Our family with three generations very much enjoyed the food, bath, and hospitality at Yakuoin. We have very little Japanese, but felt welcome and had an English speaking guide for the morning service and tour at Zenkoji Temple.

This place is ~5mins walk from Zenkoji temple. neighborhood is peaceful at night.
Shoes to be removed outside the accommodation. Rooms are on the 2nd floor so you'll have to carry your luggage up (there's no lift).
Room (with window) is huge. You'll have to head downstairs to use the shared toilet and shared onsen (no toilet inside the room).
We were only allowed 30mins of onsen time for 2 pax - couples weren't allowed to use the onsen concurrently so we had to go one after another (i'm not sure if the instructions got lost in translation..). Felt very rushed so i didnt really get to enjoy the onsen experience, but overall was nice and clean.
Interesting 6.30am tour around the area and within the temple itself, followed by a simple vegetarian breakfast (porridge with omakase-styled sides with miso soup) back at the accommodation. The morning tour lasted from 6.30am - 8.30am.
The accommodation provided a fleece blanket to each pax to bring to Zenkoji temple to keep us warm during the morning praying ceremony. We went on 30 Dec and it was SO COLD.
Overall interesting experience but accommodation price is pretty steep IMO.

朝ご飯がとても美味しい。部屋が結構広い。トイレが綺麗。風呂も気持ち良い。中庭も風情がある。ミスターの写真がある。飲まなかったが梅酒が美味しそう。ネスカフェの緑茶マシーンが良い。和テイストを楽しみたいならば最高です。
薬王院専属のお朝事の案内人が大変親切で説明もとても分かり易く面白いので絶対お薦めです。
雨戸がないので朝日がちょっと眩しかった点だけ減点。

ご開帳の期間の2022年6月初旬平日に利用。お朝時に参列する為には善光寺宿坊に泊まる必要があるのですが、1人で利用できるところがなく。選択肢がありませんでした。通常宿泊費6000~8000円となっていますが。1人で1部屋のせいか？朝食付きだと18000円。夕食の精進料理を付けると21000円を超えました。 その精進料理がお粗末。天麩羅はべちゃとしているし。お出汁の味も全くしない煮物や伸びきって不味いドレッシングがかかった蕎麦サラダ。盛り付けはそれらしくしているのですが、美味しかったのは出来合いだろう胡麻豆腐と、かろうじて温かいけんちん汁。その上、隣のテーブルの旦那さんがお酒を飲むからご飯は後でとオーダーしていたのに、それを忘れて１回その旦那さんの前に置いたものを。私のテーブルにぽんと置かれ。あ然😱え〜と抗議の声をあげたのに給仕した若い女性は知らん顔で行ってしまいました。彼女は作務衣を着ていなかったので。専任スタッフではなかったのかもしれませんが、接遇は最悪です。 コロナのこともあり、時節柄気持ち悪かったです。 宿坊は普通の旅館とは違いますという事を隠れ蓑にしているようで腹がたちました。 食事は不味くて、このクオリティに3000円も払うなら外食した方がよっぽどましです。 部屋は広く快適でしたが。 お朝事に参加するには朝4時に玄関前に集合しなくてはならないのに。壁が薄くて隣の会話やテレビの音がまる聴こえでなかなか寝つけませんでした💦 朝4時に集合させた割には、外から受け入れた方の祈祷内容の申し送りなど段取りが悪く。前日の電話でのやり取りが反映されていなかったそうで。そこで30分ほどの待ち時間があり。結果お朝事の席取りに影響が出ました。 案内人の方はとても行き届いていらしたので。宿坊側の問題でしょう。チェックインを担当してくださった若いショートカットの方もとても感じが良かっただけに。 とても残念でした。 お・も・て・な・し は期待しないで利用してください💦 接遇は最低限、勉強し直していただきたいです。 私自身が個人事業主なので、余計に気になるのかもしれませんが。 宿坊はお寺さんなので、、接遇なんて関係ないと思われているのなら。仏の教えにも反するのではないでしょうか？ 善光寺さんの格を下げる残念さでした。リピートは無いです。
