🏙️ Must-Visit Districts in Osaka

Dotonbori and Namba

Dotonbori and Namba: the beating heart of Osaka

If there are neighbourhoods that truly embody Osaka, it’s Namba and Dotonbori! This is the perfect place to discover the city’s finest boutiques and its famous neon signs (including the iconic Glico Man sign!). Japan’s Times Square! By day or by night, this area never stops buzzing, and you’ll find shops and restaurants open at any time of day or night.

To make the most of the neighbourhood, we recommend strolling along the canal and hopping aboard a cruise on the Tombori River to admire the city from the water. Between strolls, take the time to try takoyaki (octopus balls) or okonomiyaki (savoury Japanese pancake), both local specialities prepared right before your eyes. An absolute treat!

Shinsekai and Tennoji: retro, working-class charm

Time for a change of scene—make way for the city's calm. Further south, Shinsekai immerses you in a retro atmosphere inspired by Paris and New York in the early 20th century. The neighbourhood is dominated by the Tsutenkaku Tower, a truly nostalgic emblem of the city!

Here—and you’ll notice it in no time—life moves at a laid-back pace: people play pachinko, savour kushikatsu (crispy breaded skewers), and chat in izakaya; in short, it feels like you’re visiting a little village in a big city!

Just next door, and if time permits, we recommend Spa World, which offers Japanese baths, saunas and relaxation areas — a relaxing and typically local experience!

Finally, if you’re a fan of panoramic views, head to the neighbouring Tennoji district, home to Shitennoji Temple (founded in the 6th century) as well as the famous Abeno Harukas skyscraper, the tallest in Japan with its panoramic observation deck!

Osaka Bay: leisure and entertainment

Osaka Bay

After exploring Osaka’s must-see streets and neighbourhoods, why not discover all the leisure activities in and around Osaka? Here’s our selection of the best things to do (whether you’re with family, friends, or as a couple):

●      🎢 Universal Studios Japan, one of the most visited theme parks in the world

●      🍄 Super Nintendo World! Rediscover your inner child and immerse yourself completely in the world of Mario and his friends (including Harry Potter’s castle!)

●      🐋 Kaiyukan Aquarium, one of the largest aquariums in the world, where you can, among other things, see whale sharks. Book your tickets now!

●      🎡 Tempozan Ferris Wheel, towering over the port and offering a magnificent view of the bay

Umeda: modernity and panoramic views

Another must-visit district is Umeda in the north of Osaka. It’s literally the symbol of the modern city! Between its glass towers and underground arcades, you’ll dive straight into the city of tomorrow!

To kick things off, head up to the top of the Umeda Sky Building for a 360° panorama of the city (a breathtaking view!). We also recommend going at night—the view is even more spectacular, with Osaka’s lights stretching all the way to the bay.

If the urge to shop strikes, don’t panic—shopping centres like Grand Front Osaka, LUCUA, or HEP Five (recognisable by its large red Ferris wheel perched on the roof) offer a wide choice of boutiques, designer cafés, and traditional restaurants with panoramic views.

The location of the hotel is pretty convenient. 5–6 minutes walk to Hommachi St., which you can easily use to travel to Kyoto, Kobe, etc.  The check-in and check-out were really fast, and we had an upgrade, which was worth the price. I had read the previous reviews about the rudeness of the staff, which is not actually due to this, but it’s the language barrier that could make a tired traveller a little less patient.  If you wish to ask something more specific, please don’t be afraid to use the Google Translate app to help you with the communication. The staff have been really helpful to all of our enquiries. Some remarks were about the hotel lobby being on the 15th floor, but they have a dedicated entrance for taxis or cars to reach the hotel.  Bonus: if you exit through KoKuMiN Osaka Metro Yodoyabashi Station (Exit 4) on your right is a local grocery store that sells local produce and other fruits/food products. It's cheaper to go here to buy your drinks and fruits, etc.

First time to Osaka and chose this hotel for family of 4 due to the great reviews. Location is super as it is just next to Takashimaya and the subway is just right below the hotel. The room is so clean, spacious and cozy and the kids love it. Not looking back and looking forward to come back here again.

Seeing comments about La Mer toiletries immediately made me book this hotel. The location is unbeatable, super convenient. It's right opposite Shinsaibashi Daimaru, and directly connected to the subway and a shopping mall underground. The hotel service was excellent; we got a free upgrade to a 3-bed room. The hotel lobby is quite elegant, but the room itself needs a bit of a critique. With three beds, it's definitely a bit cramped, although the sleeping area was spacious. The curtains were showing their age (see photo), but since we were on a high floor, the view was good. The bathroom felt a bit old, and there was an occasional sewage smell from the drain.

This truly lives up to its reputation as an established five-star hotel. It embodies all the qualities of a five-star establishment, with staff who are highly service-oriented and professional. The front desk staff are particularly professional and have good English skills. The rooms are spacious and well-equipped, and during my 6-night stay, the cleaning was impeccable every day. The location is excellent; the airport limousine bus goes directly here, and there's also a bus to Tennoji from right outside the hotel, running every 15 minutes for 120 yen. The subway is directly accessible from the hotel's basement, just two stops to Namba and five to Umeda. Right next door is Kintetsu Department Store, which connects to an annex featuring Muji and Uniqlo, among others. The basement supermarket offers very reasonable prices. Across the street, Hihi Town boasts a variety of authentic local restaurants. I would definitely stay here again.

My stay at the Royal Hotel was excellent. The highlight was the complimentary shuttle bus to Osaka city, which ran every 15 minutes and made getting around incredibly convenient. The hotel's location is also great, with a 7-Eleven and restaurants right downstairs on B1 – perfect for snacks and meals. The room was clean and comfortable, and the staff were very friendly and helpful. I will definitely choose this hotel again on my next visit to Osaka.

Zentis has become my favorite hotel in Osaka! The service is excellent, and the staff are always attentive, friendly, and ready to help with anything. Breakfasts are delicious, and the location is perfect — very convenient for exploring the city. The hotel is new, beautifully designed, and extremely comfortable — a real gem! My stay was so pleasant and memorable. I’m already looking forward to coming back!

Osaka|0.37km from city centre
The triple room was a bit cramped; there wasn't enough space to fully open our suitcases. The room rate was very reasonable on weekdays, but it doubled on weekends, making the value for money just average. The hotel is quite close to the subway station, which makes getting around very convenient. There are also 7-11 and Lawson convenience stores nearby. What was a bit odd is that on our first day, we received complimentary coffee and weren't charged a city accommodation tax. However, after returning from Universal Studios, on our third day, there was no coffee provided, and we were charged the city accommodation tax. Both nights were booked through Ctrip, so I'm unsure why there was a difference.

The hotel's location is decent, quite close to the subway station. However, be aware that the subway line going towards Umeda leads to Nishi-Umeda, which is still quite a distance from Umeda Station itself. The room was small, and the bathroom was tiny. The main issue was that the toilet faced a wall, and due to the close proximity, it was very awkward after using the facilities. They don't provide any complimentary water bottles in the room, so remember to buy your own. Also, families traveling with children should pay close attention to the age policy. If your child is over 6 years old, they won't be considered a child; they'll be charged as an adult, which adds a significant amount to the cost.

The hotel interior is a bit old but clean and the service is excellent. The noise is like white noise, understandable given its location above the station. The hotel rooms are on floors 21-27. The 27th-floor lounge is not open to all guests; there's no free lounge access. The location is super convenient with Osaka Station and Daimaru department store downstairs, plus Lucua and Eki Marche shopping centers nearby. It's perfect if you want to shop around the Umeda area. We chose it specifically for its excellent location: the Osaka Loop Line provides direct access to Kansai Airport and Universal Studios. On the first night, the soundproofing wasn't great; we could hear our neighbors coughing. After reporting it to the front desk, they immediately upgraded us to a larger room with no neighbors in front or behind, free of charge. During the room change, I left an apple and a cake in the fridge, and they even brought them over to the new room. Additionally, the front desk offers complimentary DHC skincare samples. Overall, the excellent service attitude compensated for some of the hotel's older aspects. The biggest advantage is definitely the location, and the price is reasonable.

The location is incredibly convenient, right next to Umeda and Osaka, with several smaller train stations easily accessible. There's a convenience store right downstairs, and plenty of dining options just a short walk away. Overall, the place was very clean, tidy, and a decent size. The only downside was the sheer number of izakayas on the ground floor, leading to many touts or promoters trying to solicit customers.

The hotel is in between Shinsaibashi Station and Nagahoribashi Station. The staff are polite and friendly. The room is decent size for two people, though 2 open luggages can only be done halfway open, but sti ok. There’s free hot & cold drinks at the lounge area which is open from 5am to 12mn. The buffet breakfast is nice, mostly local Japanese foods (which we like), i can say that the cereal can be considered western. 😁 There’s a family mart just 2-5mins walk. And you can also walk to Namba from the hotel. Overall, it is a good hotel choice when in Osaka.

It's a bit of a walk from the subway station. It's actually more around Nihonbashi. It's close to the Tanico store, and convenient for taking the Nankai line to the airport. I was really grateful to find a room for just over 1,000 yen a night, especially since everything was fully booked during the holidays! The front desk service was excellent. The bathroom in the room was huge—so big that I could half-unfold my suitcase in it. The hotel's location is also very convenient, with subway access to everywhere. To get to the airport, you just need to transfer once at Namba. The downside is that the cleanliness wasn't great; the sheets, duvet cover, and pillowcases all felt dirty!

This hotel is absolutely fantastic! Among the three hotels near USJ I've stayed at, this one is by far the best. 😎 When checking in, I asked the lady at the front desk for a room with a view of the park. She used a translator to tell me they didn't have any rooms with a full panoramic view, but I said it was fine. After checking in, I realized the room they gave me was probably the best view of the park available for my room type, so I'm super grateful! ❤️❤️❤️ Each guest receives a daily drink voucher, which can be redeemed for plenty of soda. There's also a chocolate fountain where you can dip marshmallows, perfect for relaxing after checking out or unwinding after a day at the park. The grand staircase at the hotel's main entrance is stunning; I took lots of photos there with my mom and baby. The room was spacious, with a large sofa and a big coffee table. My mom and I comfortably enjoyed delicious food we bought from the city. So relaxing! 😌 On each floor, there are ice makers, water dispensers, vending machines, and plenty of disposable tableware – very thoughtful! At night, after turning off the lights, I discovered a starry ceiling – I only noticed it on the second night! 🤣 The bathroom even provides a flat iron! This is the first time I've encountered a hotel offering a flat iron – ladies, go for it! The hairdryer and showerhead are also Rafa brand; the hairdryer is excellent and definitely something I'd consider buying! I didn't notice anything particularly special about the showerhead, though. I'll definitely stay here again next time I visit USJ!

The hotel was inflexible about changing rooms unless it was the same room type. However, the location is great. I'd choose to stay here again next time for several reasons. First, it's very close to Solaniwa Onsen, which is open from 11 AM to 11 PM. This is a perfect option for those with an early check-out and a late flight. Second, there are a few good restaurants nearby, located on the upper floor of the mall between the hotel and Solaniwa Onsen (see attached photos). Third, the city view from the 51st floor during breakfast or dinner is absolutely worth checking out. Fourth, you can take the subway directly to Kansai Airport without any transfers. Just pay attention to the announcements; about two stops before the airport, the train splits, so make sure you're in the correct car. The front desk also has staff who speak Chinese!

The Imperial is quite nice. It was the last few days of the Expo back then, so it was super crowded, and the price was a bit higher because of that. The view from the executive lounge was still pretty good. I don't speak Japanese or English, and it took a while to get breakfast delivered to the room. The service was still good though; you could ask the front desk to help call a taxi when you left. They even gave me a welcome gift on my first stay. When I went out, there was a doll on the bed, and when the housekeeper cleaned the room, she propped it up against the headboard for me, which was super cute ☺️. The view outside the room window was also good.

I usually don't leave reviews, especially negative ones. This is my second stay here, and I'm very disappointed. The bathtub had blood 🩸 and snot-like residue in it. It looked completely uncleaned. Choose wisely. Also, the room is quite small, even for a 20+ square meter space.

I stayed at this hotel in Osaka for 3 night and overall it was a pleasant experience. The room and facilities were good for the price, and my twin room was clean and comfortable. Check-in and check-out were smooth, and the hotel provides luggage storage before check-in, which was very convenient. The location is excellent—close to both JR, Nankai and Metro stations, with many convenience stores nearby and Don Quijote within walking distance. There’s also a pantry area and coin laundry available for guests. The hotel is currently undergoing renovation, but the work is done only during daytime hours, so it didn’t disturb my stay at night. Overall, a comfortable and convenient place to stay. Recommended!

The room was compact, as is typical for a Japanese hotel, but spotlessly clean. The location is fantastic – just a 2-minute walk to Shinsaibashi and a 5-minute walk to the subway station, making it incredibly convenient for exploring. It offers great value for money. We didn't opt for breakfast, but having a microwave available on the ground floor was extremely handy. My child and I stayed there (two people) and found it comfortable enough, not feeling cramped. The only minor inconvenience was that fully opening our 26-inch suitcase was a bit tricky due to the limited space.

Location, room size and amenities are acceptable. But the service from the counter staff is really not up to standard. She served a Caucasian couple first despite that they came after us. Secondly. My wife and my toddler were handling 3 big luggages as I was parking my car. Absolutely no help was rendered to them despite there was a hotel staff standing infront. Chose not to provide any help. My wife requested help and yet she was responded with a ”You can use the luggage trolley over there. And please return to this floor after use.” So now we have to be our own bell boy now? Paying hefy room prices for such uncompassionate service. Daughter and I stayed a total of 7 nights in Fraser Residence Nankai Osaka. It was one of our best decisions. It's location next to Namba station was excellent. From Kansai airport, we took the airport express directly to Namba station. The hotel was just a short walk away. There were plenty of stores and eateries nearby. We were greeted by friendly staff at the reception. Narikawa san was very professional and checked us in quickly. As part of their goal to be eco friendly, for every day that we did not require room service, we were given 500yen konbini vouchers. We used them to make purchases at the Family Mart just round the corner. The room was spacious with space for our 2 large luggages. We had all the amenities we needed for our stay. Comfortable beds, washer/dryer, induction cooker, cutleries etc. Check out was at 12 noon for Fraser World members. Japanese cuisine

  • Takoyaki: octopus-filled batter balls, crispy on the outside, meltingly soft on the inside. A real treat!
  • Okonomiyaki: a savoury Japanese pancake topped with cabbage, meat and a sweet sauce.
  • Kushikatsu: breaded skewers typical of Shinsekai.
  • Yakiniku: a Japanese barbecue where you grill your own food for a sociable meal
  • And of course, sushi and sashimi: to savour, for example, at Kuromon Ichiba Market, a top spot for local cuisine!

Local markets and culinary experiences not to be missed

And for food lovers, enjoy an even more immersive experience by taking part in a Japanese cooking class. You could, for example, learn to prepare sushi or okonomiyaki like a chef!
