After carefully weighing options for a 5 day stay in the San Juan area, I settled on staying at the Embassy in Carolina. Having been there now, I have much to share with others. First, what others have said about the dated-ness (and to a lesser extent cleanliness) is absolutely true: the rooms are somewhat dated, sure, and it’s hard to make rusting door frames and peeling tub finish look ‘clean’ so I think that going so far to say that it’s dirty is unfair. The place is just old. Now that being said: the pluses outweigh these minuses. It’s a short pleasant walk to the best beach in all of metropolitan San Juan (Isla Verde) - a safe clean calm no riptide prone beach. There is a great 24 hour supermarket around the corner a 4 minute walk away that has a post office, and Uber rides into Old San Juan are $7-14. Close to all excursions meeting points, and the hotel has its own private beach chairs, umbrellas, and beach towels for guests. The included breakfast is excellent 6:30-9:00 and the custom omelet is fantastic. There is a free 2 drink happy hour daily, and the bartenders at the bar are as skilled as they were knowledgeable. A negative is a hefty dailyhidden resort fee, but the conveniences here make up for the fee.
