🏙️ Must-Visit Districts in Osaka

Dotonbori and Namba

Dotonbori and Namba: the beating heart of Osaka

If there are neighbourhoods that truly embody Osaka, it’s Namba and Dotonbori! This is the perfect place to discover the city’s finest boutiques and its famous neon signs (including the iconic Glico Man sign!). Japan’s Times Square! By day or by night, this area never stops buzzing, and you’ll find shops and restaurants open at any time of day or night.

To make the most of the neighbourhood, we recommend strolling along the canal and hopping aboard a cruise on the Tombori River to admire the city from the water. Between strolls, take the time to try takoyaki (octopus balls) or okonomiyaki (savoury Japanese pancake), both local specialities prepared right before your eyes. An absolute treat!

Shinsekai and Tennoji: retro, working-class charm

Time for a change of scene—make way for the city's calm. Further south, Shinsekai immerses you in a retro atmosphere inspired by Paris and New York in the early 20th century. The neighbourhood is dominated by the Tsutenkaku Tower, a truly nostalgic emblem of the city!

Here—and you’ll notice it in no time—life moves at a laid-back pace: people play pachinko, savour kushikatsu (crispy breaded skewers), and chat in izakaya; in short, it feels like you’re visiting a little village in a big city!

Just next door, and if time permits, we recommend Spa World, which offers Japanese baths, saunas and relaxation areas — a relaxing and typically local experience!

Finally, if you’re a fan of panoramic views, head to the neighbouring Tennoji district, home to Shitennoji Temple (founded in the 6th century) as well as the famous Abeno Harukas skyscraper, the tallest in Japan with its panoramic observation deck!

Osaka Bay: leisure and entertainment

Osaka Bay

After exploring Osaka’s must-see streets and neighbourhoods, why not discover all the leisure activities in and around Osaka? Here’s our selection of the best things to do (whether you’re with family, friends, or as a couple):

●      🎢 Universal Studios Japan, one of the most visited theme parks in the world

●      🍄 Super Nintendo World! Rediscover your inner child and immerse yourself completely in the world of Mario and his friends (including Harry Potter’s castle!)

●      🐋 Kaiyukan Aquarium, one of the largest aquariums in the world, where you can, among other things, see whale sharks. Book your tickets now!

●      🎡 Tempozan Ferris Wheel, towering over the port and offering a magnificent view of the bay

Umeda: modernity and panoramic views

Another must-visit district is Umeda in the north of Osaka. It’s literally the symbol of the modern city! Between its glass towers and underground arcades, you’ll dive straight into the city of tomorrow!

To kick things off, head up to the top of the Umeda Sky Building for a 360° panorama of the city (a breathtaking view!). We also recommend going at night—the view is even more spectacular, with Osaka’s lights stretching all the way to the bay.

If the urge to shop strikes, don’t panic—shopping centres like Grand Front Osaka, LUCUA, or HEP Five (recognisable by its large red Ferris wheel perched on the roof) offer a wide choice of boutiques, designer cafés, and traditional restaurants with panoramic views.

Osaka Station/Umeda/Yodoyabashi/Hommachi Osaka|0.76km from city centre
This hotel is located in Yodoyabashi, just one subway stop away from Umeda, making it incredibly convenient. The hotel facilities are excellent. The lobby on the 15th floor offers expansive views, almost like a sky garden. The room itself is a bit small, and there isn't enough space to fully open a suitcase.

The room was spotless, spacious and thoughtfully designed, with a beautiful city view that made every morning feel special. The location is unbeatable, sitting right above Shinsaibashi Station which makes travelling around Osaka simple and convenient. Shopping, food and major attractions are all within walking distance. Breakfast was excellent with a wide variety of high-quality dishes that catered to different preferences. Everything was fresh, well presented and enjoyable. Coming directly from Kansai Airport, the limousine bus takes you right to the hotel entrance (from bus stop #7 at Terminal 1). For first-time visitors to Osaka, and with luggage in tow, taking the airport bus was the most convenient option, and the staff even helped us with our bags. The hotel is located right above the Kintetsu line, making it incredibly easy to get to Namba, Shinsaibashi, and Umeda. There are also plenty of dining options near the hotel, and breakfast here is more on the Japanese side.

My stay at the Royal Hotel was excellent. The highlight was the complimentary shuttle bus to Osaka city, which ran every 15 minutes and made getting around incredibly convenient. The hotel's location is also great, with a 7-Eleven and restaurants right downstairs on B1 – perfect for snacks and meals. The room was clean and comfortable, and the staff were very friendly and helpful. I will definitely choose this hotel again on my next visit to Osaka.

The hotel is tucked away in a quiet spot, yet it's just a short walk to Nakanoshima Park and a straight 500-meter shot to the Umeda commercial district. The room is spacious, and the bar counter by the entrance is very practical for making coffee or tea. The bedding is incredibly comfortable. I particularly enjoyed the lounge area in the lobby; it has a fireplace in the evenings, and sitting by it to read was very peaceful. On the second floor, there's a laundry room and a gym with professional equipment. The staff are friendly and provide excellent service; their advice is always very knowledgeable. Plus, there's a free coffee machine in the lobby.

Osaka Station/Umeda/Yodoyabashi/Hommachi Osaka|0.37km from city centre
Our first stop in Japan was Osaka, and we stayed at the Keihan Hotel Yodoyabashi – it was excellent and highly recommended! From Kansai Airport, we took the Nankai Rapid Express to Namba. After exiting the station, we found the Midosuji Line and took it one stop towards Minoh to Yodoyabashi. From there, we looked for Exit 18 of the Keihan Line, went up to ground level, spotted a 7-Eleven, and the hotel was right there. This area has a lot of office buildings, so it was quite quiet. The front desk staff guided us through the self check-in process. We then picked up the disposable amenities we needed, such as toothpaste, toothbrushes, combs, facial cleanser, and lotion. They also provided a small bottle of drinking water every day. To get to our floor, we had to swipe our card in the elevator. The room, although not huge, had all the necessary facilities! It’s winter now, and the room had heating with adjustable temperature. There’s a mini-fridge, so you can buy some cold drinks. The bedding was comfortable, and I slept soundly at night! The shower and toilet are combined. The toilet is a smart one with a heated seat, so it’s not cold when you use it. There’s also a bathtub for soaking. There’s a laundry room with washing and drying machines on the first floor, but you might have to wait during peak hours. On my second day, I went for a run at Osaka Castle Park. It was quite pleasant running and enjoying the scenery. The hotel offers a luggage forwarding service. On our fourth night, we brought our suitcases to the front desk to send them to our hotel in Kyoto. The staff member helped us fill out the forms, and we just handed our luggage over to her. This made our travels much lighter the next day. We stayed here for four nights and it was very comfortable. You can take the Midosuji Line to Umeda to explore the shopping malls around Osaka Station and Umeda Station, or take it to Namba Station to visit Shinsaibashi and Dotonbori together. The hotel service was excellent, the stay was comfortable, and the cleanliness was good. It was great!

This is a great hotel. Check-in, getting around, and check-out are all very convenient. The hotel has excellent facilities, consistently good as always. Downstairs, there's a buffet and a duty-free drugstore, and there are all sorts of restaurants nearby. It's about a 15-minute walk to Umeda and the airport bus stop. Superb!

Re-stayed this hotel after visiting Kyoto and Arima. Very convenient and lastly realised there is a 15% discount coupon voucher for 85 restaurants nearby together with the room card in the envelope. Remember to bring along the voucher when you dine in nearby. We tried the restaurant called IGNITE cafe and dining before leaving Osaka. It is undoubtedly a shopping heaven in Japan. There is a newly opened shopping area namely Grand Green Osaka you can visit and go shopping. Daimaru department store is just downstairs from the hotel.

The location is great, close to a nice river, next to subway station, also there is a family mart right next to the hotel, making it very convenient to fetch some late evening snacks. However, the window in the room cannot be opened, not even tiny bit for fresh air, the air gets uncomfortable when stay longer. We asked the front desk and they told us that all windows can’t be opened in this hotel but we saw from the outside that some windows do stay open, which is a litte bit disappointing.

This hotel perfectly met my expectations for this trip. 1. Convenient transportation: It's easily accessible from Namba hub, either by a short walk or one subway stop. 2. Smooth check-in and check-out: Check-in was a breeze with friendly Chinese-speaking staff, and check-out was practically seamless with self-service. The daily cleaning was also very thorough. 3. The ramen at 8:30 PM was a fantastic bonus. It was the perfect replenishment after a long day of exploring – absolutely amazing! See you next trip!

Osaka Station/Umeda/Yodoyabashi/Hommachi Osaka|0.52km from city centre
The hotel's location is truly excellent. We chose this hotel after traveling from Kyoto to Osaka. After getting off at Osaka Station, simply follow the signs for Kitashinchi and walk in that direction. As you approach the end of the passage, you'll eventually spot Exit 43. Take the elevator up, and you'll see a drugstore. The hotel's front desk is on the 2nd floor, accessible via the alleyway to the right of the drugstore. The hotel offers amenities like ice, coffee, a microwave, and a lounge area. They also provide a generous supply of disposable toiletries. It's conveniently located within walking distance of shopping areas. Taking the underground passage is cool and only takes about 5 minutes. Walking above ground might actually be quicker, though it can get a bit hot. For directions to the Kansai Airport Limousine Bus: Exit the hotel, turn left onto the main road, and walk for two blocks. Then, cross the road and continue straight. After you see the Daimaru department store, turn left again. This will lead you to the bus stop for Kansai Airport. The ticket costs 1800 JPY. The location I mentioned is the initial boarding point for the bus.

We stayed in a deluxe twin. It’s nice spacious room with two 4 ft beds, even have a seating area with a couch in the room. The room acoustic is great, you don’t hear much traffic at all, except for sirens and some jerks roaming their sport cars engines at night. The amenities is great, please do explore around the hotel. The hotel is about 10 minutes walk from Nipponbashi and Namba station and is tucked slightly away from the bustling Namba and yet is just a street away. Hotel staff team is very polite, good English speaking and helpful. They helped me to change restaurant reservation  as I don’t speak Japanese. Will definitely come back again.

I was really grateful to find a room for just over 1,000 yen a night, especially since everything was fully booked during the holidays! The front desk service was excellent. The bathroom in the room was huge—so big that I could half-unfold my suitcase in it. The hotel's location is also very convenient, with subway access to everywhere. To get to the airport, you just need to transfer once at Namba. The downside is that the cleanliness wasn't great; the sheets, duvet cover, and pillowcases all felt dirty!

🎐 **Hotel Location** The location is incredibly convenient! From JR Osaka Station, just look for the 3rd-floor connecting passage, and you can reach the hotel directly via a skywalk. It's connected to shopping malls like Lucua, Lucua 1100, and Grand Front Osaka. 🎐 **Malls Below the Hotel** There are two malls directly below the hotel: Yodobashi Camera and Links. These two buildings are interconnected from B1 to the 5th floor. The hotel lobby is on the 9th floor. You can take the escalator to the 8th floor of Links, which leads directly to the Harves supermarket on B1. 1. From the 9th-floor lobby, there are 4 elevators to the lower floors; 2 of them only go to floors 1, 2, and 8. 2. To catch the JR, go to the 2nd floor. On the 1st floor, right outside, there's a taxi stand, and across the street, you'll find a drugstore. 🎐 **Hotel Facilities and Services** 1. If you arrive at the hotel before check-in time, you can scan a QR code to register and store your luggage. After registering on your phone, take a screenshot and show it to the staff when you pick up your luggage. 2. Facilities are comprehensive, including toothbrushes, coffee, tea bags, and two microwaves, among others. 3. This time, I booked an accessible triple room (the difference is that the toilet and shower are open-plan, and there's no bathtub). It's spacious, the layout is the same as a deluxe triple room, but it's cheaper. The only downside is that the restroom was quite cold. 4. There are no disposable slippers, so I recommend bringing your own! Overall, it's really convenient! The location is excellent, making transportation and shopping easy. It's also close to the airport limousine bus stop. I'll definitely stay here again!

The rooms are simple and clean, offering a quiet retreat despite being in a bustling area. The location is excellent, close to Shinsaibashi and Dotonbori, making it perfect for first-time visitors to Osaka. The lounge offers complimentary drinks, and the kids absolutely loved the pancakes. The breakfast is arguably the best among hotels in its class, though you might have to queue if you go later (no need to queue before 7:30 AM). Absolutely loved this hotel! All the staff were so enthusiastic and genuinely warm. The room was the largest we had during our entire trip to Japan. While the furnishings felt a bit dated, they were exceptionally well-maintained, and there wasn't that old room smell; it was very clean. The breakfast was generally good. I was a bit worried when I first arrived, being a capsule hotel, about it being messy, unsafe, or noisy. Turns out I was overthinking it. The Japanese guests in the capsules are incredibly quiet; it's in their nature not to disturb others. The floors are separated by gender, which made it all the more puzzling when a Chinese woman checked into the male-exclusive floor and made calls loudly in the middle of the night – quite embarrassing, honestly. The hotel's location is fantastic; the subway entrance is right outside to the right, super convenient. Even though it's right next to the station, the noise is perfectly acceptable. Plus, there's a public bath on the hotel's rooftop, which is a great value for money.

The rooms are well-equipped and very clean. Every time I go shopping in Osaka, I pretty much stay at this place. Plus, this Kitahama branch is very close to both Yodoyabashi and Kitahama subway stations. The surrounding area is quiet and by the canal, unlike the noisy areas of Shinsaibashi and Namba. If you want to shop for clothes, you can just take the Midosuji Line to Umeda or Shinsaibashi. And if you're looking for anime merchandise, you can take the Sakaisuji Line from Kitahama Station to Nihonbashi or Ebisucho. First-timers should definitely check out Xiaohongshu (Little Red Book) for tips, as the route can be a bit confusing. This hotel is very strict about their 3 PM check-in time, so even if there are empty rooms, you might not be able to check in early. The room conditions are pretty good overall, and you pick up toiletries like Sekkisei from the lobby. The public bath isn't very big, with only one indoor option, but there are free massage chairs available. 🍣 Osaka, Japan’s Culinary Capital

Japanese cuisine

What would a trip to Osaka be without trying its local specialities? Because yes, Osaka is best explored through its flavours, too. After all, it’s often called “Japan’s kitchen”! Locals even have a word for it: kuidaore, meaning “eat until you drop”.

Trip.com has curated the local classics and signature dishes you simply must try during your stay. Among them:

  • Takoyaki: octopus-filled batter balls, crispy on the outside, meltingly soft on the inside. A real treat!
  • Okonomiyaki: a savoury Japanese pancake topped with cabbage, meat and a sweet sauce.
  • Kushikatsu: breaded skewers typical of Shinsekai.
  • Yakiniku: a Japanese barbecue where you grill your own food for a sociable meal
  • And of course, sushi and sashimi: to savour, for example, at Kuromon Ichiba Market, a top spot for local cuisine!

Local markets and culinary experiences not to be missed

To savour even more of Osaka’s local specialities and live like the locals, you simply can’t miss Kuromon Ichiba Market! Amid fish stalls, grilled bites and fresh fruit, it’s Osaka’s culture in a nutshell and the perfect place to sample a variety of dishes and enjoy a sociable moment together.
And for food lovers, enjoy an even more immersive experience by taking part in a Japanese cooking class. You could, for example, learn to prepare sushi or okonomiyaki like a chef!
