How to get to Jiuzhaigou: 2026 Guide

Author's Profile Picture
How to Get to Jiuzhaigou

Before August 2024, reaching Jiuzhaigou was a real adventure. Travellers had to take an 8-hour bus journey from Chengdu, following mountain roads through steep gorges, with occasional closures caused by landslides.

The good news is that a new high-speed rail connection has made travelling to Jiuzhaigou much easier. The turquoise lakes of northern Sichuan, once only accessible to travellers with plenty of time, can now be visited during a long weekend trip.

You will still need to choose the right train, arrange the onward shuttle bus, and book your entry time in advance, as Jiuzhaigou National Park no longer accepts visitors without a reservation.

No need to worry — this guide explains everything you need to know about getting to Jiuzhaigou, including transport options, tickets and practical travel tips.

📍 Where is Jiuzhaigou and how do you get there?

Located in northern Sichuan Province, in the Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture near the border with Gansu, Jiuzhaigou Valley is famous for its turquoise lakes, waterfalls and Tibetan villages. Its name comes from the nine Tibetan villages that were originally located in the valley, some of which are still inhabited today.

Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992, the park has a distinctive Y-shaped layout:

  • Right branch – Rize Valley: The most photographed area, known for colourful lakes and waterfalls.
  • Left branch – Zezhawa Valley: The highest section, leading towards Long Lake.
  • Main trunk – Shuzheng Valley: The central route descending towards the park entrance.
👉 Good to know: There is no accommodation inside Jiuzhaigou National Park. Most hotels are located in Zhangzha Town, just outside the park entrance.

🚄 High-speed train to Jiuzhaigou: the latest and easiest option

High-speed rail: the real game-changer for getting to Jiuzhaigou

Since 30 August 2024, the Zhenjiangguan–Huangshengguan section of the Chengdu–Xining high-speed railway has been open, making travel to Jiuzhaigou much easier. Three new high-altitude stations were added, including Huanglong-Jiuzhai Station, located at 2,977 metres above sea level in Chuanzhusi Town.

Previously, the journey from Chengdu by road could take 7–8 hours. With the new high-speed rail connection, the trip can now be completed in around 3.5 hours, making Jiuzhaigou a much more accessible destination.

Key High-Speed Train Information

  • Journey time: The fastest train from Chengdu East to Huanglong-Jiuzhai takes around 1 hour 39 minutes, while other services usually take 2–2.5 hours.
  • Frequency: Up to around 30 services per day during peak travel periods.
  • Ticket price: Around CNY 141 (≈ £15) for second class and CNY 225 (≈ £24) for first class.
  • Booking: Tickets are released 15 days before departure. You can book through the 12306 app, which supports passport registration for international travellers.

⚠️ Important: Some trains show Huangshengguan or Songpan as their final destination. This does not necessarily mean they skip Jiuzhaigou access — always check the stations served and make sure the train stops at Huanglong-Jiuzhai Station.

The station was originally designed for around 800 passengers, but passenger numbers have increased significantly. Expansion work started in late 2025 to enlarge the waiting area to around 2,600 square metres. Temporary routes may be in place while construction continues.

💡 Trip.com tip Take an early train departing Chengdu East between 6:30 and 7:00. You can arrive around 9:00, take the shuttle bus and reach Zhangzha in time for lunch. A departure around 10:00 usually means arriving in the afternoon, leaving little time for sightseeing.

From Huanglong-Jiuzhai Station to Jiuzhaigou Valley

⚠️ Please note: Huanglong-Jiuzhai Station is not directly next to Jiuzhaigou National Park. You still need to travel around 93 km by mountain road, which takes approximately 2 hours.

Shuttle Bus Information

  • Service hours: Around 06:00–23:00, with departures timed around train arrivals.
  • Route: Connects the station with several stops in Zhangzha Town, usually near major hotels.
  • Fare: Around CNY 28–56 (≈ £3–6) depending on the drop-off point.
  • Tickets:
    • Online: Through the dedicated WeChat mini-program, available 5 days before travel.
    • On site: At the visitor centre outside the station.
📌 Trip.com tip Save your hotel name in Chinese characters before boarding. Shuttle buses only stop at fixed locations, so choosing the correct stop can help you avoid an extra taxi journey at the end.

✈️ Flying to Jiuzhaigou: the fastest but less predictable choice

Jiuzhai Huanglong Airport is also located in Chuanzhusi, around 88 km from Jiuzhaigou Valley National Park, with a journey time of approximately 1.5 hours by road. Sitting at an altitude of 3,447.65 metres, it is one of the highest civilian airports in China.

Key points to consider before booking:

  • Limited flight options: Since the 2017 earthquake, several routes have not resumed. In 2026, direct flights mainly operate from Chengdu and Chongqing. Check the latest schedules before booking, as some online guides still mention routes from Beijing, Shanghai or Xi’an that may no longer be available.
  • Weather-related delays: Due to its high altitude, snow, fog and low visibility can frequently cause delays or cancellations, especially during winter. Allow extra time for your return journey.
  • Getting to Jiuzhaigou after arrival:

⚠️ Altitude reminder: The flight takes you from Chengdu at around 500 metres above sea level to nearly 3,450 metres in just 55 minutes. Travellers who are sensitive to altitude changes should take this sudden elevation gain into account.

💡 Trip.com tip For most travellers, the smoother option is to fly to Chengdu first, spend some time exploring the city, then continue to Jiuzhaigou by high-speed train or bus. This also allows more time for gradual altitude adjustment.

Suitable for travellers planning stops along the way

The journey follows a spectacular mountain road through areas such as Wenchuan, Maoxian and Songpan, offering impressive scenery along the route. However, it can be physically demanding, with possible delays caused by road conditions or landslides during the rainy season.

With a similar budget, the high-speed train is now usually the better choice, as it takes around half the time and offers a more comfortable journey.

💡 Tip: The bus can still be a good option if you want to explore destinations along the way rather than travel directly to Jiuzhaigou.

🚗 Private transfers and organised tours to Jiuzhaigou

For a group or family, a private transfer can be a good option, especially for combining Jiuzhaigou and Huanglong, which are about 105 kilometres apart by road.

Many travellers combine the train to Huanglong-Jiuzhai with a private car and driver once there: you keep the flexibility without having to endure the eight-hour drive from Chengdu. Pretty handy!

It’s also the best way to reach secondary sites, like the Mounigou valley for example, which aren't well served by public transport.

Organised tours from Chengdu, lasting two or three days, generally include the train, transfers, and accommodation. Most importantly, they save you the headache of booking entry tickets, which we'll come back to below.

I took my mother to Jiuzhaigou, and she was very satisfied with the hotel. The service was good, and the breakfast had a decent variety. Perhaps because it was off-peak season, there weren't many people. It was very convenient to just grab a taxi right outside the hotel after breakfast, and it took about 15 minutes to reach the entrance of Jiuzhaigou. When we checked out, we were heading to the bus station, and the hotel staff were very thoughtful and helped us carry our luggage across to the supermarket opposite the hotel. The hotel shares an outdoor garden with the Conrad, which was very quiet. However, it would be even better if the restaurant offered more non-spicy dinner options. My mother doesn't eat spicy food, and it was quite difficult for her to choose.

Ken Li Kun, the branch manager, was incredibly attentive and patient throughout my stay. They never shied away from an issue, proactively communicated at the first sign of trouble, and efficiently resolved everything. Their demeanor was warm and polite, and their professionalism truly stood out. This meticulous and thoughtful service significantly enhanced my overall experience. I highly commend this manager's professional ethics, and it's thanks to excellent staff like them that the hotel's reputation shines so brightly. Special recognition is definitely due.

My overall stay was a mixed bag. While some staff members provided commendable service, there were serious privacy violations and significant safety and hygiene issues. I'd like to specifically commend Kari, Vincent, Emily, and Sophie. They were patient, responsive, and provided professional and attentive service, which greatly enhanced our trip. A special shout-out to Vincent; despite being a manager, he drove us around in the sightseeing buggy and even took us to a different location for a taxi, ensuring we got there comfortably. My service rating is solely for these staff members. However, some unacceptable problems arose: The breakfast hygiene was concerning; we found hair in the food. For a high-end hotel, such hygiene issues are inexcusable and raise serious food safety concerns. The privacy and security in the guest room were severely compromised. While someone was still in the room, a staff member knocked only once before immediately pushing the door open and looking directly towards the closet area. This was a grave infringement on guest privacy and a serious breach of security. When paying for a hotel room, guests are entitled to basic privacy. This incident was so severe it warranted calling the police. I felt a complete lack of security throughout my entire stay. The hotel's hardware and views are good, but the room management processes, breakfast hygiene, and staff entry protocols urgently need a complete overhaul. I would not recommend this hotel to travelers who prioritize privacy and hygiene. I hope the hotel takes this incident seriously, strengthens all-staff training, and prevents other guests from experiencing similar situations.

I've always been a big fan of Banyan Tree, having stayed at their properties in Yangshuo and Lijiang. So, arriving at Banyan Tree Jiuzhaigou after navigating the winding mountain roads felt perfectly in line with Banyan Tree's selection criteria – truly a haven away from the hustle and bustle. The hotel is situated at a higher elevation, offering breathtaking views, and a hike through the forest on its private hilltop leads to a small 'haizi' (highland lake). The signature incense, the aroma of their amenities, and the soft music wafting through the grass are all hallmarks of the Banyan Tree experience. Both the service and comfort levels met expectations. The hotel's design and materials are excellent, but I must admit that perhaps due to its age, or the challenging maintenance in the misty mountain environment, several areas are showing their wear and tear.

For my trip to Jiuzhaigou, I ended up choosing the family room at this hotel. It's the third closest hotel to the park entrance, less than a 10-minute walk, so you don't have to worry about getting stuck in traffic. The large hot tub was a nice bonus too. Breakfast was just okay, but the room was clean and there's a laundry room available. Overall, I think it's a pretty good hotel for the Jiuzhaigou Valley entrance area.

Extremely satisfied with our stay. The hotel's location is excellent, right next to the Qianguqing scenic area, making transportation very convenient. The decor is beautiful, elegant, and grand. Our room was spacious, well-equipped, clean, hygienic, and quiet, and even had a separate walk-in closet. The staff were incredibly warm and attentive. We were upgraded to a deluxe twin room for free because we had a child, and received welcome fruits and snacks. The breakfast selection was abundant. What particularly touched us was that we left our child's clothes in the room when checking out, and customer service promptly called us, allowing us to pick them up after we finished our sightseeing.

We chose this hotel after reading many objective reviews from previous guests. We arrived around 12 PM, and the front desk staff kindly upgraded us to a room on the second floor facing the inner courtyard (the second floor is drier, a good height, and rooms facing the courtyard are quieter than those facing the street). We had planned to revisit the park, so in the afternoon, we explored the attractions below Shuzheng Qunhai. In the evening, we had a 2-person yak hotpot set meal at the hotel for 190, which was authentic and more than we could finish. Unexpectedly, around 2 AM, I experienced altitude sickness with chest tightness and couldn't sleep. Worried about potential issues, I decided to cancel the rest of our trip. The front desk then helped us arrange a car to Huanglong Jiuzhai Station to catch the first high-speed train back to Chengdu. I'm especially grateful to the front desk for communicating with Trip.com regarding the refund (we had purchased a two-night group coupon). Their environment and service are truly excellent, and I highly recommend staying here. I also want to seriously warn tourists with pre-existing heart conditions to be cautious when traveling to high-altitude areas. Jiuzhai is beautiful, but your body needs to be compatible with the altitude!

When I booked the room, they promised a shuttle to the Jiuzhaigou scenic area, but when I checked in, they said the traffic police wouldn't allow it, citing traffic jams and so on. As a result, we had to walk for nearly half an hour. The bed was quite narrow, and the mattress creaked every time I turned over. For the complimentary breakfast, if you get two portions, you only get two portions. If more than two people stay in a room, you have to pay extra for breakfast, which is 30 yuan per person, or 20 yuan even with a discount. Previously, whenever breakfast was included, they would provide it for as many people as were staying. The breakfast was mainly vegetarian, but there was a decent variety. The place doesn’t worth the price. Just FYI: The night before I had stayed at another place, closer to the entrance park, only 100 kuai more expensive, and it was much better. 汀泉清居 has very kind, efficient and nice staff, but the situation of the hotel isn’t good. First, the room I stayed in had windows facing the main road, so it was very noisy. Second, the corridor with the rooms is on the same floor as the entrance, so the guests who arrived (in groups quite often) would make a big mess. Third, they have a ******* show at an open area just beside the hotel, making it even noisier. If you expect to relax after a full day of Jiuzhaigou, forget it! You’ll have to wait until after 21:30. After that, earplugs can help cancelling the noise of the road and the guests. Lastly, the shower definitely needs maintenance. It’s not the worst place; but, overall, it’s not a place to stay after spending the day at the amazing jiuzhai; I’d recommend you spend a few kuai more and book somewhere else.

Public transportation isn't the best option, so I'd recommend driving yourself or going with a tour group. Secondly, I booked a mountain view room, but the window glass facing the mountains really detracted from the view. For over 700 a night, which isn't cheap, you'd expect cleaner windows. I won't post photos, but other reviews mention the same issue. Then, the welcome fruit I was supposed to get for my points wasn't delivered, and the shuttle bus taking guests to the scenic area in the morning didn't even help with luggage. Finally, a big shout-out to the customer service小姐姐 (I forgot her name, but she looks a lot like Tong Yao). She was worried we'd miss our stop and came to pick us up early. She was also very prompt in addressing any issues we had. Thanks to her, I'm not leaving a negative review. Enough said.

This is an excellent guesthouse, and the host is incredibly friendly. We were driving ourselves and realized we wouldn't reach Jiuzhaigou until after 9 PM. Not wanting to drive late at night, we decided to make this guesthouse in the county town our stopover. The guesthouse itself is very stylishly designed, the rooms are spacious, and it offers excellent value for money. A special mention must go to the lovely lady who prepared our breakfast – I'm not sure if she's the owner or an employee. Not only was her food delicious, but she was also incredibly kind and chatted with us, sharing many fascinating stories about Jiuzhaigou before it became a popular tourist destination.

Facilities: I was completely surprised to find such a wonderful B&B in Jiuzhaigou. Even within the guesthouse, every facility, from the elevator to the lobby, from the private hot spring baths in the rooms to the smart toilets and toiletries, was truly exceptional. I was completely surprised by the quality of the B&B and was very satisfied. Cleanliness: It was exceptionally clean. From the moment I entered the B&B, I felt like I was in a paradise. With so many B&Bs in Heye Village, it's no wonder that Basong Shijing has such a high rating. Environment: Other B&Bs in the village are undergoing renovations and infrastructure work, which slightly affected the walk from Bonsai Beach to the B&B entrance. However, the B&B and the room itself were flawless. Most importantly, I was able to enjoy the rare tranquility of the early mornings and evenings within the valley, which was truly wonderful. Service: This is what truly makes a B&B stand out. From setting up a dedicated service group two days in advance to proactively providing information about parking for self-drive vehicles (this is crucial during peak season), Ms. You picked us up at the parking lot on time. The owner enthusiastically explained the itinerary throughout, and especially since we were two elderly people, she proactively offered to upgrade our rooms without changing rooms. From the restaurant staff to the housekeepers, everyone was incredibly welcoming and sincere. On our last morning, knowing we'd leave the valley before 7:30, they pre-packaged a hot breakfast for us. The man who escorted us was also very considerate. Overall, this is a dedicated team, and they provided excellent service to our two elderly family members. This is a B&B that truly makes you want to return time and time again, just like the scenery of Jiuzhaigou. The private hot springs are a must-try. The yak hot pot at the B&B is incredibly delicious, and the yak yogurt is even better. I'm still savoring it, hahaha. One small suggestion: the mattress is indeed a bit soft. I'd love to see if they can improve it, considering the cost. By the way, I haven't given a special like to the adorable little Bao (my irresistible smile) and the cold cat, hehe.

The room was spacious and felt great. It was clean, well-maintained, and fully equipped. Parking was super convenient right in front of the hotel, perfect for road trips, and the two parking attendants were very dedicated and responsible. However, there were about a dozen steps to get to the elevator, which was a bit inconvenient when carrying heavy luggage. Overall, it was a very good experience.

I had high expectations for hotels in Jiuzhaigou, and this one completely met my needs. First, it was clean and hygienic, and the room was well-ventilated with no strange odors. Second, there was plenty of hot water with good pressure for showering, which is super important! After a long day of sightseeing, a hot shower feels amazing. The toiletries were all Lux, which was a nice touch. Third, my parents tried out the private hot spring here and found it very comfortable – perfect for hot spring enthusiasts! Finally, the owner provides shuttle service to and from the scenic area; as long as you communicate in advance, they can usually accommodate. All in all, my parents and I were very satisfied with this hotel; we truly felt at ease during our stay. Oh, and the projector in the room was also very convenient and clear, and we could even cast to it! ✌🏻

The atmosphere was fantastic! The hotel offers free washing machines and dryers, and the room was clean and tidy. The front desk staff were also incredibly warm and friendly with excellent service. The young man who helped with parking was exceptionally proactive and enthusiastic, constantly running up and down to assist us with parking and moving the car. He even helped us with our luggage – truly outstanding service! If we ever come back to Jiuzhaigou, we'll definitely choose this place again.

🎫 Jiuzhaigou entrance tickets: what foreign travellers need to know

Make sure to read this before your visit! The park no longer sells tickets on-site. Online booking with your real name is mandatory, and visitors without a valid reservation will be refused entry.

The 2026 ticket prices are as follows:

  • Peak season, from 1 April to 15 November: CNY 190 entrance fee + CNY 90 for internal shuttle buses, CNY 280 in total.
  • Off-peak season, from 16 November to 31 March: CNY 80 entrance fee + CNY 80 for shuttle buses, CNY 160 in total.
  • Optional insurance: CNY 10.
  • Half-price tickets are available for children aged 7-18 and full-time students up to undergraduate level. Entry is free for visitors aged 65 and above, although shuttle bus fees still apply.

The daily visitor limit is set at 41,000 people during peak season and 23,000 during off-peak season. In July and August, booking slots can sell out within minutes.

Once inside the park, getting around is straightforward: shuttle buses run along each branch of the Y-shaped route and stop at every main attraction, with Nuorilang Centre acting as the main transport hub.

🚨 Important for international visitors: The official Chinese booking platform does not support online reservations using foreign passports. Overseas visitors must purchase tickets at the on-site ticket counter with their passport. Arrive early, and remember that ticket sales close at 2:00 pm, while the park closes at 6:00 pm.

⭐ Which way to get to Jiuzhaigou should you choose?

  • First trip with limited time: Take the train to Huanglong-Jiuzhai Station, then continue by official shuttle bus. It offers the best balance of travel time, price, and reliability.
  • Sensitive to altitude: Choose the train without hesitation. The gradual climb helps your body adapt better than a sudden increase in altitude.
  • Planning to visit both Jiuzhaigou and Huanglong: Take the train, then hire a private driver for two or three days to explore both areas.
  • Travelling on a tight budget with more time available: Take the direct bus from Chengdu, with a stop in Songpan along the way.
  • Travelling from Chongqing: Flying can still be a good option, but it depends on weather conditions.

💡 Things to know before travelling to Jiuzhaigou

  • Visa-free entry for eligible travellers: Citizens from the UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand can visit China visa-free for up to 30 days (currently valid until 31 December 2026). Check the latest entry requirements before travelling.
  • Do not visit the park on your arrival day: Spend one night acclimatising in Zhangzha Town first, especially before heading to higher areas such as Long Lake.
  • Allow two days for your visit: One day is enough for the highlights, but two days allow you to explore all three valleys at a more relaxed pace.
  • Dress in layers: Temperatures can vary significantly between the valley floor and higher viewpoints, and the weather can change quickly.
  • Choose the right season: Mid-October to early November offers the autumn colours that make Jiuzhaigou famous, but it is also the busiest period. Winter brings frozen waterfalls and lower prices, often around half the usual cost, although some trails may be closed.
  • Prepare your payments: Set up Alipay or WeChat Pay with a foreign bank card, and consider getting an eSIM to stay connected during your trip.

🗺️ Where to go after visiting Jiuzhaigou

Continuing your journey after Jiuzhaigou

If you have enough time, the other must-visit destination is undoubtedly Huanglong, located just 26 km from Huanglong-Jiuzhai Railway Station. Its ochre and turquoise travertine pools provide the perfect contrast to Jiuzhaigou’s colourful lakes. A bus connects the two sites from Zhangzha Bus Station, costing CNY 47.

Around 20 minutes from the railway station, the ancient town of Songpan and its Ming Dynasty city walls are also worth a stop, even if only to break up the return journey.

Further north, the Zoige Grasslands offer a completely different landscape, with vast highland scenery on the Tibetan Plateau. They can be reached via Huangshengguan Railway Station.
