🏙️ Must-Visit Districts in Osaka

Dotonbori and Namba

Dotonbori and Namba: the beating heart of Osaka

If there are neighbourhoods that truly embody Osaka, it’s Namba and Dotonbori! This is the perfect place to discover the city’s finest boutiques and its famous neon signs (including the iconic Glico Man sign!). Japan’s Times Square! By day or by night, this area never stops buzzing, and you’ll find shops and restaurants open at any time of day or night.

To make the most of the neighbourhood, we recommend strolling along the canal and hopping aboard a cruise on the Tombori River to admire the city from the water. Between strolls, take the time to try takoyaki (octopus balls) or okonomiyaki (savoury Japanese pancake), both local specialities prepared right before your eyes. An absolute treat!

Shinsekai and Tennoji: retro, working-class charm

Time for a change of scene—make way for the city's calm. Further south, Shinsekai immerses you in a retro atmosphere inspired by Paris and New York in the early 20th century. The neighbourhood is dominated by the Tsutenkaku Tower, a truly nostalgic emblem of the city!

Here—and you’ll notice it in no time—life moves at a laid-back pace: people play pachinko, savour kushikatsu (crispy breaded skewers), and chat in izakaya; in short, it feels like you’re visiting a little village in a big city!

Just next door, and if time permits, we recommend Spa World, which offers Japanese baths, saunas and relaxation areas — a relaxing and typically local experience!

Finally, if you’re a fan of panoramic views, head to the neighbouring Tennoji district, home to Shitennoji Temple (founded in the 6th century) as well as the famous Abeno Harukas skyscraper, the tallest in Japan with its panoramic observation deck!

Osaka Bay: leisure and entertainment

Osaka Bay

After exploring Osaka’s must-see streets and neighbourhoods, why not discover all the leisure activities in and around Osaka? Here’s our selection of the best things to do (whether you’re with family, friends, or as a couple):

●      🎢 Universal Studios Japan, one of the most visited theme parks in the world

●      🍄 Super Nintendo World! Rediscover your inner child and immerse yourself completely in the world of Mario and his friends (including Harry Potter’s castle!)

●      🐋 Kaiyukan Aquarium, one of the largest aquariums in the world, where you can, among other things, see whale sharks. Book your tickets now!

●      🎡 Tempozan Ferris Wheel, towering over the port and offering a magnificent view of the bay

Umeda: modernity and panoramic views

Another must-visit district is Umeda in the north of Osaka. It’s literally the symbol of the modern city! Between its glass towers and underground arcades, you’ll dive straight into the city of tomorrow!

To kick things off, head up to the top of the Umeda Sky Building for a 360° panorama of the city (a breathtaking view!). We also recommend going at night—the view is even more spectacular, with Osaka’s lights stretching all the way to the bay.

If the urge to shop strikes, don’t panic—shopping centres like Grand Front Osaka, LUCUA, or HEP Five (recognisable by its large red Ferris wheel perched on the roof) offer a wide choice of boutiques, designer cafés, and traditional restaurants with panoramic views.

The location of the hotel is pretty convenient. 5–6 minutes walk to Hommachi St., which you can easily use to travel to Kyoto, Kobe, etc.  The check-in and check-out were really fast, and we had an upgrade, which was worth the price. I had read the previous reviews about the rudeness of the staff, which is not actually due to this, but it’s the language barrier that could make a tired traveller a little less patient.  If you wish to ask something more specific, please don’t be afraid to use the Google Translate app to help you with the communication. The staff have been really helpful to all of our enquiries. Some remarks were about the hotel lobby being on the 15th floor, but they have a dedicated entrance for taxis or cars to reach the hotel.  Bonus: if you exit through KoKuMiN Osaka Metro Yodoyabashi Station (Exit 4) on your right is a local grocery store that sells local produce and other fruits/food products. It's cheaper to go here to buy your drinks and fruits, etc.

Excellent location above Osaka Takashimaya, linked to Namba Station directly by lift. Getting to the hotel was abit confusing using google maps until we figured it out. Overall their location makes for ease of shopping & convenient offload the bags in the hotel room. The check in desk was very professional & the bath tub was European size (we booked twin beds). Of the 3 hotels that we booked in Osaka (&Here Namba, Universal Port Vita, Swissotel), Swissotel was the only hotel that could read & execute our consistent requests to push the twin beds together so our toddler could sleep in the middle. Thumbs up for their professionalism. There was also a pair of kid slippers laid out for our kid. There is a friendly hotel bar (free entry, subject to opening hours in afternoon) on level 9 that allows one to play retro video games like Mario & board games etc. Our kid throughly enjoyed their hotel bar games. As Swissôtel is a business hotel, there is no water pitcher in the room & no ice dispenser room. The toilet is a combined one-room facility. However, the rooms are quiet, the water pressure is great & everyone slept really well. Thanks Swissotel

The service was excellent, especially from the Chinese-speaking staff! They were enthusiastic, proactive, and full of energy, which made our trip much more convenient. The hotel's location is superb, with a subway station directly on the B2 level and Daimaru department store right across the street. Shinsaibashi is just behind Daimaru. Cleanliness is absolutely no concern, and the toiletries are La Mer. The buffet breakfast offers both Western and Japanese options. We chose Western both days, and the restaurant staff promptly accommodated our request to sit by the window. The pastries at Nikko's breakfast are delicious; I highly recommend trying them and not being afraid of the sweetness – it's likely the rich flavor from Hokkaido milk, which I really enjoyed. Overall, I think staying at Hotel Nikko in Osaka is great in every aspect.

The location is great and easy to find, right outside the subway station. It's within 2km of Shinsaibashi, Kuromon Market, and Dotonbori, so it's perfectly fine to walk there. The room is quiet and comfortable. The space isn't huge compared to rooms in China, but for Japan, it's pretty good. It has a sofa, a bed, a table, a cabinet, and even space for luggage. It's very quiet; I'd recommend choosing a room on the seventh floor or higher for a better view. The breakfast is excellent! I especially recommend the croissants, fresh vegetable salad, tuna salad, and the boiled eggs – the whites are tender and smooth, and the yolks are wonderfully rich and fragrant. Highly recommend!

This hotel is excellent. Among all the hotels I've stayed at in Japan, this one offers exceptional value for money. It's divided into East and West wings, with the East wing housing a gym. The breakfast spread is incredibly rich, comparable to a five-star hotel in China. During off-peak seasons, the price is almost the same as a five-star hotel back home, making it a fantastic deal in Japan. The environment is also great, and the rooms are very spacious.

Breakfasts are delicious, and the location is perfect — very convenient for exploring the city. The hotel is new, beautifully designed, and extremely comfortable — a real gem! My stay was so pleasant and memorable. I’m already looking forward to coming back!

Traveling with family, had to wait in line to do laundry in the middle of the night, and it was quite a scramble with many people. Getting around wasn't convenient at all, it was all walking, walking, and more walking. I'd recommend staying near the CBD; it's much easier to get everywhere from there.

The location is absolutely superb, and the staff were incredibly welcoming. Right downstairs, you'll find a 7-Eleven and a Daikoku Drugstore. The room was spotless and well-soundproofed. Nakanoshima Museum of Art and Kosetsu Museum of Art are practically on your doorstep. Major department stores in Umeda are just a 10-minute walk away. Osaka Station, the Yotsubashi and Midosuji subway lines, and Yodoyabashi Station (Keihan Electric Railway terminus) are all within easy walking distance. Overall, the convenience is simply unbeatable.

The hotel interior is a bit old but clean and the service is excellent. The noise is like white noise, understandable given its location above the station. The hotel rooms are on floors 21-27. The 27th-floor lounge is not open to all guests; there's no free lounge access. The location is super convenient with Osaka Station and Daimaru department store downstairs, plus Lucua and Eki Marche shopping centers nearby. It's perfect if you want to shop around the Umeda area. We chose it specifically for its excellent location: the Osaka Loop Line provides direct access to Kansai Airport and Universal Studios. On the first night, the soundproofing wasn't great; we could hear our neighbors coughing. After reporting it to the front desk, they immediately upgraded us to a larger room with no neighbors in front or behind, free of charge. During the room change, I left an apple and a cake in the fridge, and they even brought them over to the new room. Additionally, the front desk offers complimentary DHC skincare samples. Overall, the excellent service attitude compensated for some of the hotel's older aspects. The biggest advantage is definitely the location, and the price is reasonable.

The location is incredibly convenient, right next to Umeda and Osaka, with several smaller train stations easily accessible. There's a convenience store right downstairs, and plenty of dining options just a short walk away. Overall, the place was very clean, tidy, and a decent size. The only downside was the sheer number of izakayas on the ground floor, leading to many touts or promoters trying to solicit customers.

The Holiday Inn Osaka Namba was an excellent choice for my trip! I was so impressed with the location. It's absolutely perfect for exploring Osaka, as it is just steps away from the heart of Dotonbori and surrounded by major shopping areas. Being able to step out and immediately be in the middle of the action—from famous food stalls to department stores—made the entire trip so convenient. Furthermore, the hotel itself was wonderfully clean and well-maintained. The staff were friendly, and the room provided a comfortable and quiet retreat after busy days of sightseeing.

The hotel is in between Shinsaibashi Station and Nagahoribashi Station. The staff are polite and friendly. The room is decent size for two people, though 2 open luggages can only be done halfway open, but sti ok. There’s free hot & cold drinks at the lounge area which is open from 5am to 12mn. The buffet breakfast is nice, mostly local Japanese foods (which we like), i can say that the cereal can be considered western. 😁 There’s a family mart just 2-5mins walk. And you can also walk to Namba from the hotel. Overall, it is a good hotel choice when in Osaka.

I have a great stay at Citadines. Was not expecting a lot as i merely booked it as the one day tour company request to stay in hotel near Namba. It definitely exceeded my expectations in many ways. Location is around 200m to Kuromon market where you can find plenty of goodies and food. It also connects to the popular Dotonburi where you will go crazy finding outlets like Onitsuka Tiger & Popmart as well as popular eateries like Ichiran ramen! Good to book a premier room that comes with a kitchen. It does daily housekeeping with lounges & a launderette. Very happy to stay there! Highly recommended!

The hotel's location is excellent; it's just a short walk through an underground passage to all the major shopping malls in Umeda, which is super convenient when it rains. The room isn't huge, but it was no problem to open two large suitcases flat on the floor. I didn't get to try the public bath this time. For Halloween, the hotel even had special decorations, which was a nice touch. There's also an airport bus stop about a five-minute walk away. Overall, I'm very satisfied.

This is easily one of the best hotels we’ve stayed at in Japan! We stayed for three nights and the location is unbeatable, literally steps from the train station and a 1-minute walk to Universal Studios. It is on the Universal City Walk street where you can find handful of restaurants and some shopping, Lawson is just next door. The room was spacious for Japan standards, very clean, and well-maintained. Receptionist is super friendly and trying her best to explain everything for us. We loved the daily free coffee vouchers, though keep in mind they are only valid from 2 PM onwards. Also, the rooftop onsen costs an extra 2,150 yen, but it’s worth it! It includes a free beer or ice cream at the lounge afterward, which has an incredible view. Highly recommended!

The hotel was inflexible about changing rooms unless it was the same room type. However, the location is great. I'd choose to stay here again next time for several reasons. First, it's very close to Solaniwa Onsen, which is open from 11 AM to 11 PM. This is a perfect option for those with an early check-out and a late flight. Second, there are a few good restaurants nearby, located on the upper floor of the mall between the hotel and Solaniwa Onsen (see attached photos). Third, the city view from the 51st floor during breakfast or dinner is absolutely worth checking out. Fourth, you can take the subway directly to Kansai Airport without any transfers. Just pay attention to the announcements; about two stops before the airport, the train splits, so make sure you're in the correct car. The front desk also has staff who speak Chinese!

Located around 5-10 minutes walk from Yodoyabashi Station, somewhat in the middle of the business district stands the Hotel Resol Trinity Osaka. Yodoyabashi station is a pretty convenient location, as it was minutes away from Osaka-Umeda Station as well as Shinsaibashi and Osaka-Namba station, which were all on the same line which made travelling around a breeze. The ambience and feel of the hotel was very inviting and comfortable. We had booked the Hollywood Twin Room, and it was quite small, but I would rather describe it as cozy, though my only grouse was that the beds were too close to each other, and the lack of space for 2 huge luggages. I do love that although a bit on the small side, they still managed to fit in a nice Japanese bath to soak away the fatigue. Besides that, there was nothing much to complain about, as the beds were comfortable and not overly hard, and the staff were pretty warm, friendly, professional and efficient. The highlight was definitely the breakfast, which had a nice variety and were pretty delicious. Overall, a fantastic choice and a definite contender when we next go back to Osaka.

Checked in yesterday. The place is clean and okay. However, since they are doing renovations in the building, there is no heater, so it gets very cold. Fortunately, blankets are already provided, so there’s no need to ask for another one. The cold is manageable because the blanket is thick.

The overall service was good and staff are friendly with the exception of an incident which prompted me to write an only average review for this hotel. Paid parking is compulsory at 1500 Yen per day for the rental car. However the metal pole preventing illegal parking was not put down and ultimately damaged the rental car I was driving. To make things worse, staff told me they are not liable for the mistake when on the first day they had actually put both barriers down. Think they did the same when I return to the hotel to park again, I successfully parked my vehicle in without noticing that the barrier on the passenger side was not down and resulting in a bad scratch when I drove the car out.

I’d rate Hillarys Shinsaibashi 4.5 stars. The location is absolutely perfect – right in the middle of the action. Even though it’s in a busy tourist area, the rooms are surprisingly quiet, and I slept well without being disturbed by street noise. The staff are super friendly, everything in the room works as it should, and there are plenty of washing machines, which is very convenient. The amenities are solid and of good quality. The room itself is on the smaller side. You can’t really open a large suitcase completely. Otherwise, it’s comfortable. The bed is great, the ventilation and plumbing worked perfectly. The only downside is that it was a bit dusty. Overall, though, it’s a really nice and convenient place to stay.

There's really no downside except for the small size, but everything else was so perfect that the size became negligible. I had a very comfortable stay and even took a bath. The room was spotless, though I hope they can pay a bit more attention to detailed cleaning. On the first day, there was a strange transparent stain on the chair, and I had to wipe it before I dared to sit down. However, the bed, windows, bathroom, and table were all very clean. The TV was super new with tons of channels, and you could even watch YouTube, which was very helpful. The front desk service was also great; they came to help when I couldn't figure out the self check-in on the first day. Now for my personal experience: I found the bed a bit too soft. If you're not used to sleeping on soft beds or have back issues, you might want to consider this. It's very close to FamilyMart, making it super convenient for buying food. However, it's a bit of an awkward distance from both Kitahama and Yodoyabashi stations – not too close, not too far, which was a bit annoying. The walk to and from the hotel every day felt a bit long. Finally, I highly recommend the food! First, try the chicken cutlet and marinated eggs from FamilyMart; the chicken is juicy and the eggs are very fragrant. Then there's Dorosoba, a bit further than FamilyMart. The old man who runs it is very nice and will use a little Chinese to tell you what's good and what's less popular. If you're worried about communication, just go in, find the ramen machine, switch it to Chinese, and pay with cash. But the grandpa is really cute; when he serves the food, he'll say, ”Very, very, very delicious rich ramen!” And it really is delicious! I actually ate there twice in two days, both times ordering the chicken broth ramen.
