Great Value and Location, But Facilities Could be Better
Stay Dates: November 14 - November 17, 2025
Room Type: Double Room High Floor
My recent three-night stay at the Tune Hotel Georgetown Penang was a positive experience overall, primarily due to its unbeatable location and excellent value.
The Location (5/5) truly is the highlight of this hotel. Being situated in Georgetown made exploring the city's main attractions, heritage sites, and famous hawker food spots incredibly convenient. If proximity to the heart of Penang is your priority, this hotel delivers perfectly. The Ondo Bakery across the street was my absolute favorite to visit daily!
The Cleanliness (4/5) and Service (4/5) were both solid and up to standard. The room was kept clean, and the staff were helpful and friendly during check-in and throughout my stay, providing good, reliable service.
The area where the hotel falls a little short is the Facilities (3/5 - Okay). While the room provided the basics needed for a comfortable stay—a comfortable bed and a reliable air conditioning unit—the overall facilities felt quite basic. This is typical of a budget-focused hotel, but those expecting extensive amenities might be disappointed. For a short stay where you plan to be out exploring all day, however, the facilities are perfectly adequate.
In summary, the Tune Hotel Georgetown Penang is an excellent choice for budget-conscious travelers who prioritize location above all else. It offers a clean room and good service in a fantastic spot. If the hotel were to upgrade some of its amenities, it would easily earn a five-star rating from me.
The hotel location is good; close to the famous temple Kek Lok Si and Penang Hill as well as many coffee shop, food market and small restaurants.. but the hotel looks worn out and only the very basic are provided. The hotel does not provide breakfast.
Lobby area has an unpleasant smell (coming from the drainage just outside the hotel main entrance. Hope they could do something about it as it’s not appealing at all for the hotel.
We stayed for 2 nights but no housekeeping was done. No hand towels, only 2 bath towels that looks very old though still clean.
Staff at the reception counter were quite helpful.
On the whole, for the price it’s still worthwhile.
My flight was later in the evening but late check out timing will be 12 pm the latest. In this case I will be out without room for quite a number of hours. To my surprise, the hotel does cater a room for guests to rest and sit in after check out. This room is provide for guests who has check out but flight is much later, to have a place to rest and relax before proceeding to the airport. This is a very thoughtful action. Thanks.
This is my third stay at this hotel, having visited previously when it was Evergreen Laurel and now as Gurney Bay Hotel. I have always appreciated the atmosphere—it has a classic, old-school charm that still manages to attract a younger crowd. Another highlight is the breakfast, which is consistently excellent and never disappoints.
However, as a 5-star hotel, I believe the property should maintain a level of service and maintenance that matches its rating. Unfortunately, this stay had some significant issues. On our first night, we suffered from heavy bed bug bites. While the hotel moved us to a new room, we suspected the bed bug issue persisted there as well, though to a lesser degree. Furthermore, the second room had a water leak under the bathroom basin and the water wouldn't drain properly.
I believe the hotel is still well-managed overall, but there needs to be more attention to detail. Maintenance should be proactive—inspecting rooms thoroughly and frequently—rather than waiting for a customer to complain before taking action. I truly like this hotel, so I hope management takes this feedback seriously to ensure the 5-star standard is upheld.
Staffs were friendly and helpful. Able to get corner room with good Komtar tower and sea view. Check-in/out process was done fast and smoothly, no deposit collected. Room very spacious, comfortable king bed and 4 big pillow provided. Location is in main road to many attractions and local restaurants and free city bus stop no. 7 just in front of the hotel. Breakfast was splendid with very good variety of local, Chinese and Japanese meals. Really recommended!
The hotel is great, staff are impeccable in their attentiveness to the guest. Room was spacious, clean and comfortable. Breakfast buffet was absolutely outstanding, with an abundance of choices catered to satisfy every taste. The pool and gym are also fantastic, with the added convenience of being open 24/7, to put in an early morning workout. Spacious and very well equipped and maintained.
However, our stay was not without faults and there are definitely some things management needs to address:
- the noise from the elevator automatic announcements is absurd! the ”doors opening/closing” alerts are constant and audible from neighboring floors as well as your own.If you stay in a room numbered xx15 or xx16, be advised you will not have a pleasant time - we asked to change rooms immediately as soon as we realized this.
- elevators can be SLOW, magma slow. it can take a long time to move around if you are staying in a higher floor. We stayed for 2 nights and during that period 2 separate elevators were down for maintenance. It took us a total of 15 minutes to move from one floor to the other, after getting our room changed (for reasons stated above) and new keycards.
- the level from street noise audible in the room is just inadmissible at a supposed 5-star hotel level, at least in the rooms facing the main road. These rooms have, inexplicably, a single pane of glass and very tall windows, which makes soundproofing pretty much nonexistent - mat rempit bikes racing in the dead of night, the call to prayer blasting from the loudspeakers of the mosque nearby before 6am, drilling from the construction site nearby, and other nuisances that definitely disturbed my sleep.
Everything is good, except there is no bidet in the toilet.
Location wise is very good. Malls were just next door. Walking distance to Cecil street marlet for breakfast and Kimberly night market for dinner.
Next to komtar Top and there is a nearby michelin nonya restaurant as well.
Room is well maintained n clean.
Had a cake at the Hotel cafe but doesnt really taste nice, can skip though 😅
Otherwise, everything is good.
I had an excellent stay at this hotel. The rooms were spacious, clean, and comfortable, providing a perfect environment to relax. The staff were incredibly friendly and attentive, always ready to assist with any request. The facilities, including the pool and gym, were well-maintained and added to the overall experience. I also enjoyed the delicious breakfast, which offered a variety of fresh options. The location was convenient, making it easy to explore nearby attractions. Overall, this hotel exceeded my expectations, and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a pleasant and memorable stay.
Gotten assigned a corner room which seems to be larger as compared to other rooms in the middle. The room is very spacious and comfortable. Amenities are plentiful and the best thing is the complimentary drinks and snacks in the room.
The gym equipment are quite comprehensive and they have saunas as well.
They provide buggy service to the other side (another hotel under the same name) and shopping mall (limited to Gurney Plaza only).
One thing to mention, the LED lighting looked nice on the exterior of the hotel, but in contrast it is a bit annoying when staying in the room. Forced to shut the curtain to block out the lights.
Strongly recommend Sunway Georgetown. Tho 31 yr old, extremely well maintained, at least for my room. Location 5*. Just outside hotel bustling with activities n street food stalls in evening. Walking distance to Macalister Road, again bustling with plenty food choices/shops. I can’t find even 1 negative aspect of hotel! Staff very friendly n helpful. The shower water pressure was very strong, can aqua massage. The young male housekeeper always smiling. Also strongly recommend must visit, Kirishima Japanese resto in the lobby of Cittitel Hotel. For hotel setting, n qualify of food, esp sashimi air flown from Japan, can’t get this price n qualify in Singapore! So good that we went twice. Even their Otoro n chuotoro, charged by per piece or set of 5 thick cuts, not think slices, was value for $! Look for the manageress Jane Tan, a gem n star of the resto! Another must visit for morning snacks n kopi, Moh Teng Peow Nonya kueh. Very authentic n traditional setting. Kuehs are handmade in-house! Wonderful experience! The only negative is Penang island itself! Quite dead town, not much changes in tourist attractions from 30 yr ago. Penang hill, khek lok si temple, chawrasta morning market, Armenian street, Cornwall fort. Used to be popular komtar mall, even newer parangin mall are deserted with most shops shuttered! There are many old charm colonial buildings. Most McDonald’s are housed in such colonial buildings. Penangites are generally very friendly. We happen to be here during durian season. Macalister Road n even outside hotel are lined with durian stalls. Relatively much cheaper than in Singapore n I m talking about the AAA grade mao san wang cultivar. Fooding n bingeing is apt for Penang, not touristy spots tho, esp if u have been here before, even long ago. Attached pictures show day n nite views from same angle in the room.

GGuest UserExcellent trip with great family companions. Hotel is clean, staff are friendly and welcoming. Will repeat my visit with my family in future.
SSiferaThe hotel is more than 40 years old and the rumour is tjt a new management has taken over and a major renovation is about to happen in 2026. The only thing we really enjoyed was the view from the rooms overlooking the sea and the Penang bridge. We were here becuase we attended a wedding and wanted the convenience but the Banquet team did not provide us with the best service for the event area and we have sent a separate email to address that.

EEnterprise NX01The hotel location isn’t that great but it’s still within the city area. Front desk service is good. We book just for a night to try out and see if we can book again the next round but the experience wasn’t that good and will give this hotel a missed next time.
We’re given a no window in the middle of the hotel room with not much space and not much amenities and no slippers for within the room use. We won’t know if there’s a fire broke out when the alarm or the water sprinkler malfunction.
The rack in the toilet was directly above the toilet seat even when there’s ample space to place in the toilet as it was spacious inside. Too little hanger and place to hang for a family room.
SsnowcatThe E&O Hotel was definitely the highlight of my trip to Malaysia! Highly recommended! This 140-year-old heritage hotel is one of the world's three grand old hotels. Its architecture boasts strong British colonial characteristics, and the interiors are incredibly luxurious, adorned with numerous antique furnishings and artworks. Many world-renowned figures have stayed here. Every corner offers a picturesque photo opportunity, no filters needed! I recommend staying in the Legacy Wing to enjoy more exclusive hotel perks, such as the benefits listed in the last picture that we enjoyed during our three-day stay (the hotel even complimentary a bottle of nice red wine!).
Exploring the hotel itself each day was a delight, saving us from having to venture out in the scorching sun to find attractions. Three days wasn't nearly enough. The staff were all wonderful, and the hotel guests included many elderly Caucasian tourists from Europe and America, as well as many Chinese travelers like us, visiting during Golden Week. The staff were always smiling and treated everyone equally, regardless of their nationality. The breakfast selection was extensive; we tried breakfast at three different restaurants, each with its own unique charm, accompanied by beautiful scenery and antique furniture – very satisfying! 👍 The hotel has two pools: one on the ground floor by the sea, and another infinity pool on the 6th floor. Both are stunning. There were often many Chinese women taking photos by the pool, but not actually swimming, which left me plenty of space. I even learned how to breaststroke in just three days, haha!
The hotel is located in George Town, surrounded by the old colonial buildings of the old quarter, which are definitely worth seeing. Nearby attractions include the Pinang Peranakan Mansion (also known as the Nyonya Museum) and the Clan Jetties. If you're going to Penang, you absolutely must stay at this hotel!
RRacLimAngsana is always our preferred choice whenever we are back to Penang! It never disappoints us and this time we get to watch the fire show and a surprise fireworks! The view is spectacular and the staff is friendly! The room is clean and the breakfast is delicious too!

MMiaoMeowI found the hotel to be overall excellent and beautiful. The front desk and bellhop staff were quite enthusiastic, while others were just okay. The hotel facilities were also ample; for instance, since we arrived in the afternoon, the hotel allowed us to check in early. This meant I could easily take a nap on a sun lounger by the pool and even follow the sun to explore different parts of the hotel. The weather was great, and the ambiance was lovely. The hotel's location is fantastic, about a five-minute walk to the delicious Natsu. It was a shame that Bora Bora, right next to Natsu, was closed on Wednesday, so I missed out on the fire show, but the food was superb. The location is also a big plus for solo travelers wanting to go to the beach at night; I enjoyed a safe and peaceful time by myself. There were many breakfast options, but I felt the taste was pretty standard, nothing to write home about. My only minor complaint is that the shower head kept falling down and couldn't stay in place.
MMicyeeThe hotel is located about 10–15 minutes away from the town. The surrounding area is rather quiet, with no eateries nearby, but there’s a cozy café at the lobby. Check-in was smooth and efficient, each guest even received a drink voucher, which can be redeemed for coffee, tea, or orange juice. The room itself is very spacious and comfortable. However, there are a few areas that could be improved. The shower area doesn’t have a door, so water tends to splash outside. The bathroom drainage is slightly clogged, and the bathroom door cannot be fully closed, which may feel a bit awkward if staying with friends. Lastly, the bed sheet had an unpleasant smell, which was quite disappointing. Overall, the stay was consider ok in terms of space and service, but cleanliness and bathroom maintenance could be better.
