🏙️ Must-Visit Districts in Osaka

Dotonbori and Namba

Dotonbori and Namba: the beating heart of Osaka

If there are neighbourhoods that truly embody Osaka, it’s Namba and Dotonbori! This is the perfect place to discover the city’s finest boutiques and its famous neon signs (including the iconic Glico Man sign!). Japan’s Times Square! By day or by night, this area never stops buzzing, and you’ll find shops and restaurants open at any time of day or night.

To make the most of the neighbourhood, we recommend strolling along the canal and hopping aboard a cruise on the Tombori River to admire the city from the water. Between strolls, take the time to try takoyaki (octopus balls) or okonomiyaki (savoury Japanese pancake), both local specialities prepared right before your eyes. An absolute treat!

Shinsekai and Tennoji: retro, working-class charm

Time for a change of scene—make way for the city's calm. Further south, Shinsekai immerses you in a retro atmosphere inspired by Paris and New York in the early 20th century. The neighbourhood is dominated by the Tsutenkaku Tower, a truly nostalgic emblem of the city!

Here—and you’ll notice it in no time—life moves at a laid-back pace: people play pachinko, savour kushikatsu (crispy breaded skewers), and chat in izakaya; in short, it feels like you’re visiting a little village in a big city!

Just next door, and if time permits, we recommend Spa World, which offers Japanese baths, saunas and relaxation areas — a relaxing and typically local experience!

Finally, if you’re a fan of panoramic views, head to the neighbouring Tennoji district, home to Shitennoji Temple (founded in the 6th century) as well as the famous Abeno Harukas skyscraper, the tallest in Japan with its panoramic observation deck!

Osaka Bay: leisure and entertainment

Osaka Bay

After exploring Osaka’s must-see streets and neighbourhoods, why not discover all the leisure activities in and around Osaka? Here’s our selection of the best things to do (whether you’re with family, friends, or as a couple):

●      🎢 Universal Studios Japan, one of the most visited theme parks in the world

●      🍄 Super Nintendo World! Rediscover your inner child and immerse yourself completely in the world of Mario and his friends (including Harry Potter’s castle!)

●      🐋 Kaiyukan Aquarium, one of the largest aquariums in the world, where you can, among other things, see whale sharks. Book your tickets now!

●      🎡 Tempozan Ferris Wheel, towering over the port and offering a magnificent view of the bay

Umeda: modernity and panoramic views

Another must-visit district is Umeda in the north of Osaka. It’s literally the symbol of the modern city! Between its glass towers and underground arcades, you’ll dive straight into the city of tomorrow!

To kick things off, head up to the top of the Umeda Sky Building for a 360° panorama of the city (a breathtaking view!). We also recommend going at night—the view is even more spectacular, with Osaka’s lights stretching all the way to the bay.

If the urge to shop strikes, don’t panic—shopping centres like Grand Front Osaka, LUCUA, or HEP Five (recognisable by its large red Ferris wheel perched on the roof) offer a wide choice of boutiques, designer cafés, and traditional restaurants with panoramic views.

Great location and in Osaka. Our room was on the larger side for Japanese hotel rooms so that was an added bonus. The bathtub had a large window with a great view of the city! The option to do laundry while traveling with a toddler was a lifeline! Certainly would recommend to families traveling with small children.

This hotel exceeded all my expectations. The atmosphere was elegant and relaxing, making it a perfect place to unwind. The rooms were spotlessly clean, beautifully designed, and very comfortable. The staff were exceptionally friendly and professional, always ready to help with a warm smile. The location is also very convenient, with easy access to transportation and nearby attractions. Overall, it was a wonderful stay and truly great value for money. I would highly recommend this hotel and would definitely return again.

What a surprise that Hotel Nikko Osaka is kind of 5 stars services to us . A welcome warmth anniversary chocolate gift box on the table when we walk into the room. The room might look tiny but not really I can tell that. They have smart design on the long couch sofa with ample space below , thus we can open up luggage and put under the couch sofa . So smart and Neat design! Overall service is 5 stars like . They have plenty of counter with fluent English speaking staffs . No worries for foreign who can't speak Japanese. Highly Recommend to purchase room with breakfast along . They have provide both Japanese style and Western mix Japanese style buffet at different level . We have tried both restaurants for the different breakfast days . Overall Experience is superb ! Last but not least , we managed to purchase way bus ticket from Hotel to Osaka Kansai Terminal Airport that limo bus services by the Hotel Nikko !!! So convenience for us once again !!!

Coming directly from Kansai Airport, the limousine bus takes you right to the hotel entrance (from bus stop #7 at Terminal 1). For first-time visitors to Osaka, and with luggage in tow, taking the airport bus was the most convenient option, and the staff even helped us with our bags. The hotel is located right above the Kintetsu line, making it incredibly easy to get to Namba, Shinsaibashi, and Umeda. There are also plenty of dining options near the hotel, and breakfast here is more on the Japanese side.

My stay at the Royal Hotel was excellent. The highlight was the complimentary shuttle bus to Osaka city, which ran every 15 minutes and made getting around incredibly convenient. The hotel's location is also great, with a 7-Eleven and restaurants right downstairs on B1 – perfect for snacks and meals. The room was clean and comfortable, and the staff were very friendly and helpful. I will definitely choose this hotel again on my next visit to Osaka.

The hotel is tucked away in a quiet spot, yet it's just a short walk to Nakanoshima Park and a straight 500-meter shot to the Umeda commercial district. The room is spacious, and the bar counter by the entrance is very practical for making coffee or tea. The bedding is incredibly comfortable. I particularly enjoyed the lounge area in the lobby; it has a fireplace in the evenings, and sitting by it to read was very peaceful. On the second floor, there's a laundry room and a gym with professional equipment. The staff are friendly and provide excellent service; their advice is always very knowledgeable. Plus, there's a free coffee machine in the lobby.

Osaka Station/Umeda/Yodoyabashi/Hommachi Osaka|0.37km from city centre
Our first stop in Japan was Osaka, and we stayed at the Keihan Hotel Yodoyabashi – it was excellent and highly recommended! From Kansai Airport, we took the Nankai Rapid Express to Namba. After exiting the station, we found the Midosuji Line and took it one stop towards Minoh to Yodoyabashi. From there, we looked for Exit 18 of the Keihan Line, went up to ground level, spotted a 7-Eleven, and the hotel was right there. This area has a lot of office buildings, so it was quite quiet. The front desk staff guided us through the self check-in process. We then picked up the disposable amenities we needed, such as toothpaste, toothbrushes, combs, facial cleanser, and lotion. They also provided a small bottle of drinking water every day. To get to our floor, we had to swipe our card in the elevator. The room, although not huge, had all the necessary facilities! It’s winter now, and the room had heating with adjustable temperature. There’s a mini-fridge, so you can buy some cold drinks. The bedding was comfortable, and I slept soundly at night! The shower and toilet are combined. The toilet is a smart one with a heated seat, so it’s not cold when you use it. There’s also a bathtub for soaking. There’s a laundry room with washing and drying machines on the first floor, but you might have to wait during peak hours. On my second day, I went for a run at Osaka Castle Park. It was quite pleasant running and enjoying the scenery. The hotel offers a luggage forwarding service. On our fourth night, we brought our suitcases to the front desk to send them to our hotel in Kyoto. The staff member helped us fill out the forms, and we just handed our luggage over to her. This made our travels much lighter the next day. We stayed here for four nights and it was very comfortable. You can take the Midosuji Line to Umeda to explore the shopping malls around Osaka Station and Umeda Station, or take it to Namba Station to visit Shinsaibashi and Dotonbori together. The hotel service was excellent, the stay was comfortable, and the cleanliness was good. It was great!

Osaka Station/Umeda/Yodoyabashi/Hommachi Osaka|0.6km from city centre
Overall, this hotel performs well and is a solid choice for business accommodation. In terms of facilities, the rooms are on the more compact side for a business hotel, and the air conditioning only offers fan speed adjustment. However, all equipment is functioning properly and meets basic usage needs. Hygiene is well-maintained, with no noticeable issues found. The surrounding area is very convenient, just a few steps from Higobashi subway station, making travel incredibly easy. Additionally, a Daikoku Drugstore is directly accessible from the hotel's ground floor, which is great for shopping. Service was satisfactory; the front desk staff were professional and courteous, always providing service with a smile and a friendly attitude. Overall, this hotel offers good value for money and is highly recommended.

The best thing about this hotel is its location. It's just a five-minute walk from the central exit of Osaka Station, which is perfect when you're traveling solo with a child. Another great perk is that the hotel allows you to store luggage overnight (I only confirmed for one night, didn't ask about multiple nights). For my trip to Tottori, I stayed here the first night, in Tottori the second night, and then back here for the third night. It was incredibly convenient to only bring a backpack to Tottori, especially with a little one! Oh, and there's a Nintendo flagship store on the 13th floor, and the hotel has signs right outside the station exit. They also gave me a discount coupon for food.

The location is great, close to a nice river, next to subway station, also there is a family mart right next to the hotel, making it very convenient to fetch some late evening snacks. However, the window in the room cannot be opened, not even tiny bit for fresh air, the air gets uncomfortable when stay longer. We asked the front desk and they told us that all windows can’t be opened in this hotel but we saw from the outside that some windows do stay open, which is a litte bit disappointing.

This hotel perfectly met my expectations for this trip. 1. Convenient transportation: It's easily accessible from Namba hub, either by a short walk or one subway stop. 2. Smooth check-in and check-out: Check-in was a breeze with friendly Chinese-speaking staff, and check-out was practically seamless with self-service. The daily cleaning was also very thorough. 3. The location is incredibly convenient, right next to Umeda and Osaka, with several smaller train stations easily accessible. There's a convenience store right downstairs, and plenty of dining options just a short walk away. Overall, the place was very clean, tidy, and a decent size. The only downside was the sheer number of izakayas on the ground floor, leading to many touts or promoters trying to solicit customers.

We stayed in a deluxe twin. It’s nice spacious room with two 4 ft beds, even have a seating area with a couch in the room. The room acoustic is great, you don’t hear much traffic at all, except for sirens and some jerks roaming their sport cars engines at night. The amenities is great, please do explore around the hotel. The hotel is about 10 minutes walk from Nipponbashi and Namba station and is tucked slightly away from the bustling Namba and yet is just a street away. Hotel staff team is very polite, good English speaking and helpful. They helped me to change restaurant reservation  as I don’t speak Japanese. Will definitely come back again.

I was really grateful to find a room for just over 1,000 yen a night, especially since everything was fully booked during the holidays! The front desk service was excellent. The bathroom in the room was huge—so big that I could half-unfold my suitcase in it. The hotel's location is also very convenient, with subway access to everywhere. To get to the airport, you just need to transfer once at Namba. The downside is that the cleanliness wasn't great; the sheets, duvet cover, and pillowcases all felt dirty!

🎐 **Hotel Location** The location is incredibly convenient! From JR Osaka Station, just look for the 3rd-floor connecting passage, and you can reach the hotel directly via a skywalk. It's connected to shopping malls like Lucua, Lucua 1100, and Grand Front Osaka. 🎐 **Malls Below the Hotel** There are two malls directly below the hotel: Yodobashi Camera and Links. These two buildings are interconnected from B1 to the 5th floor. The hotel lobby is on the 9th floor. You can take the escalator to the 8th floor of Links, which leads directly to the Harves supermarket on B1. 1. From the 9th-floor lobby, there are 4 elevators to the lower floors; 2 of them only go to floors 1, 2, and 8. 2. To catch the JR, go to the 2nd floor. On the 1st floor, right outside, there's a taxi stand, and across the street, you'll find a drugstore. 🎐 **Hotel Facilities and Services** 1. If you arrive at the hotel before check-in time, you can scan a QR code to register and store your luggage. After registering on your phone, take a screenshot and show it to the staff when you pick up your luggage. 2. Facilities are comprehensive, including toothbrushes, coffee, tea bags, and two microwaves, among others. 3. This time, I booked an accessible triple room (the difference is that the toilet and shower are open-plan, and there's no bathtub). It's spacious, the layout is the same as a deluxe triple room, but it's cheaper. The only downside is that the restroom was quite cold. 4. There are no disposable slippers, so I recommend bringing your own! Overall, it's really convenient! The location is excellent, making transportation and shopping easy. It's also close to the airport limousine bus stop. I'll definitely stay here again!

They offer 24-hour hot water, coffee, drinks, and a microwave for heating food, which is great. Free luggage storage is also available. There's a Chinese-speaking staff member at the front desk, so communication was seamless. Breakfast was decent too. The only downside, if I had to pick one, was the constant stream of tour groups. I was a bit worried when I first arrived, being a capsule hotel, about it being messy, unsafe, or noisy. Turns out I was overthinking it. The Japanese guests in the capsules are incredibly quiet; it's in their nature not to disturb others. The floors are separated by gender, which made it all the more puzzling when a Chinese woman checked into the male-exclusive floor and made calls loudly in the middle of the night – quite embarrassing, honestly. The hotel's location is fantastic; the subway entrance is right outside to the right, super convenient. Even though it's right next to the station, the noise is perfectly acceptable. Plus, this Kitahama branch is very close to both Yodoyabashi and Kitahama subway stations. The surrounding area is quiet and by the canal, unlike the noisy areas of Shinsaibashi and Namba. If you want to shop for clothes, you can just take the Midosuji Line to Umeda or Shinsaibashi. First-timers should definitely check out Xiaohongshu (Little Red Book) for tips, as the route can be a bit confusing. This hotel is very strict about their 3 PM check-in time, so even if there are empty rooms, you might not be able to check in early. The room conditions are pretty good overall, and you pick up toiletries like Sekkisei from the lobby. Convenient walking distance to and from the Sakaisuji-Honmachi Station serving the Chuo Line [C] and Sakaisuji Line [K], makes for an easy thoroughfare to all parts of the city, Umeda, and Universal Studios, too. Great amenities are its upper floor Onsen on the 14th floor, along with the swimming pool and gym facilities for an additional (2 700¥) per visit. Room size is fairly spacious for solo travelers, but opt for beds for two persons or couples. The hotel does not have laundry facilities though the nearest laundromat is about 6-blocks away. Very clean and open 24/24. This hotel has a chapel inside on the second floor for those who are observant travelers (for Christian devotees). Umeda Sky Building: discover Osaka with a panoramic view

Located in the modern Umeda district, this futuristic building is one of the best places to admire Osaka from above. From its floating observatory (accessible by a panoramic lift if needed), you’ll enjoy spectacular views, especially at sunset. A perfect stop at the end of the day!

🍣 Osaka, Japan’s Culinary Capital

Japanese cuisine

What would a trip to Osaka be without trying its local specialities? Because yes, Osaka is best explored through its flavours, too. After all, it’s often called “Japan’s kitchen”! Locals even have a word for it: kuidaore, meaning “eat until you drop”.

Trip.com has curated the local classics and signature dishes you simply must try during your stay. Among them:

  • Takoyaki: octopus-filled batter balls, crispy on the outside, meltingly soft on the inside. A real treat!
  • Okonomiyaki: a savoury Japanese pancake topped with cabbage, meat and a sweet sauce.
  • Kushikatsu: breaded skewers typical of Shinsekai.
  • Yakiniku: a Japanese barbecue where you grill your own food for a sociable meal
  • And of course, sushi and sashimi: to savour, for example, at Kuromon Ichiba Market, a top spot for local cuisine!

Local markets and culinary experiences not to be missed

To savour even more of Osaka’s local specialities and live like the locals, you simply can’t miss Kuromon Ichiba Market! Amid fish stalls, grilled bites and fresh fruit, it’s Osaka’s culture in a nutshell and the perfect place to sample a variety of dishes and enjoy a sociable moment together.
And for food lovers, enjoy an even more immersive experience by taking part in a Japanese cooking class. You could, for example, learn to prepare sushi or okonomiyaki like a chef!
