Over the years we've stayed in a fair selection of these small luxury properties, but it was only in 2021, when a good friend from the island, introduced us to the Sao João, that we finally found somewhere to call our home here. Built just over twenty years ago in a beautiful neo classical style, this 42 room, family owned and operated property, delivers everything we seek. The interior is a delight to enter, with a feeling of light and spaciousness to all of the common parts. The greeting from the reception team upon one's arrival is warm, welcoming, and genuine. The guest rooms are beautifully decorated and furnished, with vast and extremely comfortable beds, bathrooms are also far larger than average. Staff throughout the hotel are friendly, courteous, and unfailingly helpful. There are magnificently tended gardens surrounding the property, two swimming pools, a really elegant bar, one of Funchal's very finest restaurants, a games room, and gym, and an elegant spa, offering a wide range of treatments. Guests arriving by car are able to use the underground car park, and there is a daily shuttle bus service to the centre of Funchal, even though this is less than a gentle twenty minute stroll away. For us, there really is nowhere else we would ever stay in this fabulous city.
