My wife and I came to Norfolk to see the Swallowtail butterfly, the only place in the country where it is found. Fortunately, despite the poor weather, we did spot one at Hickling Broad NNR flying back and forth over the reeds. So, mission accomplished. We stayed in one of the suites at Lound farm, and it was an exceptional, luxurious experience. Although more of a small house than a suite! A large, very large bed, a large, very large, bathroom with his and her's wash basins, and a comfortable sitting room. We were waited on at breakfast by three generations of the family. Plenty of options on the menu to choose from. And it was at breakfast that "Granny" suggested that we visit How Hill, and take a boat trip on the 'electric eel' through the reedbeds. We did, and what an experience. Because of the inclement weather, we were the only two people on the one hour tour though the Broad. So we had the services of a private guide. We were in another world for an hour, gliding quietly along in the electric boat. We spotted the milk parsley plant, favoured by the Swallowtail, heard a bittern booming, and watched marsh harriers soaring overhead. We also visited the Secret garden at How Hill. An amazing oasis in the middle of a wood. An absolute must-visit. We spent two evenings at the Ingham Swan restaurant, excellent, top quality cuisine and service. We visited Sea Palling, Horsey Windpump, watched a colony of little terns on the beach at Winterton on Sea; and had quite possibly the best fish and chips ever at the chippy in the middle of Winterton. We will definitely come back to the Broads, if only to hopefully have warmer days to see more butterflies. And Dairy Barns wil be our go-to accommodation. Go to the top of the class, Hannah and team.
