman #JapanTravel #SlowTravel #HiddenJapan #DiscoverJapan #TravelDiaries #RepeatDestination #BudgetTravelTips #repeatdestination

Japan is famous for temples, sushi, and bullet trains. But the best memories often come from the strange, hands-on, slightly unexpected stuff. Think making your own cup noodles, crossing a swaying vine bridge, or watching snow monkeys soak in a hot spring. Experiences worth planning · Make your own glass wind chime in Tokyo. Blow and paint a traditional furin at Shinohara Furin. It costs about ¥2,850 and needs advance booking. · Design your own Cup Noodles in Yokohama. Choose the flavours and toppings, decorate the cup, and take home a personalised instant-ramen souvenir. · Watch sumo practice in Tokyo. A morning training session at a sumo stable gives you a much closer look at the sport than a tournament. · See the snow monkeys in Nagano. At Jigokudani Monkey Park, wild macaques bathe in hot springs. It is especially lovely in winter. · Snorkel with sea turtles in Miyakojima. Clear Okinawan waters, beginner-friendly tours, and a very good chance of spotting turtles. · Make fake food in Gujo Hachiman. Learn how Japan makes those unbelievably realistic plastic restaurant-food displays, then make your own tempura or ice cream replica. · Cross the Iya Valley vine bridges. A 45-metre traditional vine bridge above a river gorge in Tokushima. Beautiful, slightly terrifying, and very memorable. · Soak in Beppu’s hot springs. Japan’s onsen capital has sand baths, mud baths, and the surreal, colourful “Hells of Beppu.” · Walk on drift ice in Shiretoko. From late January to early March, guided tours let you walk or float among sea ice in Hokkaido. · Stargaze on Ishigaki Island. One of Japan’s darkest certified night skies, with guided telescope tours for around ¥3,500. Easy add-ons · Catch a J-League football match. The season runs from February to November, and tickets are easy to book online. · Visit a maid café in Akihabara. Silly, theatrical, and very Tokyo. Go once for the experience. · Try pachinko. Loud, neon-lit, and very Japanese. Set a small budget and treat it as people-watching with buttons. · Hunt for odd vending machines. From hot meals to regional snacks, Japan’s vending machines are an attraction in themselves. · See Nabana no Sato’s winter lights. A huge flower park near Nagoya that turns into a spectacular LED light festival from autumn to spring. There is a distinct, understated magic in Gifu Prefecture that pulls me back time after time, especially when I return to two of my absolute favorite spots: the idyllic mountain village of Shirakawa-go and the historic riverside town of Gujo Hachiman. Coming back to Shirakawa-go feels like stepping directly into a living fairytale… its iconic gassho-zukuri thatched-roof farmhouses are built in a unique triangular style designed to withstand heavy alpine snowfall, with a rich history dating back hundreds of years when isolated mountain communities lived entirely in harmony with nature. Just down the road, Gujo Hachiman offers a completely different rhythm, built around a majestic 16th-century hilltop castle and an intricate Edo-period water system that still runs crystal-clear through the streets today. Standing on the red bridges, watching koi swim past traditional wooden storehouses, and taking in the steep green hillsides surrounding these heritage villages never fails to completely reset my soul. Every time I revisit Gifu, I discover new local tricks that make the trip so much smoother and more memorable. For Shirakawa-go, my biggest tip is to catch the very first early morning bus to beat the mid-day tourist crowd; having those serene, mist-covered rice fields and mirror-like ponds reflecting the thatched roofs all to yourself is an unforgettable experience. When it comes to eating on a budget, skip the sitting dining rooms and graze like a local instead: grab fresh ayudons (sweetfish) or savory Hida beef skewers from small family-run street stalls for just a few hundred yen, and pair them with a warm, fresh Gohei mochi rice cake. In Gujo Hachiman, you can easily explore the whole historic town entirely on foot, saving your cash for fun local workshops like making hyper-realistic plastic food replicas.. a famous craft born right in the heart of the town. If you’re planning your own journey, my top recommendation is to use regional transportation passes like the Shoryudo Highway Bus Pass from Nagoya or Takayama, which cuts your transit costs to both Shirakawa-go and Gujo significantly compared to buying individual tickets. If you visit in late summer, try to time Gujo Hachiman with the lively Gujo Odori dance festival, or come during autumn when the surrounding forested mountains erupt into brilliant shades of crimson and gold. Also, keep in mind that these traditional villages run mostly on cash, so carry plenty of Japanese Yen for the local guesthouses, neighborhood noodle shops, and handicraft stores. Gifu isn't just a region you cross off a travel bucket list.. it's a destination that warmly welcomes you back like an old friend every single time you return. #GifuPrefecture #Shirakawago #GujoHachiman #JapanTravel #RepeatDestination #ExploreJapan #TravelStory #BudgetTravelJapan #HiddenJapan #repeatdestination

When on a hot spring trip, it's easy to focus solely on relaxing in the baths, which is what we tend to think 👀 B-u-t...! This time, wanting to refresh and connect with nature, I'm introducing some spots I visited around Gero Onsen in Gifu! 【Otaki Limestone Cave】(Photos 2-5) 📍 2298 Akuda, Hachiman-cho, Gujo City, Gifu Prefecture Business Hours: 8:30 AM - 5:00 PM (Last admission) At Otaki Limestone Cave in Gujo City, Gifu Prefecture, you ride a wooden cable car 🚠 up to the cave's entrance. From the cable car, you can enjoy a panoramic view of lush greenery. Inside the cave, it's cool and refreshing, and you can see stalactites and waterfalls up close. During the summer season, they also seem to serve flowing somen noodles (nagashi somen). 【Taki Shrine ⛩️】(Photos 6-8) 📍 2218 Otokari, Mino City, Gifu Prefecture This mysterious shrine nestled in the forest is absolutely Instagram-worthy. The moss growing on the hundreds of stone steps and the guardian statues gave the place a wonderful, historic feel. 【Tsukechi Gorge Fudo Waterfall】(Photos 9-11) 📍 6-39 Tsukechi-cho, Nakatsugawa City, Gifu Prefecture Selected as one of Gifu Prefecture's 50 Best Waters and one of Japan's 100 Best Forests for Forest Bathing, Fudo Waterfall reveals its crystal-clear water as you walk along the forest path! I felt like all my negative thoughts were washed away along with the falling water. You can soak in the negative ions while forest bathing, and the sounds of the earth and water provide natural healing ♪ In autumn, the leaves turn a vivid vermilion, creating a wonderful contrast 🍁 【Ryujin Waterfall】(Photos 12-15) 📍 1057-4 Kawaue, Nakatsugawa City, Gifu Prefecture It is located about a 30-minute drive from Fudo Waterfall. While Fudo Waterfall was amazing, Ryujin Waterfall features a more striking emerald green color, and it's said that the water changes color up to seven times a day, showing shades like cobalt blue and emerald blue. There's also a boardwalk nearby, making it the perfect photo spot! If you ever have the chance to visit Gifu Prefecture, be sure to go and experience the lush, green nature 🌳
ニック.6There are many snow trails but the management is not good. On weekends when there are more people, many skateboarders just park in the middle of the snow trail to rest without being driven away, which is dangerous.
alankmsumI went there during the Chinese New Year this year and visited Dynaland and Hirugao ski resorts. Hirugao is suitable for beginners and is suitable for skiing. The slope is a bit steep for beginners and it is easy to fall. The service here is good, there are many food options, and the one-stop service for renting ski equipment is very convenient. There are shuttle buses to nearby major hotels and other ski resorts. There is a night show here.
呼呼猫妈The snow quality was good, the slope was wide and easy to slide on, but the changing room was small and smelly in the evening.
YUUTA1003Here, you can take a lift to the starting point for sledding, so the sledding distance is very long and the sledding experience is very satisfying.
Alleex00I had the opportunity to walk around the town around the castle. The atmosphere was great. I took beautiful pictures and the air was cool. There were many restaurants to choose from to eat. There were many souvenir shops. One of them was a shop selling miniatures made from candles. It looked real. #TravelJapan
