🏙️ Must-Visit Districts in Osaka

Dotonbori and Namba

Dotonbori and Namba: the beating heart of Osaka

If there are neighbourhoods that truly embody Osaka, it's Namba and Dotonbori! This is the perfect place to discover the city's finest boutiques and its famous neon signs (including the iconic Glico Man sign!). Japan's Times Square! By day or by night, this area never stops buzzing, and you'll find shops and restaurants open at any time of day or night.

To make the most of the neighbourhood, we recommend strolling along the canal and hopping aboard a cruise on the Tombori River to admire the city from the water. Between strolls, take the time to try takoyaki (octopus balls) or okonomiyaki (savoury Japanese pancake), both local specialities prepared right before your eyes. An absolute treat!

Shinsekai and Tennoji: retro, working-class charm

Time for a change of scene—make way for the city's calm. Further south, Shinsekai immerses you in a retro atmosphere inspired by Paris and New York in the early 20th century. The neighbourhood is dominated by the Tsutenkaku Tower, a truly nostalgic emblem of the city!

Here—and you'll notice it in no time—life moves at a laid-back pace: people play pachinko, savour kushikatsu (crispy breaded skewers), and chat in izakaya; in short, it feels like you're visiting a little village in a big city!

Just next door, and if time permits, we recommend Spa World, which offers Japanese baths, saunas and relaxation areas — a relaxing and typically local experience!

Finally, if you're a fan of panoramic views, head to the neighbouring Tennoji district, home to Shitennoji Temple (founded in the 6th century) as well as the famous Abeno Harukas skyscraper, the tallest in Japan with its panoramic observation deck!

Osaka Bay: leisure and entertainment

Osaka Bay

After exploring Osaka's must-see streets and neighbourhoods, why not discover all the leisure activities in and around Osaka? Here's our selection of the best things to do (whether you're with family, friends, or as a couple):

●      🎢 Universal Studios Japan, one of the most visited theme parks in the world

●      🍄 Super Nintendo World! Rediscover your inner child and immerse yourself completely in the world of Mario and his friends (including Harry Potter's castle!)

●      🐋 Kaiyukan Aquarium, one of the largest aquariums in the world, where you can, among other things, see whale sharks. Book your tickets now!

●      🎡 Tempozan Ferris Wheel, towering over the port and offering a magnificent view of the bay

Umeda: modernity and panoramic views

Another must-visit district is Umeda in the north of Osaka. It's literally the symbol of the modern city! Between its glass towers and underground arcades, you'll dive straight into the city of tomorrow!

To kick things off, head up to the top of the Umeda Sky Building for a 360° panorama of the city (a breathtaking view!). We also recommend going at night—the view is even more spectacular, with Osaka's lights stretching all the way to the bay.

If the urge to shop strikes, don't panic—shopping centres like Grand Front Osaka, LUCUA, or HEP Five (recognisable by its large red Ferris wheel perched on the roof) offer a wide choice of boutiques, designer cafés, and traditional restaurants with panoramic views.

Osaka Station/Umeda/Yodoyabashi/Hommachi Osaka|0.76km from city centre
🌟 **Stunning High-Altitude Views, Osaka's Nightscape at Your Fingertips** The biggest selling point of this hotel is undoubtedly its high-rise location! All guest rooms are situated on the 16th floor and above. We were on a high floor, and through the room's enormous windows, the entire cityscape of Osaka unfolded beneath us. At night, the traffic lights on Midosuji Avenue looked like a golden river, and the distant Umeda Sky Building and Namba's high-rises glittered with lights. This feeling of being surrounded by the entire city was truly dreamy; I couldn't stop taking photos. 🚇 **Excellent and Convenient Location** The hotel is located on Osaka's main thoroughfare, Midosuji Avenue. While in a bustling area, it offers a peaceful retreat. Transportation is incredibly convenient; it's just a 3-5 minute walk from Yodoyabashi Station (Exit 13). Whether you're heading to Shin-Osaka for the Shinkansen or going shopping in Umeda or Shinsaibashi, it's only one subway stop away, or even walkable. * **Shopper's Paradise:** Walk or take one subway stop to Shinsaibashi-suji Shopping Street and Umeda Hankyu Department Store. * **Daily Conveniences:** Downstairs, there's a convenience store (7-Eleven), a drug store, and many local ramen shops and izakayas, so late-night dining is never a problem. 🛏️ **High-Quality Accommodation Facilities** The hotel's interior design is a modern, minimalist business style, very chic. The lobby is on the 15th floor, serving as both a reception area and a sky lounge with expansive views. * **Room Amenities:** For its class in Japan, this hotel offers surprisingly spacious rooms. There's plenty of space to open up suitcases. The attention to detail is excellent; in addition to standard toiletries, they even thoughtfully provide a hair straightener/curler, which is a lifesaver for women! The bedding is soft and comfortable, and the shower pressure is strong enough to wash away a day's fatigue. * **Executive Lounge:** If your budget allows, I highly recommend booking an executive floor room. The private lounge on the top floor offers unparalleled views. The afternoon tea desserts and happy hour cocktails are of high quality. Watching the sunset here while waiting for the night view creates an incredibly atmospheric experience.

The hotel's location is super convenient, right above Takashimaya, and within walking distance of several other shopping districts – I was really pleased with that. Breakfast is served on the top floor and offers a good variety of Japanese and Western options, and the setting is beautiful. The room was clean and tidy.

Although Hotel Nikko is an older establishment, it's incredibly well-maintained. **Facilities:** Excellent! The shower, toilet, refrigerator, and kettle are all high-quality and fully equipped. **Cleanliness:** I felt completely at ease and comfortable using everything. **Location:** Situated right in the heart of Shinsaibashi, with direct access to Shinsaibashi Station from the basement, making it super convenient for exploring the area. Plus, getting to the airport is a breeze: just a leisurely stroll through the Shinsaibashi shopping street to Namba Station, then take the Nankai Express directly to Kansai Airport. Couldn't be easier! **Service:** Top-notch Japanese service. The hotel provides a comprehensive range of amenities, so you barely need to bring your own, and the brands are quite good. Breakfast offers both Japanese and Western options, both of which are delicious.

This hotel offers a truly great overall experience. The room was clean and tidy, with excellent hygiene, making for a very comfortable stay. The hotel environment is also very pleasant, with a comfortable atmosphere – not noisy at all, which allowed for a great rest. The staff were very enthusiastic, always ready to answer questions, and responded quickly. Both check-in and check-out were smooth. The breakfast had a wide variety, including a live noodle station and many local specialties, and everything tasted great. I stayed for several nights and had a very good overall experience. It's definitely worth recommending!

Highly recommend this hotel for families traveling with children to Osaka. They have a shuttle bus directly to Osaka Station, making shopping a breeze and eliminating the need to plan your transportation. There's also a shuttle to Universal Studios Japan (USJ), which you need to book in advance, just be sure to be on time. For the return trip, you'll need to make your own way back, but the subway is very convenient. I'll definitely stay here again next time I'm in Osaka. Highly, highly recommend!

Osaka Station/Umeda/Yodoyabashi/Hommachi Osaka|0.57km from city centre
Staying at Zentis Osaka was a truly unique experience, like living inside a work of art. Designer Tara Bernerd masterfully blends the subtlety of Japanese culture, the elegance of old money British style, and Nordic minimalism into every corner of the hotel. Each room has a slightly different design, embodying the hotel's 'Art-in-Residence' concept. From the calligraphy on the walls to the cups you drink from, everything is crafted by Japanese artists, while the furniture is sourced from renowned Nordic designers. Every moment of your stay is spent experiencing and utilizing art, providing a subtle, enriching nourishment for both body and soul, truly reflecting the hotel's name: Zentis. I highly recommend the hotel's breakfast. The Michelin-starred chef has curated a menu that includes Western, Japanese, and vegetarian options, along with a small self-service buffet. The hotel is situated in the most vibrant part of Umeda. Just outside, a row of understated buildings hides many famous Japanese restaurants, most of which require reservations. You'll also find McDonald's and convenience stores just around the corner. It's only a five-minute walk to Central Island Park, and during my visit, the rose garden was in full bloom, which was definitely a bonus. The service throughout my stay was impeccable. 'Make yourself at home' isn't just a slogan here; they truly live up to it.

Osaka Station/Umeda/Yodoyabashi/Hommachi Osaka|0.37km from city centre
This is a really great hotel! It's surrounded by convenience stores, restaurants, and two metro stations, yet it's surprisingly quiet, and the soundproofing is excellent. The room was very clean too. I saw online that it was renovated in 2023. We booked a triple room for our family of three, and it was a bit snug, but that's a minor point considering all the good things. We could still open our 28-inch suitcase in the hallway right outside the door. Downstairs, there are even manga comics to read – even though I can't understand Japanese, it's still a nice touch. They even have Kagura Hachi! It’s fantastic. I'll definitely choose this hotel again next time I'm in Osaka.

The hotel is super close to the subway station, right at the exit. The room was generally clean, and both comfort and quietness were good. It's a bit of a walk from the JR station, about 15 minutes. Breakfast was quite expensive, so I didn't eat at the hotel; there's a Matsuya across the street which was a good alternative.

Umeda Osaka|1.03km from city centre
This is my second time staying at this hotel in Umeda, and check-in was very smooth. The lobby is on the 19th floor, and all the guest rooms are above the 21st floor. Floors 13-16 have dining options at the LUCA department store, which is also a good choice. The hotel offers great views; you can see mountains in the distance, though the window was a bit blurry on a rainy day. Daimaru department store is right on the 1st floor. Umeda has four train stations, and you can take the Midosuji Line (M line) four stops to Shinsaibashi or Namba for 240 yen – great for shopping and dining. On my last day, the HARUKA train took about an hour to the airport. Overall, it's incredibly convenient.

I chose the Royal Park Hotel at Osaka Kitahama Station again this time. The room was spacious and clean. You can find amenities like shower caps, toothbrushes, razors, face masks, and loofahs at the self-service machine next to the check-in counter on the 2nd floor. The hotel is conveniently located within 100 meters of the Subway K Line, Hankyu KH Line, and Keihan Main Line HK. The Subway M Line is also within 700 meters. There are banks and office buildings nearby, and a 7-Eleven on the ground floor. It's very quiet at night, and during lunchtime, you can see many office workers buying lunch at 7-Eleven.

Osaka Station/Umeda/Yodoyabashi/Hommachi Osaka|0.52km from city centre
Traveling in Japan with kids, I was originally looking for a hotel with convenient transportation. While this one is close to a subway exit, it takes a good 10-15 minute walk underground to actually reach the station platform. The hotel entrance is tucked away in a small alley, easy to miss if you're not paying attention – you have to walk down the small lane right under the big Ryukakusan sign. On the upside, the surrounding area is packed with amazing food, all sorts of delicious options, and there's a huge supermarket under the five major department stores. The 'late-night diner' noodle shop across the street opens at 10 PM, which is great for those returning late. As expected, the room wasn't very big; the triple room seemed to be a standard twin room with an extra bed squeezed in, making it quite cramped. We could barely open one suitcase. A unique feature of the hotel is the hot spring on the 3rd floor. Lots of people were going up and down to use it every day, but since we were out early and back late, we didn't get to experience it.

Shinsaibashi/Namba/Yotsubashi Osaka|3.53km from city centre
This hotel has a sustainability concept, means no water bottles or change bedsheets daily. My family is lucky to stay at the 5th floor where there’s easy access to washing machine and water dispenser. The cleanliness of the bedroom: the bed a bit dusty, making my legs itchy. Toilet is small typical Japanese bathrooms. Luggage delivery wise, u need to scan a qrcode and do it ourselves and later pass to the front desk before 10am. Staff service is professional, speak short and sweet. Location wise is quite convenient. Walking distance to kuromon market and 10min walk to shinsaibashi from namba. From namba station to hotel, there’s a long walk so families with old members need to find a cab. Easy to get a cab or uber since hotel is located roadside. For a 4-star hotel with expensive room price, there’s many “self-service” and hygiene issues I don’t think is worth it.

I was really grateful to find a room for just over 1,000 yen a night, especially since everything was fully booked during the holidays! The front desk service was excellent. The bathroom in the room was huge—so big that I could half-unfold my suitcase in it. The hotel's location is also very convenient, with subway access to everywhere. To get to the airport, you just need to transfer once at Namba. The downside is that the cleanliness wasn't great; the sheets, duvet cover, and pillowcases all felt dirty!

Due to my itinerary, this was my second stay during this trip. The staff were extremely friendly, and their English was quite good. Overall, I would still recommend this hotel to others because the location is incredibly convenient and the price is very reasonable.

One of the best hotel we stayed in Osaka. It's a great location to explore and if you are lucky you can spot some cool cars or motorcycle around the area. Especially near the American mura at night. We love to walk around and explore and came across the Liberty Walk Osaka. We took the ' Darth Vader' looking train from Kansai airport at the Nankai line. We spotted the Dainese shop from the train and went to check it out. They have some Valentino Rossi official merchandise. It's just below the Keihan hotel. Can't remember most of the road name but we were just walking about using Google map trying to check out the Osaka Loop where if ur lucky you could spot some cool cars and motorcycles.

The hotel is a 10-minute walk from the subway station and consists of two buildings: the main building and an annex. The rooms aren't huge, but they're a good size for hotels in the same price range. They offer 24-hour hot water, coffee, drinks, and a microwave for heating food, which is great. Free luggage storage is also available. There's a Chinese-speaking staff member at the front desk, so communication was seamless. Breakfast was decent too. The only downside, if I had to pick one, was the constant stream of tour groups. Right next to Shin-Imamiya subway station, so getting around is incredibly convenient. The front desk staff rotate, with two people on duty at a time, including locals, Chinese, Koreans, and Indians. There's a women's shower on the 4th floor, men's showers on the 6th, and a men's bathhouse and microwave on the 10th. Downstairs, there are convenience stores, pharmacies, and places to eat nearby. The room was super small, but quite clean, and they provided towels and plastic slippers. Because it's close to the train tracks, there's a bit of noise. Plus, there's some noise from motorbikes speeding by. I stayed for 3 days, and there was hardly any noise from other guests.

Location was impeccable, just diagonally opposite Namba and the Nankai line that leads to Kansai airport. Lotsa food in the vicinity of the hotel. The room looked new, were clean, quiet and relatively spacious for up to 2 people. By relatively spacious, I could leave open a suitcase on the couch at the foot of the bed without having too much issues moving about. The toilet was the standard Japanese style inbuilt capsule with the auto-washing WCs and nice-smelling shower gel, shampoo n conditioner. Convenient walking distance to and from the Sakaisuji-Honmachi Station serving the Chuo Line [C] and Sakaisuji Line [K], makes for an easy thoroughfare to all parts of the city, Umeda, and Universal Studios, too. Great amenities are its upper floor Onsen on the 14th floor, along with the swimming pool and gym facilities for an additional (2 700¥) per visit. Room size is fairly spacious for solo travelers, but opt for beds for two persons or couples. The hotel does not have laundry facilities though the nearest laundromat is about 6-blocks away. Very clean and open 24/24. This hotel has a chapel inside on the second floor for those who are observant travelers (for Christian devotees). Osaka Station/Umeda/Yodoyabashi/Hommachi Osaka|1.78km from city centre
The Imperial Hotel Osaka boasts an excellent location near Sakuranomiya Station, offering stunning river views from its upper floors and even a glimpse of Osaka Castle in the distance. Below, the riverside greenery and small beach create a serene and lovely atmosphere. The hotel has a vintage charm, and while some facilities show their age, it didn't detract from a comfortable stay. The mattress was just right – not too soft, not too firm – and even the single beds were spacious. Room insulation was good, and the shower had strong, hot water, which was very pleasant. However, the lighting was a bit dim, making it slightly inconvenient for getting ready. This visit was specifically to experience the 'Miyake' (a term for the three most prestigious hotels in Japan) level of service, and indeed, this venerable hotel delivered polite and thoughtful service without feeling overbearing. For instance, when checking out, knowing we had plenty of time before our flight and planned to explore Umeda further, they proactively reminded us about their shuttle service to the airport if we were heading there directly. When we said we were going to Umeda, they even asked if we'd like to leave our luggage at the hotel. They also directly helped us with calling a taxi, specifying the destination, and handling our luggage. I truly loved their Japanese staff! However, it seems the hotel has hired some South Asian staff for housekeeping. I noticed some dust on the glass shelf in the bathroom and on the TV cabinet. But these are minor issues, and overall, the cleaning was quite thorough.

What would a trip to Osaka be without trying its local specialities? Because yes, Osaka is best explored through its flavours, too. After all, it's often called “Japan's kitchen”! Locals even have a word for it: kuidaore, meaning “eat until you drop”.

Trip.com has curated the local classics and signature dishes you simply must try during your stay. Among them:

  • Takoyaki: octopus-filled batter balls, crispy on the outside, meltingly soft on the inside. A real treat!
  • Okonomiyaki: a savoury Japanese pancake topped with cabbage, meat and a sweet sauce.
  • Kushikatsu: breaded skewers typical of Shinsekai.
  • Yakiniku: a Japanese barbecue where you grill your own food for a sociable meal
  • And of course, sushi and sashimi: to savour, for example, at Kuromon Ichiba Market, a top spot for local cuisine!

Local markets and culinary experiences not to be missed

To savour even more of Osaka's local specialities and live like the locals, you simply can't miss Kuromon Ichiba Market! Amid fish stalls, grilled bites and fresh fruit, it's Osaka's culture in a nutshell and the perfect place to sample a variety of dishes and enjoy a sociable moment together.
And for food lovers, enjoy an even more immersive experience by taking part in a Japanese cooking class. You could, for example, learn to prepare sushi or okonomiyaki like a chef!
