Renyi Inn
9.7 (1,000 reviews)

Renyi Inn ★★★

📍 No. 56, Zone C, Panjiayuan, Qingyuan Street, Pingcheng District, Datong

"Stepping into Datong Ancient City in the afternoon, the first pleasant surprise was stumbling upon Renyi Inn. The inn's antique courtyard, adorned with carved beams and painted rafters, and warm red lanterns, instantly brought a sense of calm. The family who runs the inn is incredibly humble and kind, their conversations warm and thoughtful, making you feel right at home. What's even more admirable is their exceptional care for animals; the inn is like a mini-zoo. They treat every little creature with gentleness and patience, which in turn fills the entire courtyard with life and spirit. Upon entering, a majestic grey parrot, both poised and lively, greeted me from the front desk – I'd never seen such a large pet parrot before! Two smaller parrots chirped happily nearby, completely unafraid of strangers, lively and adorable. Outside my room was a small courtyard with two tea tables. After a 'special forces'-style day of temple hopping, when I was tired to the point of tears, sitting there enjoying a cup of tea was incredibly relaxing. In the adjacent fish pond, a dozen or so vibrant koi, each weighing at least two to three pounds, swam gracefully, their bodies stretching elegantly. Next to the pond, a large and a small tortoise slowly ambled, quiet and therapeutic. In a corner cage, a tiny grey squirrel darted around, agile and playful. As dusk fell, watching the lights reflect on the pond and listening to the soft sounds of the small animals, the weariness of travel seemed to melt away in this gentle atmosphere, leaving my heart filled with peace and healing. I thought this wonderful experience was complete, but to my surprise, a new delight awaited me the next morning – two peacocks, 'Wenqing' (blue and white) and 'Xiaofeng' (emerald green), strolled leisurely in the courtyard with their magnificent tails fanned out – yes, they even have names! The eye-spots on their tail feathers shimmered, as if they were wearing the entire starry sky, beautiful like something straight out of an ancient painting. For a moment, I couldn't tell if I was in an inn or a secret wonderland. Renyi Inn is far more than just a place to stay; it's a hidden gem within the ancient city. The harmonious coexistence of people and animals creates a warm and healing atmosphere, adding countless gentle and delightful moments to this journey."

"The hotel decor is luxurious and the room facilities are excellent. The soundproofing could be better, but it's acceptable. The main issue is the chaotic breakfast. No matter what time you go, there are no seats available, so you have to wait nearby. Every chef preparing food has a terrible attitude. Even if you're polite, they won't speak to you nicely. If you ask for a pancake, they'll act annoyed and tell you to wait, as they're making small crepes. They made a whole plate of small crepes. When I asked if they could make a pancake, they didn't even look up and just said no, still pouring batter to make more small crepes, even though no one was taking them. The noodle and shaved noodle chefs were the same. If something ran out and you asked for a refill, they'd just say, 'Wait.' Despite the seemingly large restaurant, there aren't many edible options. The lamb offal soup with noodles and pancakes tasted good, but you'll have to queue for fried eggs. Both days, I witnessed guests arguing with staff. If I hadn't been traveling with my child, I wouldn't have let them get away with it; it's truly outrageous. Paying 1,400 for a hotel doesn't require amazing service, but couldn't they at least be polite? Also, there are no delivery robots in the hotel. If you order takeout, you have to go down to the entrance of Yungang to pick it up yourself. Apart from the decor, it really doesn't feel like a five-star hotel at all. There are no supermarkets nearby either; you have to walk a long way to buy anything. For those looking for a good hotel, be cautious. If you don't eat breakfast and don't order takeout, it might be an option, otherwise, it's really inconvenient and you'll end up frustrated!"

"Staying at Ruifeng Tower was definitely the best decision for our Datong trip! The hotel is located right in the heart of the ancient city, within walking distance of attractions like Huayan Temple and Shanhua Temple, making it super convenient. The rooms have an antique charm, and when you open the window, you're greeted with the sight of traditional courtyards and intricate eaves. What truly delighted me were the books in the room. Reading them before bed, the glory of Pingcheng during the Northern Wei Dynasty and the prosperity of the Liao and Jin secondary capitals came alive on the pages, adding a wonderful cultural depth to our journey. The breakfast buffet was abundant, and the staff were warm and professional. Next time I'm in Datong, I'll definitely choose Ruifeng Tower again, to immerse myself in the unique charm of this ancient capital amidst its scholarly ambiance and historic beauty!"

Datong Hotel

"Datong Hotel is located south of Datong Ancient City. It's about a 30-minute walk to the ancient city, so a shared bike would be more convenient. The hotel has two buildings; the Welcome Building has older facilities, while the VIP Building is better. The breakfast spread is very rich, offering many local Datong delicacies. The lamb offal noodle soup, in particular, is very authentic and just as good as what you'd find outside."

Huayi Select Hotel by Home Inn (Datong Yungang District Wuyue Plaza) Hotels in Datong

Huayi Select Hotel by Home Inn (Datong Yungang District Wuyue Plaza)

"The room facilities were terrible! There wasn't even an internal phone line; I had to call a virtual number on Ctrip to contact the front desk – this is the first time I've ever encountered this. It was advertised as a suite, but the outer room didn't even have a single power outlet, not even a place to charge my phone. It's unbelievable! The toilet was wobbly, and the sealant on the base was even peeling off – they hadn't even fixed it properly. The sofa, mahjong machine, and even the bed, mattress, and cabinets looked like they were secondhand items; there was a strong, pungent smell. Judging from the environment, it was probably a converted conference room or something, and they called it a "luxury business suite" – what a joke! The breakfast selection was extremely limited and the food was awful. If it weren't for the peak season during Chinese New Year, I definitely wouldn't have stayed here. Honestly, it damages the image of Home Inn! A truly terrible experience!"

"We booked this hotel for the bath but the bath was too dirty and we couldn't use it. There was no fridge. The shower was also very dirty. Overall everything looked very old and used.the sofa was also too dirty, impossible to sit on it. The carpet was also dirty. We took a non-smoking room but it smelled cigarette in the bathroom. I think this hotel has a huge potential but it needs to be renovated. The bed sheets were clean but it doesn't value the price paid for the room. There was a large variety of options for the breakfast but nothing outstanding."

"The room was comfortable and the surroundings were beautiful. The only downside was that the hallways and outdoor areas were too hot when the weather was warm. Breakfast offered a great variety and tasted delicious, and the staff were particularly enthusiastic and welcoming. The front desk service was generally standard, with a few more experienced staff members being quite proactive in assisting guests."

"The guesthouse is located in the pedestrian street of Southeast Yi, a quiet place in the bustling city. The interior design is a wabi-sabi style courtyard. All the staff are warm and helpful. The four rooms in the east, west, south, and north offer views of the central garden. There are also private hot springs and in-room massage services. After sightseeing, you can relax in your room with tea. It's a very pleasant stay."

"This hotel is truly excellent, and the staff are incredibly warm and attentive! As soon as you enter the lobby, the front desk staff greet you, and they're patient in answering any questions. The self-service tea bar, coffee, and snacks are all great too. The rooms are spacious, very clean, and even come with an AI assistant (Xiao Ai Tong Xue), which is super convenient. The breakfast spread is also extensive, with plenty of hot and cold dishes, main courses, and fruits! Seriously, I'm not exaggerating – I genuinely recommend this place for anyone visiting Datong! 👍🏻"

Shangdu Hotel Hotels in Datong

Shangdu Hotel

"This hotel offers massage and bathing facilities. The rooms are spacious, and the bedding is quite comfortable. We were a large group, so we booked three rooms. In one room, the duvet cover felt a bit damp, probably due to the weather and not being dried thoroughly. We reported it, and they promptly replaced it. I particularly want to recommend the massages in the massage area; the technique was excellent, and the price was very reasonable. It was perfect for unwinding after a day of city walking. The only slight drawback is that the restaurant is shared with the adjacent eLong hotel, and the food there wasn't quite up to par."

"The hotel is indeed new and technologically advanced, but I found it a bit far from the main tourist attractions; it looks closer on the map. I had difficulties checking in because no one at reception spoke English, and I didn't like that they put me in a room in the basement, without a nice view from the window."

"The hotel staff were incredibly accommodating. They upgraded us to a family room, and the breakfast spread was fantastic, offering a great mix of local Shanxi specialties and Western options. We wanted to extend our stay in the same room, but it wasn't available. However, the lobby staff went above and beyond to arrange a king-size room for us. While it was a bit pricier, it felt completely worth it. The TV was a little small, but the rewind function was a great bonus, allowing us to catch up on shows."

"As a family with children, this stay was fantastic! The room was spacious and clean, and they even thoughtfully provided slippers and toothbrushes for kids. The hotel has its own playground and swimming pool, and the kids didn't want to leave. The buffet breakfast had a dedicated children's area, offering nutritious and healthy options. The biggest surprise was that the staff upgraded our room and gave us a welcome gift. The location is also very convenient, just a 5-minute walk to the subway station, and there are plenty of shopping malls and restaurants nearby. The price is very reasonable compared to similar hotels, and we will definitely stay here again!"

"Love everything except that our window faces the courtyard which is where breakfast was served in the morning. This made it awkward for us that other guests could see the interior of our bedroom when we opened the door. If we closed the curtain, we had trouble opening the door which was blocked by the closed curtain. Not thoughtful design."

"Stayed here for 3 days while visiting Datong. The room was spotlessly clean and well-ventilated, with no strange smells. The bedding was soft and comfortable, ensuring a good night's sleep. There's a convenience store downstairs, and it's a short, direct taxi ride to all the attractions, which saved a lot of time. Overall, it was a very comfortable stay.
