🏙️ Must-Visit Districts in Osaka

Dotonbori and Namba

Dotonbori and Namba: the beating heart of Osaka

If there are neighbourhoods that truly embody Osaka, it’s Namba and Dotonbori! This is the perfect place to discover the city’s finest boutiques and its famous neon signs (including the iconic Glico Man sign!). Japan’s Times Square! By day or by night, this area never stops buzzing, and you’ll find shops and restaurants open at any time of day or night.

To make the most of the neighbourhood, we recommend strolling along the canal and hopping aboard a cruise on the Tombori River to admire the city from the water. Between strolls, take the time to try takoyaki (octopus balls) or okonomiyaki (savoury Japanese pancake), both local specialities prepared right before your eyes. An absolute treat!

Shinsekai and Tennoji: retro, working-class charm

Time for a change of scene—make way for the city's calm. Further south, Shinsekai immerses you in a retro atmosphere inspired by Paris and New York in the early 20th century. The neighbourhood is dominated by the Tsutenkaku Tower, a truly nostalgic emblem of the city!

Here—and you’ll notice it in no time—life moves at a laid-back pace: people play pachinko, savour kushikatsu (crispy breaded skewers), and chat in izakaya; in short, it feels like you’re visiting a little village in a big city!

Just next door, and if time permits, we recommend Spa World, which offers Japanese baths, saunas and relaxation areas — a relaxing and typically local experience!

Finally, if you’re a fan of panoramic views, head to the neighbouring Tennoji district, home to Shitennoji Temple (founded in the 6th century) as well as the famous Abeno Harukas skyscraper, the tallest in Japan with its panoramic observation deck!

Osaka Bay: leisure and entertainment

Osaka Bay

After exploring Osaka’s must-see streets and neighbourhoods, why not discover all the leisure activities in and around Osaka? Here’s our selection of the best things to do (whether you’re with family, friends, or as a couple):

●      🎢 Universal Studios Japan, one of the most visited theme parks in the world

●      🍄 Super Nintendo World! Rediscover your inner child and immerse yourself completely in the world of Mario and his friends (including Harry Potter’s castle!)

●      🐋 Kaiyukan Aquarium, one of the largest aquariums in the world, where you can, among other things, see whale sharks. Book your tickets now!

●      🎡 Tempozan Ferris Wheel, towering over the port and offering a magnificent view of the bay

Umeda: modernity and panoramic views

Another must-visit district is Umeda in the north of Osaka. It’s literally the symbol of the modern city! Between its glass towers and underground arcades, you’ll dive straight into the city of tomorrow!

To kick things off, head up to the top of the Umeda Sky Building for a 360° panorama of the city (a breathtaking view!). We also recommend going at night—the view is even more spectacular, with Osaka’s lights stretching all the way to the bay.

If the urge to shop strikes, don’t panic—shopping centres like Grand Front Osaka, LUCUA, or HEP Five (recognisable by its large red Ferris wheel perched on the roof) offer a wide choice of boutiques, designer cafés, and traditional restaurants with panoramic views.

The hotel is located in the business district, just a short walk from the subway station. I did my research beforehand, so I knew that check-in was upstairs. There are plenty of restaurant choices nearby, and some famous local ramen places have a much better ambiance than those in Shinsaibashi. The only drawback is that the room was a bit small, but it was clean and the soundproofing was decent.

Excellent location above Osaka Takashimaya, linked to Namba Station directly by lift. Getting to the hotel was abit confusing using google maps until we figured it out. Overall their location makes for ease of shopping & convenient offload the bags in the hotel room. The check in desk was very professional & the bath tub was European size (we booked twin beds). Of the 3 hotels that we booked in Osaka (&Here Namba, Universal Port Vita, Swissotel), Swissotel was the only hotel that could read & execute our consistent requests to push the twin beds together so our toddler could sleep in the middle. Thumbs up for their professionalism. There was also a pair of kid slippers laid out for our kid. There is a friendly hotel bar (free entry, subject to opening hours in afternoon) on level 9 that allows one to play retro video games like Mario & board games etc. Our kid throughly enjoyed their hotel bar games. As Swissôtel is a business hotel, there is no water pitcher in the room & no ice dispenser room. The toilet is a combined one-room facility. However, the rooms are quiet, the water pressure is great & everyone slept really well. Thanks Swissotel

The location is excellent — directly connected to Shinsaibashi subway station, opposite Parco and Daimaru, with Amerikamura just behind the hotel. Very convenient for shopping and getting around. Service was good and housekeeping was reliable. Although the hotel is older, the room was well maintained and clean, which is expected in Japan. I would stay here again mainly for the location. One small thing to note is the check-in policy, which is strictly at 3pm. When I arrived earlier (around 1pm), I was stopped before I reach the reception counter, and asked to leave my luggage first and come back later, which was a bit unexpected, but understandable given hotel policies. I did go back at 3pm and there was already a long check in queue

Hotel stay was truly sensational, especially experience with the New Year's buffet. The location proved to be so convenient for travels. Being close to the Kintetsu rail line and the metro would have made exploring the area a breeze. Hotel is conveniently located with a variety of nearby shops to explore; essential amenities like chemists, a popular variety store Daiso, and supermarkets such as Harves and Aeon within easy reach. Additionally, the accessibility of the airport shuttle bus is a significant advantage for any traveler.

My stay at the Royal Hotel was excellent. The highlight was the complimentary shuttle bus to Osaka city, which ran every 15 minutes and made getting around incredibly convenient. The hotel's location is also great, with a 7-Eleven and restaurants right downstairs on B1 – perfect for snacks and meals. The room was clean and comfortable, and the staff were very friendly and helpful. I will definitely choose this hotel again on my next visit to Osaka.

The triple room was a bit cramped; there wasn't enough space to fully open our suitcases. The room rate was very reasonable on weekdays, but it doubled on weekends, making the value for money just average. The hotel is quite close to the subway station, which makes getting around very convenient. There are also 7-11 and Lawson convenience stores nearby. What was a bit odd is that on our first day, we received complimentary coffee and weren't charged a city accommodation tax. However, after returning from Universal Studios, on our third day, there was no coffee provided, and we were charged the city accommodation tax. Both nights were booked through Ctrip, so I'm unsure why there was a difference.

The location is absolutely superb, and the staff were incredibly welcoming. Right downstairs, you'll find a 7-Eleven and a Daikoku Drugstore. The room was spotless and well-soundproofed. Nakanoshima Museum of Art and Kosetsu Museum of Art are practically on your doorstep. Major department stores in Umeda are just a 10-minute walk away. Osaka Station, the Yotsubashi and Midosuji subway lines, and Yodoyabashi Station (Keihan Electric Railway terminus) are all within easy walking distance. Overall, the convenience is simply unbeatable.

The location is absolutely fantastic! It's super convenient for shopping and getting around, perfect for families with kids who love to shop. You can't really compare it to hotels in China at the same price point, but compared to other Japanese hotels, the 25-square-meter twin room is quite spacious – big enough to open two large suitcases, and the twin beds can even be pushed together to make a king size. It's especially close to Universal Studios Japan and Kobe! And the best part is how quiet it is – we had a great night's sleep. Very satisfied! Highly recommend!

Everything about this hotel is brilliant. Although breakfast is not included, it can be purchased and is very reasonably priced. Quite close to English breakfast except no toast. There is French bread which is sweet. Plenty of fruit also. Unlimited tea, coffee and hot chocolate all day. The rooms are spotless and the whole hotel is like a new build. (Maybe it is) There is entertainment most nights in the lounge except when there is a DJ, which is not really entertainment. No mixing or dance. No lights either and no communication with the audience. (Which is very small). The hotel is above Kitahama station which is handy, if you can work out the rail and subway system. The staff are very helpful and friendly. We extended our stay three times which says a lot. You won’t be disappointed staying here.

Frankly I do expect more on the Bridge hotel. There are no hook in the bath room.. I have no where to hang my clothes. The pillow are awful.. we booked 2 rooms.. 4 beds. I even top up 28000 yen to upgrade. Was disappointed .. only 1 bed pillow was accepted. 2 pillows on a bed.. some felt like ” flat bread pillow ” some ”rock pillow” . Hotel should review the condition of the pillows. Mattress is acceptable. Breakfast is in a mess prob due to crowd.. I felt stress just having breakfast there. Chaotic is the word. The activities are well spend effort by the hotel. Overall we will not stay here again.. I was so looking forward to this hotel and was greatly disappointed.

The hotel's location is truly excellent. We chose this hotel after traveling from Kyoto to Osaka. After getting off at Osaka Station, simply follow the signs for Kitashinchi and walk in that direction. As you approach the end of the passage, you'll eventually spot Exit 43. Take the elevator up, and you'll see a drugstore. The hotel's front desk is on the 2nd floor, accessible via the alleyway to the right of the drugstore. The hotel offers amenities like ice, coffee, a microwave, and a lounge area. They also provide a generous supply of disposable toiletries. It's conveniently located within walking distance of shopping areas. Taking the underground passage is cool and only takes about 5 minutes. Walking above ground might actually be quicker, though it can get a bit hot. For directions to the Kansai Airport Limousine Bus: Exit the hotel, turn left onto the main road, and walk for two blocks. Then, cross the road and continue straight. After you see the Daimaru department store, turn left again. This will lead you to the bus stop for Kansai Airport. The ticket costs 1800 JPY. The location I mentioned is the initial boarding point for the bus.

It's a bit of a walk from the subway station. It's actually more around Nihonbashi. It's close to the Tanico store, and convenient for taking the Nankai line to the airport. I was really grateful to find a room for just over 1,000 yen a night, especially since everything was fully booked during the holidays! The front desk service was excellent. The bathroom in the room was huge—so big that I could half-unfold my suitcase in it. The hotel's location is also very convenient, with subway access to everywhere. To get to the airport, you just need to transfer once at Namba. The downside is that the cleanliness wasn't great; the sheets, duvet cover, and pillowcases all felt dirty!

I had my eye on this hotel for a long time, even recommending it to friends before I'd stayed myself. However, my actual stay was a huge disappointment. First, I booked a standard room on floors 12-23. I figured the view above the 12th floor would be pretty similar, so I didn't make any special requests. Turns out, I got a room on the 12th floor that not only faced a wall but also had a row of machines that occasionally hummed. I was too busy with my daily schedule to bother changing rooms, though. Shouldn't a flawed room like this be priced differently, or at least come with a warning? Secondly, the toilet in my room flushed by itself around 3-4 AM for two nights in a row, making the same sound as if someone was sitting on it. For a light sleeper, it was truly startling. I mentioned it to the lobby staff, asking if someone could check and adjust the automatic flushing time, and they replied that every room was the same. I don't buy that. If it's true, then the hotel's setup is seriously problematic. Those who are light sleepers or easily scared should definitely think twice before booking here. On my last night, I had to close the toilet lid, shut the bathroom door tightly, and take a sleeping pill to barely make it until morning. Then I immediately checked out and moved to another hotel. Other services like breakfast were fine. The location, of course, is its biggest advantage.

The rooms are simple and clean, offering a quiet retreat despite being in a bustling area. The location is excellent, close to Shinsaibashi and Dotonbori, making it perfect for first-time visitors to Osaka. The lounge offers complimentary drinks, and the kids absolutely loved the pancakes. The breakfast is arguably the best among hotels in its class, though you might have to queue if you go later (no need to queue before 7:30 AM). Even if there's a queue, it's usually not very long, about 10-30 minutes.

Absolutely loved this hotel! All the staff were so enthusiastic and genuinely warm. The room was the largest we had during our entire trip to Japan. While the furnishings felt a bit dated, they were exceptionally well-maintained, and there wasn't that old room smell; it was very clean. The breakfast was generally good. The hotel offers a free shuttle to Sapporo Station, the airport limousine bus stop is right outside, and there's a Lawson convenience store just across the street. This will definitely be our top choice for our next visit to Sapporo.

Location: The hotel is right by the JR station, with Universal Studios, restaurants, shopping, and commercial streets all within easy reach. Cleanliness: Both the hotel's public areas and the rooms were clean and tidy. Service: The staff were friendly and helpful. Facilities: There's a chargeable public bath on the 31st floor, but it gets very crowded. The room size was good, larger than hotels in Tokyo, and could fit two suitcases with space to spare. The buffet breakfast was busy, and while the food variety wasn't extensive, the ingredients were fresh and tasty. Perhaps because it was off-season, staying here felt like great value for money when visiting Universal Studios.

The hotel is in between Shinsaibashi Station and Nagahoribashi Station. The staff are polite and friendly. The room is decent size for two people, though 2 open luggages can only be done halfway open, but sti ok. There’s free hot & cold drinks at the lounge area which is open from 5am to 12mn. The buffet breakfast is nice, mostly local Japanese foods (which we like), i can say that the cereal can be considered western. 😁 There’s a family mart just 2-5mins walk. And you can also walk to Namba from the hotel. Overall, it is a good hotel choice when in Osaka.

Located around 5-10 minutes walk from Yodoyabashi Station, somewhat in the middle of the business district stands the Hotel Resol Trinity Osaka. Yodoyabashi station is a pretty convenient location, as it was minutes away from Osaka-Umeda Station as well as Shinsaibashi and Osaka-Namba station, which were all on the same line which made travelling around a breeze. The ambience and feel of the hotel was very inviting and comfortable. We had booked the Hollywood Twin Room, and it was quite small, but I would rather describe it as cozy, though my only grouse was that the beds were too close to each other, and the lack of space for 2 huge luggages. I do love that although a bit on the small side, they still managed to fit in a nice Japanese bath to soak away the fatigue. Besides that, there was nothing much to complain about, as the beds were comfortable and not overly hard, and the staff were pretty warm, friendly, professional and efficient. The highlight was definitely the breakfast, which had a nice variety and were pretty delicious. Overall, a fantastic choice and a definite contender when we next go back to Osaka.

The hotel is in a very convenient location next to Nankai line-Shin Imamiya station and about 130 m.walk to JR Shin Imamiya station and Midosuji line subway -Doubutsuen-mae thus you can travel to either the north or south from Osaka city very easily. On top of that there is plenty of food, cheap to local-price, near the hotel, including the Tama-de local supermarket that sells its food and goods quite cheap. Though the hotel is quite old it's undergoing renovation currently on the lower floors. Now there is WiFi for you to use inside your room. The overall service was good and staff are friendly with the exception of an incident which prompted me to write an only average review for this hotel. Paid parking is compulsory at 1500 Yen per day for the rental car. However the metal pole preventing illegal parking was not put down and ultimately damaged the rental car I was driving. To make things worse, staff told me they are not liable for the mistake when on the first day they had actually put both barriers down. Think they did the same when I return to the hotel to park again, I successfully parked my vehicle in without noticing that the barrier on the passenger side was not down and resulting in a bad scratch when I drove the car out.

I booked a double room and had to keep the window closed because of the noisy exhaust fan across the street. I called the front desk to complain, and a Japanese gentleman, who seemed to be the lobby manager, personally came to offer earplugs and arranged for us to switch rooms on the second night. This hotel is truly splendid! From the moment we arrived, a staff member guided us to the reception. Many staff speak English and are very helpful, which makes check-in smooth and comfortable for tourists. The 2nd floor has a great common area with a pool table, gym, smoking room, and plenty of tables, chairs, and sofas where you can relax or hang out. There’s also a wide range of useful items available for guests to borrow — hair curlers, nail clippers, charging cables and more. The location is unbeatable too. A convenience store is right outside the hotel, and it’s just a short walk to both Shinsaibashi and Dotonbori — perfect for shopping and food. One thing I really appreciated: the room fridge doesn’t have a freezer, and I bought ice cream. The staff kindly stored it in their freezer and gave me a tag to collect it anytime. So thoughtful! Other helpful facilities: • Luggage weighing scale on the 1st floor • Microwave, forks, spoons, and wet tissues available downstairs • Daily mineral water and towel replenishment We booked a family room and loved the convenience of having a washing machine inside — we washed and dried clothes every day! The shower and toilet are also separated, which is wonderful for families. The amenities are top-notch too — hairdryer, curler, and shower head are all from Refa. Very premium and nice to use! Location, room size and amenities are acceptable. But the service from the counter staff is really not up to standard. She served a Caucasian couple first despite that they came after us. Secondly. My wife and my toddler were handling 3 big luggages as I was parking my car. Absolutely no help was rendered to them despite there was a hotel staff standing infront. Chose not to provide any help. My wife requested help and yet she was responded with a ”You can use the luggage trolley over there. And please return to this floor after use.” So now we have to be our own bell boy now? Paying hefy room prices for such uncompassionate service. A lady with a toddler was seeking help and it was not reciprocated with a hint of kindness and empathy from the hotel staff. 2 star hotel service would be better than them!

Daughter and I stayed a total of 7 nights in Fraser Residence Nankai Osaka. It was one of our best decisions. It's location next to Namba station was excellent. From Kansai airport, we took the airport express directly to Namba station. The hotel was just a short walk away. There were plenty of stores and eateries nearby. We were greeted by friendly staff at the reception. Narikawa san was very professional and checked us in quickly. As part of their goal to be eco friendly, for every day that we did not require room service, we were given 500yen konbini vouchers. We used them to make purchases at the Family Mart just round the corner. The room was spacious with space for our 2 large luggages. We had all the amenities we needed for our stay. Comfortable beds, washer/dryer, induction cooker, cutleries etc. Check out was at 12 noon for Fraser World members. If i can give higher than 5 rating, i would do so for service. Forgot to ask for the name of the American lady (saw a USA flag pin in her uniform) at the front desk and she is so amazingly service-oriented. So with the similarly pretty superior (i guess) as she seems to be the one incharge. They told me i can be refunded with my accidental double-booking. The penalty fee was even waived. If given the chance again, we will stay in this hotel. We also love the room and all there are in it. We also love the view from our window.

How about rediscovering your inner child in Nintendo’s world? To do that, head to Universal Studios Japan, the most visited park in Japan after Tokyo Disneyland (yes, really!). Between the worlds of Harry Potter, Jurassic Park and the attractions of Super Nintendo World, it’s a must-visit for pop culture fans and anyone who loves rides, each more original than the last.

Umeda Sky Building: discover Osaka with a panoramic view

Located in the modern Umeda district, this futuristic building is one of the best places to admire Osaka from above. From its floating observatory (accessible by a panoramic lift if needed), you’ll enjoy spectacular views, especially at sunset. A perfect stop at the end of the day!

🍣 Osaka, Japan’s Culinary Capital

Japanese cuisine

What would a trip to Osaka be without trying its local specialities? Because yes, Osaka is best explored through its flavours, too. After all, it’s often called “Japan’s kitchen”! Locals even have a word for it: kuidaore, meaning “eat until you drop”.

Trip.com has curated the local classics and signature dishes you simply must try during your stay. Among them:

  • Takoyaki: octopus-filled batter balls, crispy on the outside, meltingly soft on the inside. A real treat!
  • Okonomiyaki: a savoury Japanese pancake topped with cabbage, meat and a sweet sauce.
  • Kushikatsu: breaded skewers typical of Shinsekai.
  • Yakiniku: a Japanese barbecue where you grill your own food for a sociable meal
  • And of course, sushi and sashimi: to savour, for example, at Kuromon Ichiba Market, a top spot for local cuisine!

Local markets and culinary experiences not to be missed

To savour even more of Osaka’s local specialities and live like the locals, you simply can’t miss Kuromon Ichiba Market! Amid fish stalls, grilled bites and fresh fruit, it’s Osaka’s culture in a nutshell and the perfect place to sample a variety of dishes and enjoy a sociable moment together.
And for food lovers, enjoy an even more immersive experience by taking part in a Japanese cooking class. You could, for example, learn to prepare sushi or okonomiyaki like a chef!
