The historical significance of this venue must be highlighted to illustrate its uniqueness in Nara - We signed up for the complimentary tour of the hotel offered to hotel guests on certain mornings of the week and had the pleasure of having Ms. Sato, the director of marketing, introduce the story of Shisui and its past-life as the residence of the governor of Nara between 1922 to 2017, then as Shisui hotel with guest-rooms designed by renown architect Kengo Kuma. The emperor of Japan had stayed on property in post-war to sign the San Francisco treaty. Sato-san's thorough introduction in fluent-english had me realise a stay at this hotel is a unique experience in the way that it is beyond just luxury. The staff had been wonderful and eager to please without pushiness. It was much appreciated, as it gave room for my wife and I to enjoy each other's company at this perfectly peaceful property. The staff had been amazing from the beginning, at check-in, we had Rika-san, a lady with eyes that can smile, to help us check-in while we rest our feet at the lounge with tea, then guide us to our room while briefing us on all its amenities. The rooms were modern with accents of traditional Japanese designs to remind me of the locations' history. Details like the washroom walls that look like zen-gardens and overall wooden decor made my stay at the room one of the most relaxing experiences ever at any hotel. The French-Japanese wine-paired dinner at Suiyou was also our culinary highlight of our two-week vacation in Japan. In summary, after the two night stay, my wife had requested that we should come back to Shisui in the spring, summer and fall to experience all the seasons at this venue.

It has a good location, a long history, and retro architecture. Many celebrities once lived there. The restaurant inside is also a famous restaurant, and you need to book in advance to enjoy it. Excellent service from the service staff. A female lobby staff member named ”Li” in Japanese provided very good service. Even though we didn't understand the language, she took the trouble to communicate with me. She also helped us call a car and sent us to the car. The Japanese service is absolutely top notch. It is also true that the room facilities are outdated. See picture.

The outdoor hot spring pool experience is also very good, with beautiful scenery. It would be better if the tank could be larger. Otherwise, 2-3 people living in a room would not be able to experience it in 50 minutes. This is not very user-friendly. You are only given 50 minutes depending on the number of people, and the tank is too small so only one person can go in and soak in. Others have to wait outside, and couples cannot enjoy it at the same time. 🥺🥺🥺 3. In addition, the food is pretty good. Drinks are not included. There are not many amazing flavors. The first cold dish is the best. 4. The night view of Mt. Wakakusa is great, I must like this! The hotel will drive you up the mountain to see it👍 Let’s talk about the points that need to be improved: 1. The hotel service is a bit embarrassing, and the attitude is excellent, but there are always some indescribable feelings of inconsistency, such as kneeling service during check-in, and dining activities in the back. The waiter who checks you in does not even remember your last name and where you are. There are only a few rooms in the hotel (not for such a small-scale boutique B&B with few rooms), and there are obvious traces of the process. He also said that he would help to ask if there is any space in the private hot spring the next morning, but nothing was said. 🐶 2. The pillows on the bed in the room are very uncomfortable and too high. There is no difference between the two pillows as they are high. There is no choice. Be careful of stiff neck. 👴 3. The included dinner does not include drinks and menu upgrades, which need to be ordered separately, but we did not order them. When we checked out, the waitress came to ask us for payment. When we expressed confusion, she asked us if we had ordered dinner. Extra drinks. Please, don’t you keep track of whether guests order or not? Wouldn't it be rude to ask guests to confirm the check-out time themselves? 🙁 4. After observing the guests who stayed that day, basically the majority were Chinese (including Hong Kong and Taiwan), followed by a few European, American and Japanese guests. However, the hotel did not have a Chinese-speaking waiter. In addition to Japanese, it was Japanese-style English that was forced to recite words. I want to say that although you can communicate in English, but if you can't speak it, are you really respecting the Chinese guests by talking like a duck throughout the process? After all, it is extremely difficult to communicate like this. Some Japanese people cannot understand the English they speak. I wonder how the hotel has no Chinese-speaking waiters when there are so many Chinese guests and they even open Weibo for promotion? 🙁

Stayed in Japan for 10 days, this is the best place to stay! In the center of Nara's major attractions, Spring Festival Club, Nara Museum, Dongda Temple are within ten minutes walk. The environment in the museum is beautiful, the owner's aesthetics are online, the style is very high, the room is all flowers bought on the same day, the owner personally inserted. Welcomed right from the get go even though our room wasn't quite ready! The staff were incredibly kind. Honestly, finding an affordable accommodation in Nara at this good of a location does not come easy, and so if you're traveling on a budget this is an excellent option. Room was very clean, air conditioning worked very well on those hot summer days, we were in the budget room but it was still decently comfortable and spacious for two people. Definitely would recommend.

We are coming from Osaka, take JR to Nara Station and transfer to a taxi for 5 minutes. I think it is OK for 700 yen. Staying in one berth and two meals, dinner and breakfast are delicious ～ very satisfied with the meal! The check-in counter staff is not as kind and enthusiastic as other hot spring hotel staff... The only thing that feels bad is that although I forgot to inform the allergic food in advance (the counter said that I had to write to him three days in advance), I just asked him to remove it for me if he had it. I didn't ask him to hand over the dishes, but I was rejected. They were all on, telling me that I could choose not to eat. I was not very satisfied with this treatment, although he told me which dish was added shrimp... However, each of the women in the restaurant was very kind and enthusiastic. Since the counter told me that the meal could not be withdrawn, I asked the woman to tell me which dish had shrimp and I asked her to withdraw it, but the woman hurriedly apologized to me and said that I would make a new meal and then send it up. I researched a ridiculously long time to find a comfortable authentic ryokan experience in Nara so we could enjoy a more relaxed time in Nara as a family vs just a typical day trip. My husband was VERY reluctant to spend such a large amount on a one night stay where we'd be sleeping on the floor in the room with the kids but I assured him this was a not-to-miss experience, and for the price it was definitely going to be a comfortable night sleep on the floor with lots of padding under the futon mattresses. I was wrong. Not only did it feel like camping out on a hard floor, but the rice paper on the windows did absolutely nothing to block out the bright streetlight outside the window. Between the hard floor and the bright street light glaring into the room, it was a very uncomfortable night of sleep, to say the least. ”Don't worry, this will be an unforgettable Japanese kaiseki meal! It's worth paying so much!” Again, inwas wrong. While the staff was incredibly thoughtful with any pre-discussed food options, and the service was delightful, the food was hit or miss. Some courses were lovely, both as a piece of art in their presentation and also delicious! But aggressively overcooking fish and seafood is just beyond unacceptable. Also, I was disappointed to discover that dinner was served in the dining room, not in our private room, as I had assumed. We chose the western option for breakfast. It was pretty terrible, I have to admit. Perhaps we should have opted for the Japanese option in retrospect. I thought my kids would be more likely to eat a western breakfast, but it just wasn't good. Cold eggs, chicken nuggets, stale bread. One of my daughters and I briefly enjoyed the small public onsen inside the inn and that was nice! I feel bad writing a poor review because I REALLY wanted to love this place, and the staff is very warm, thoughtful, and caring. But with the disappointing food and uncomfortable night's sleep, I just can't recommend staying here for the amount of money we spent. Not the splurge-worthy experience I was hoping for, sadly.

I think this is the most Japanese-style house. It’s very good. I like it, especially because it’s in the park itself. The sika deer is right in front of the window. The landlord’s morning is very delicious. My son wants a second portion. Hahahaha. Jia Feng here. It’s simple, especially the landlord’s house that has a lot of old records. It’s a rare treat to listen to his collection of valuable jazz music and eat a delicious breakfast.

This is a hotel I really like. There is a hot spring in the room. There is no public hot spring bath, which is probably the only drawback. Very designer boutique hotel style. Minibars are free. The room is big enough. The toiletries are all organic and smell very comfortable. The smell of essential oils and incense is everywhere. It only costs 5,500 a night including breakfast and dinner, which is very cost-effective. The location is super good. Nara Park is right outside the door. The scenery inside the hotel is also beautiful. The bamboo forest can rival Arashiyama's Internet celebrity attractions. Parking is free, and there are waiters who can speak a lot of Chinese.

The Ryokan is located about 20 minutes walk from Nara Station. The biggest plus point of this Ryokan is its location. Just next to the hotel you walk to the temples and to Nara Park. That's very nice with the loose herds, especially during the Sakura. You are welcomed friendly and you are talking good English, they're trying to make the guests all their best, we had a Japanese-style room with futon beds, the room was spacious. There was a shared bathroom, but you had a private toilet with a washing table. We stayed here one night, we got breakfast in the room. It was wide but it was entirely Japanese. So we, the Dutch, have no good food, we have been walking to the Seven Eleven for a little to have a coffee and bread, and, as I said, we stayed one night, and that was good, and it wasn't clean. We were not used to that in Japan, on the ceiling of the room, sweet spots like on the walls, in the shower, many hairs in the pot, and the futons were very shocked, badly sleeping, and unfortunately, the staff's service was high again. But the next time, look at something else, because the price was not in line with quality.

The room was obviously suitable for 3 people, but one of the single beds was removed, despite still having three sets of cups, toothbrushes and so on. The bathroom was the smallest I have ever seen and the water pressure in the shower was not very good. However, hot drinks are served in the lobby, which also offers a foot massager, the New York Times and the English version of the Japanese daily. Breakfast is served in a comfortable small basement with reasonable choice of Japanese and Western food. Front desk staff is very helpful. If the room is for three people, the luggage for three people will be very crowded, but we only have two people to stay overnight, and only two people have luggage.
