Amazing
MM224587****This hotel was truly the highlight of my trip to Japan. Nestled on the hillside, the views from the window are breathtaking, especially from the infinity pool where you can overlook most of Beppu. It gives you a sense of serene detachment from the urban clamor, as if you're uniquely clear-headed amidst a busy world. During our stay, there were occasional showers, and after the rain, the mountains would often become shrouded in mist, making the landscape incredibly dynamic – sometimes clear and picturesque, other times beautifully hazy and ethereal.
The hotel's hot springs (onsen) are another major feature. The male and female baths are separate, ensuring privacy, and each has its own outdoor bath. What's more, the male and female sections switch over daily, so if you stay two nights, you get to experience both unique bath areas. The hotel also provides guests with traditional Japanese yukata robes and geta (wooden clogs).
Regarding transportation, since the hotel is on a hillside, they offer a shuttle bus. However, it's small with limited seating, so reservations are essential. What's fantastic is that if you can't reserve a spot, the hotel *provides a taxi free of charge*. Let me emphasize that: free, free, free! So, the only potential inconvenience of staying here is perfectly addressed.
While the standard breakfast selection is decent, they also have a 'hidden menu' – definitely ask for it!

Amazing
SSikiqiThis hotel is perfectly located right in the heart of Beppu's Hells, with attractions literally on its doorstep. All five Hells (Jigoku) are within a 3-5 minute walk, which is incredibly convenient!
While the hotel's exterior is unassuming, its interior is a hidden gem. The Japanese garden in the common areas is beautiful. Our room was spacious with a great view, allowing us to see the steam rising from the Hells. Plus, having a private onsen in the room meant we could soak to our heart's content! We even had the large public bath all to ourselves during our visit.
The Teppanyaki set meal we booked was a good experience, though we wished there was a little more meat.
We specifically requested Japanese-style breakfast when booking, but for some reason, we were given Western-style instead. When we inquired, the staff informed us that it couldn't be changed.
On a very positive note, it was our wedding anniversary trip, and the hotel thoughtfully prepared a small gift and took commemorative photos for us – a very nice touch! Aside from these minor issues, everything else was fantastic.
The only real downside was the hotel's shuttle service to the station. While they offer it, the last departure is strictly before 11 AM. If you miss it, you have to take a taxi. It feels a bit inconvenient to offer a service with such a limited timeframe. For instance, we visited the Hells in the morning and ended up leaving the hotel after 11 AM, so we had to take a taxi to the JR station. An improvement here would be much appreciated!
Overall, my husband, who was visiting Japan for the first time, said it was an excellent Japanese onsen hotel experience. He gives it a big thumbs up!

WWeeeeeThank you ”Super Hotel” for your hospitality. Hotel inclusive breakfast are good and yummy. Refill, drinks are fantastic! Room is clean. Bathroom super small thought and it's okay. Location is next to Beppu Station and convinean to go anywhere. Staffs are professional, friendly and helpful. Thank you and will recommend friends to come and stay at your hotel 😃
GGuest UserWhat a pleasant surprise. Rex Hotel Beppu , from entering the hotel til the end (luggage pickup) the experience we had here was beyond excellent. I will bring my family here next time. 😃
JJunangI stayed in Beppu for 4 nights, trying different onsens at different hotels.Tsuruta was my last Beppu hotel. Although the room i stayed in is rather dated and items worn out, all necessary equipment are working very well, i stayed at a newer 4.5 star hotel prior and the air-conditioner, hair dryer and toilet exhaust were noisy and faulty, while in the older Tsuruta where everything works well! This don't judge a book by its cover, older hotels is just as good! I've attached a photo of the park and harbour view from my room at Tsuruta.
XXieguankuangrenThe room is spacious with a mountain view overlooking the sea. Its location is far from the city center. It's definitely a genuine sulfur hot spring, permeated with its natural smell. It's suitable for a secluded retreat with half-board, but the hotel itself isn't very large and has limited facilities, so one night is enough. We experienced heavy rain in Northern Kyushu from August 8-10, which limited the scenery and discounted the overall experience.
GGuest UserThe entryway is very spacious, and the room itself is surprisingly large, even bigger than it appears in the photos. The sea view is beautiful, and soaking in the hot spring at night felt just like having a private onsen. There's a bus stop right outside, with direct service to Chinoike Jigoku (Blood Pond Hell). Beppu Kitahama is right next door, and Don Quijote is just a short walk further. While it's a bit of a walk from Beppu Station, staying right by the sea often means sacrificing a little bit of convenience.
LLuoxufenfeiThe Star Hotel is right next to Beppu Station, within a 5-minute walk of the bus station and Ginza Street. I chose a larger, more distinctive Japanese-style room, complete with tatami, a closet, and a folding table! The bed was even made for me, and the quilt was incredibly comfortable! Towels and yukata were also provided, but the bathroom was incredibly cramped, with barely any standing room!
If you're looking for a hot spring bath, the hotel front desk provides free tickets to three nearby hot spring hotels. I chose Beppu Onsen, located right in front of the station. It's a great location, with a comfortable seating area and a large pool!
GGuest UserThis room is best suited for couples or solo travelers. If you're over 180cm (about 5'11”) tall, I strongly advise against booking it as you'll find it extremely cramped. Similarly, if a couple is on the larger side, it might be a tight squeeze. It's truly ideal only for those who are not particularly tall or big.
The main perk is the access to the hot springs at the adjacent hotel, where the water is wonderfully soothing. Although there's a hot spring swimming pool upstairs, it was too cold and windy to enjoy; I visited in late May, and it was still quite cool.
The location is very convenient, with supermarkets and convenience stores nearby. It's an 8-minute walk from Beppu Station, and even if you arrive by bus, it's just a 10-minute stroll, making transport very easy.
GGuest UserThe receptionist was courteous. The other staff members were also considerate. The rooms are clean and have plenty of amenities. The breakfast was luxurious and filling.
