Private island retreat meets English country escape on the river Thames in Bray- Berkshire. Follow in the footsteps of monks and monarchs- writers and composers at Monkey Island Estate. From humble beginnings as a medieval monastery- this private island on the river Thames became an aristocratic retreat - reinvented today as a boutique hotel. The rooms- suites and guest cottages evoke the individual style of the eighteenth century villa- while remaining comfortable and contemporary. This theme continues within the main buildings- where a Grade 1-listed room featuring quirky frescoes from the 1730s has been transformed into a snug lounge and whisky bar. Monkey Island Estate is a Small Luxury Hotels of the World property. A discretionary Service Charge of 5% of room rate will be applied to all reservations.
"Upscale hotel with great service in the middle of a stunning little island."
GGuest UserFrom the moment we arrived at Danesfield House, we were treated extremely well. All of the staff were very helpful and could not do enough for us, even carrying our luggage to our room.
Our room had a beautiful view over the river Thames and hotel gardens and the four poster bed was lovely and comfortable. The bathroom was lovely and clean and their were plenty of towels and toiletries.
I had booked a treatment in the Spa for my wife and all of the staff were amazing. The Spa itself was very nice, and although the jacuzzi was out of action, this did not spoil the experience at all.
Finally, our breakfast was wonderful. We were greeted and shown to our seats immediately. Our order was taken for our choice of breakfast by a lovely waitress and coffee and toast was brought to us by an absolutely wonderful waiter who had the biggest smile that never left his face the entire time we were in the restaurant. He was extremely polite and just made you smile with his infectious enthusiasm for the ”fabulous filter coffee” and the ”terrific toast” (his words, not mine) that he served us. I just wish I had his name to include with this review as he deserves a special mention.
Overall it was a fantastic experience and the right choice of hotel to celebrate my wife's birthday. We will definitely be coming back.
GGuest UserThis hotel looks beautiful from outside with a lovely ground and impressive entrance, but however, I found the room & common area not so impressive they need to give it a face lift to deserve the room rate. Especially with a high bathtub it’s quite dangerous as it’s slippery when you step into it to have a shower, even with the rubber mat on it , luckily I brought along my rubber slipper, which I can use to have a shower to prevent from slipping . Our room included breakfast, buffet table selection of food were poor, and the quality of food was not great even with basic smoke salmon it looks stale & the cooked breakfast was ok not impressive. The front desk reception staff were not helpful with problem . But the manager at the front desk was very helpful when we checked out , after hearing our comments about the problem he took note said he’ll look into the problem & told us to contact him when decide to stay with them next time. I do appreciate his helpfulness & trying to make the best of the situation, Cliveden Hotel should treasure him as the hotel manager.
GGuest UserHouse keeping every day, swimming pool + gym + sauna free to use, nice staff, free spacious parking, extra pillows, spacious room, lift access.
The only bad thing is the bath tub a bit small, and the shower curtain smells bad after use.
NNanalalalala~~~OMG the place was just amazing! We definitely will come back again! Although the hotel was located quite far from city Center, i.e., an hour from Oxford University, half an hour from Bicester, but 15 mins drive from Waitrose, which was good enough for us (chill but enjoy the world class racing cars around). The facilities were new. The staff was friendly ( strongly felt it in the breakfast session), there was own car park just next to the apartment too. Free 15 mins electricity charging outside the reception. Free access to gym and swimming pool… everything just fabulous!

Very Good
CCaz64An excellent hotel. Front desk staff are very helpful. The spa is very clean. The breakfast is delicious and has a very wide choice. The beds are super comfy!
GGuest UserOverall nice hotel. The thing that I liked a lot straight away is that aroma - i think they use some really nice professional aromas there.
The room was clean and spacious 10/10 for the room.
Great reception staff. People are really nice there.
The let down for us was non-working jacuzzi and freezing pool..(they had a boiler.broken unfortunately).
Steamroll was amazingly hot however.
Overall good stay.
Bear in mind if you are not driving, you would be a bit stuck with getting any extra bits you might need for the evening.
GGuest UserVery lovely welcome and flexible allowing slightly earlier book in to enable us to get ready for a wedding. Room clean and breakfast was great.
GGeorge Z PatonStayed in a room which barely had a window. It was in the eaves. It was well lit but gave me claustrophobia due to the lack of window. Room did not appear to be the one we booked. The photos looked different. Breakfast ok but no self service
