Hakone Hotel Kowakien, a natural onsen hotel offering dinner and breakfast that I'd rate 90 out of 100. It's not easy to impress me in Hakone, the famed hot spring town in Kanagawa Prefecture, but this hotel truly excelled across all criteria, showing a consistently high standard. Both the front desk and restaurant staff were attractive, with fluent English and standard accents; notably, they didn't employ any Southeast Asian staff. The hotel facilities are relatively new and well-designed, and the cleanliness is exceptional. The public areas offer plenty of sofa seating, and the temperature control is precise, allowing guests to comfortably wander around in traditional yukata without feeling cold. The air is fresh with no strong artificial scents, embodying a 'Natural and Pure' concept. The restaurant, named Fontainebleau, lives up to its name with authentic French pastries. The 'all-you-can-eat' style still maintains high-quality ingredients, and there's an unlimited supply of Sapporo Asahi draft beer and Gekkeikan sake. What's more, the self-service alcohol bar is also open during breakfast, which seems quite common for Japanese guests – their physical resilience certainly differs from ours! Observing Japanese dining concepts, you'll notice several characteristics: a wide variety of dishes, comprehensive nutrition, low-temperature preservation, minimal oil and seasoning, and avoiding high-temperature cooking to prevent nutrient loss. The sauna is also quite professional, featuring a 12-minute sand timer, anti-scald mats, humidity and temperature displays, and powerful heating elements that ensure you won't waste any time. Whether you prefer mountain views, garden vistas, or indoor hot springs, there's an option for everyone. For those interested, the address is: 1297 Ninotaira, Hakone-machi, Kanagawa Prefecture 250-0407

I loved this hotel! It is very far from most tourist attractions, but it is very close to the metro. The reception staff are very kind and professional, and they speak excellent English. My favourite part of my stay was the delicious breakfast, which wasn’t included in my reservation but I could pay the fee at the restaurant no problem. I would definitely stay here again! rt

The room was quite spacious; we had no problem opening two 28-inch suitcases. The bathroom had a separate wet and dry area. The hotel is right above a subway station, just two stops from Yokohama Station, and a taxi ride costs about 1000-ish JPY. Right next to the hotel, the Mark Is shopping mall has a good selection of outdoor brands like Arc'teryx, Descente, Salomon, Oakley, Montbell, etc., plus a supermarket where you can grab lots of tasty snacks. It's also a short walk to the Red Brick Warehouse. Overall, it's great value for money if you're staying in Yokohama.

The environment is OK. It's not far from Atsugi Station. I didn't pay attention and booked a smoking room. The smell of cigarettes was too strong. I used an air purifier but it didn't disperse it. My face was swollen due to allergies the next day. I will pay more attention next time.

Right by the pirate ship dock, the views are great, though there are quite a few stairs to navigate. However, the hotel facilities are excellent, especially the lounge. It has plenty of seating, hot and cold drinks, board games, and nice views. The hotel lawn even has tripods set up, which is a thoughtful touch. The only downside is that there aren't any recommended restaurants in the immediate vicinity.

First off, the room was incredibly clean! Housekeeping did a thorough job every day. The front desk staff were warm and patient, and the facilities were very new and well-maintained. Secondly, the hotel's location is excellent! It's just a few minutes' walk from Yamashita Park and Chinatown, and the Hikawa Maru is also nearby. Yokohama Station and the Red Brick Warehouse are also very close. Shopping nearby is super convenient! There's a 7-Eleven and a Lawson right downstairs. If you walk towards Chinatown a bit, there's a supermarket. It's also close to Yokohama Station's commercial center, making shopping very easy.

A nice hostel, very recommended if you are a budget traveller. They also have a private onsen. I like the place. Just bring and put a mosquito repellant when you stay outside of the hostel, it is given because Hakone is located in a mountain area with lots of trees.

This hotel boasts a prime location, just over 100 meters from Motomachi-Chukagai Station (Minatomirai Line). Yamashita Park is conveniently situated right downstairs, offering lovely views of Yokohama Port. While the immediate surroundings are a bit light on dining options, as I didn't venture into Chinatown, you'll find mostly Western eateries (like McDonald's) nearby. The area itself is wonderfully quiet. The front desk is located on the 12th floor. As for the service, you'll have to form your own opinion. If you don't speak Japanese, don't expect particularly deep interactions; communication felt somewhat superficial, and there wasn't much genuine connection. On the positive side, the room was excellent – spacious and featuring a very comfortable bed. Hotel staff were generally polite and offered greetings, which is typical good practice in Japan. It's truly quiet, making it ideal for a relaxing shower and a peaceful night's sleep. Shopping in Yokohama is also easily accessible from here. Both the 12th floor and the rooftop offer drinking options. These could be pleasant spots to chat with a few friends, but be aware that the prices are quite steep.

AAnonymous UserThe hotel has a lovely little garden that's beautiful both day and night. The dinner buffet was excellent, with a wide variety of dishes, including seafood, crawfish, and king crab – much better than breakfast. On the first floor, there's free ice cream; just ask the front desk for tokens. There's a good selection, and it's delicious. The chocolate cones were especially crispy.

MM28594****Whenever I visit Yokohama, I always stay here. The rooms are clean and tidy, and I'm very satisfied with their size and layout. When I have a lot of luggage, the staff even help me carry it to my room. Transportation is super convenient from here, and there's also a parking lot downstairs. As long as they keep up this standard, I'll continue choosing this hotel.

GGuest UserOverall an ok stay. A bit hard to find, very limited English spoken by the staff which led to some confusion (even for the representatives who were assigned to us by English speakers). Felt quite formal and not that warm Room was more or less as expected, and the dinner and breakfast meals were quite elaborate. Felt that breakfast was actually the stronger meal of the two, so wasn’t necessarily worth it to pay extra for dinner. I’d likely skip doing dinner in the future. The room attendant who helped us was very kind and attentive, although we had a bit of language barrier given we don’t speak Japanese. The big disappointment was even though the ryokan is advertised as allowing guests to book one of the larger hot springs on the property for private use for 45 minutes, we weren’t able to do this. We arrived within the designated check in time and were told that it was all booked up for the day. There was no way to book in advance and we were only staying for one night, and they didn’t try to accommodate allowing us to book at all for the next day before checkout. This really hampered the experience overall - we weren’t that interested in using the gender segregated facility (was traveling with my partner who is the opposite gender) as we wouldn’t be able to spend time together, and the tub in our room was quite small. They should amend this policy to allow all guests to book a private hot spring time or not advertise it as part of the room! Feels like we got cheated out of the service and we weren’t offered anything else as an alternative. I would have booked another ryokan had I known this were the case - there are many others in Hakone which are much better value and have nicer / newer private facilities for around the same price. I wouldn’t recommend Yama no Chaya given this was a big part of what we thought would make it a good experience

AAnonymous UserA very beautiful ryokan, old but very well maintained. The decor is so beautiful. From the moment you check in, you will be in good hands of the ryokan, well served with friendliness. Keiseki meals (dinner and breakfast) are served in the room. Food is delicious! And love the private outdoor onsen!! U get to book for 30 minutes per day for the stay. Well worth the price.

KKunmingzi🏔️✨【Hakone Indigo Hotel: A Dreamlike Mountain Retreat】 This was my first stay at Hakone Gōra Indigo, and I was truly rejuvenated by the ambiance. The hotel is nestled in a hot spring resort surrounded by mountains; opening the window reveals layers of greenery and distant clouds and mist, as beautiful as a painting. The room design is modern yet elegantly Japanese, and the open-air onsen was fantastic. The spring water was smooth and comforting, instantly washing away a day's fatigue. Breakfast was also incredibly impressive, using fresh local ingredients; you could feel the attention to detail even in the bread and juice. The staff were friendly and attentive, with every greeting feeling warm, making you feel right at home. The overall experience exceeded expectations, and it's worth revisiting, whether you're a couple, a family, or a solo traveler. 💛 The only thing worth mentioning is that the in-room onsen water seemed to be completely diluted; you could even call it a 'fake' onsen. It lacked the typical onsen smell and was essentially just hot water.

MM307358****1. This hotel feels like a resort. While strolling through the outdoor gardens, I discovered it was built in 1911 by the Mitsubishi Group. No wonder it has that distinctive 'era' feel of Japan's economic development. The front desk service was incredibly warm and helpful. I wasn't sure if the bottled water and coffee/tea bags in the room would be extra charges, but they patiently and thoroughly answered all my questions over the phone. There's a gift shop right next to the reception area with reasonably priced souvenirs and a great selection – I ended up buying a lot! However, due to its age, some of the equipment is a bit finicky (like the bathroom exhaust fan), but it didn't significantly impact our stay. 2. The onsen (hot spring) was decent, and the washing facilities were very convenient. Since it was my first time, I carefully read the instructions before going, but there were still some things I didn't quite grasp, and I ended up needing help from others in the changing room. I suggest the hotel add to their onsen etiquette comic: 'Please bring your own towel from your hotel room to the onsen changing room, and take it back to your room after use.' (The latter point about taking towels back is mentioned on a separate paper in the wardrobe, but the information is a bit scattered across different notes). 3. Breakfast was also very good, and we were lucky enough to see Mount Fuji! Lucky day! Overall, I highly recommend it! My mom and I had a wonderful stay. It would definitely be even more beautiful during autumn leaves or cherry blossom season, but probably more expensive too, haha~

MMeow sensai**Positives:** ✅ **Modern & Clean:** Well-maintained, spacious rooms with comfortable onsen. ✅ **Good Location:** Convenient access to surrounding areas. **Areas for Improvement:** ⚠️ **Room Location:** - Room extremely far from dining/foot bath – exhausting daily walks (especially with foot concerns). - *Suggestion:* Offer closer room options or service for guests with mobility needs. ⚠️ **Dining Experience (Dinner & Breakfast):** - **Food Quality:** Lamb not fresh; overall quality below ”1 stay 2 meals” onsen standard. No beef , only lamb meat is not fresh. Not satisfied with the food quality. We wanna have cup noodles after meal. Breakfast is slight better. - **Variety:** Insufficient choices (both Western & Japanese); lacked local/seasonal specialties expected at onsen hotels. Pretty disappointed. We been to many onsen hotel in Japan. Never encountered this. - **Service/Clarity:** Buffet poorly organized; unclear signage led to confusion over food availability. - **Expectations:** Meals didn’t showcase regional ingredients or highlight local cuisine like other onsen resorts. Hakone is famous onsen should showcase their seasonal ingredients in this region. **Summary:** Strong potential with modern facilities, but **critical improvements needed in dining quality** and **room accessibility** to meet onsen hotel standards.
