Macdonald Plas Talgarth Resort

Accommodation was needed urgently. Stayed one night in Swansea and wanted to try somewhere further north. We had two large dogs with us and Pets Pyjamas came to the rescue. Our room was quiet and comfortable situated in the Mansion House during a warm spell in May. The surrounding countryside, walking and climbing were awesome. Would suggest staying a least a week to get to know the area. Really liked Barmouth and a lovely family run restaurant there called the Lobster Pot. Well worth a visit. On the last night we met with a couple from my wife’s home city - Perth, Western Australia. Would love to go all over again.

Our room was in the old mansion house building on the top floor. The room was cold and the radiators only got lukewarm warm which meant we had to wear layers of clothes in the room. Even so, the windows had condensation every morning. The en suite loo was blocked but we did manage to unblock it. We didn’t like the fact that the rooms had moths and small flies in residence. Overall not what we were expecting from a Macdonald property. We left a day early.

Brilliant views, spacious accomodation and a lovely old school resort in an excellent location to explore mid Wales. 20 minutes from beaches, Dolgoth Falls and Cader Idris. Recommend The Black Lion Inn for a pub meal or the resort pub for a sundowner. Also Welsh Coast Path goes straight through the resort.

I have resisted to write a review for Plas Talgarth as the receptionist who dealt with my complaint was so helpful and the the duty manager seemed to support my complaint; but unfortunately terms which were agreed to by Plas Talgarth and MacDonald resorts have not been met (full refund within 3-5 days). We arrived to a very dirty accomodation. It was significantly below standard and general expectation. The bed sheets were stained with yellow marks (questionable), mould on bedside lamps, rust on bedside lamps, cracks in the infrastructure, unclean kitchen appliances including fridge, cooker and toaster, damp marks on the walls, general dirt on walls/switches, staining on carpets, staining on walls, faeces in toilet, a strong fish odour, food deposits in drawers including cutlery tray, questionable brown particles over shower curtains etc. It was disgusting! The children bedrooms were downstairs next to a random sauna, bathroom and the front door. Both the children would have had access to given there was no stair gate. This is incredibly dangerous. One positive, the view from the accommodation was gorgeous. As we arrived to the accomodation at 11.15pm, we had no choice to stay with 2 young infants. We had to use our own makeshift bed covers from items that we used on travel and for cooking and sterilising bottles we used our own items from our car as we did not want to use anything that was unclean (which was most of the accommodation). This again, was not to standard you would expect at a hotel/resort. As soon as reception was open, we expressed our disappointment and that we either wanted alternative accomodation or a full refund. The receptionist was helpful as she could be and contacted her manager. Whilst this was going on, we contacted the main numbers on the MacDonald website - here we were told people that we needed to communicate with were not at work and were given email addresses. We emailed these addresses and are still YET to receive a reply. Later that afternoon I received an email from the receptionist confirming that we would receive a full refund within 3 to 5 days and to check out. We did this all following the agreement. Then we drastically had to find alternative accomodation in the local area for our young family, which is not easy. We also had to pay for this accommodation and as it was at short notice it was higher than usual. 5 days later and we still have not received our refund. We have contacted again all the numbers provided (conveniently Plas Talgarth phone line is not active) and have been told that it is not that area of the company, try someone else and we have now exhausted this route. We have also sent countless emails to email addresses provided by the call team and are yet to receive a response. Additionally, we have emailed Talgarth themselves on several occasions and are yet to receive a response. We are greatly frustrated. We are greatly disappointed. The whole team were super friendly and helpful. Special thanks to Rhydian who was are go-to guy throughout our stay. The facilities were just what we needed, the hotel was in such a great location. We all want to go back already! Furthermore, my son left his no.1 cuddly behind, and we didn't realise until we were home - 5 hours drive away. The team found Reindeer and arranged to post him back. What amazing service. 👏

4 families and parents met for a big family gathering with kids and dogs. We stayed in lapwing 3 2bed and found it really spacious with the kitchen diner lounge all one room, which worked really well for socialising. We also enjoyed watching the wildlife from the large patio windows. We previously stayed in patio2 3bed which has a similar layout but felt lapwing was a little updated and safer for kids. Downside: SO many fire doors and split level bedrooms which are difficult with young children. Also our monitor signal didn't stretch beyond the kitchen. The apartment was clean and had everything we needed except washing up liquid. The pool was used daily for our trip and we easily booked and was never overly busy. All apartments and facilities could do with modernization, but we knew this. The pool was slightly cooler each day and changing areas cold. The staff were friendly and helpful. The onsite pub staff were friendly and helpful, but we didn't eat this time as last time it was an experience we didn't want to repeat, expensive and not great. The nearby Riverside pub is excellent and bookable. The nature trail has the most beautiful views and picnic tables, best place for a picnic and short walk that toddler could manage. Definitely planning another trip to enjoy what the area has to offer, beautiful countryside and gorgeous beaches. Just hope one day someone spends a bit of money on it upgrading the accommodation, adds to the play park and changes the pub into a family pub showing sports etc.

Very disappointing..😞! The only wonderful thing is that here you are greeted at the reception RHYDIAN - an extraordinarily kind and welcoming boy. He welcomes you with a friendly smile as if this were his home. Also, he tried to help me change the apartment, but unfortunately he didn't succeed. The expectations were different 😞! Unfortunately, the pictures did not reflect the reality. Going over the very old and damaged furniture, a professional cleaning of the carpets is absolutely necessary. As a solution- we moved beds into the living room and all sleep here, because it was very cold in the house at night - it was a house on the ground floor, with external walls, with the smell of mold and quite unwelcoming. A big SHAME on those who promote this place! I chose this place not because of the price, but because of the advertisement - but it's a big Lie! Manuela

A big thanks to the hotel for a great experience. A party of 60 have just returned from a 2 night stay. We stopped in Heron 1 which was great, clean and truly comfortable, plenty of hot water and a great sauna. We ate in the pub and had a good curry with 1st class service. Do from the 4 of us in Heron 1 many thanks. We will have no hesitation to return.

Very disappointed with our experience at this resort. Arrived late afternoon 2nd March. Katie on reception was very helpful. Heron 11 was our holiday stay. Bed was clean, toilet n sink in main bedroom too. Unfortunately, the rest of the house was not up to standard. Kitchen floor was awful. Likewise outside of bin, cooker covered in fat!...fridge dirty inside too. Carpets had clearly not been hoovered at all. Food all over kitchen floor. Table and chairs covered in crumbs, and under table too. Fireplace was just so dusty it looked awful. Likewise all windowsills, hair laying about. Earring on floor!...Cooking grill pan n roasting dish was unusable with grease etc. Three toilet brushes were in a dreadful state. Just ends of toilet rolls left for us to use. Shower tray not nice and all toilet n bathrooms floors had not been swept!...even glasses for bathroom use were left mucky! Very disappointed. Receptionist on Sunday apologised and replaced toilet brushes and toilet rolls, but staff shortages are very clear all round. Time share isn't fit for purpose any more for which we purchased it. Usually use Elmers Court, but sadly standards have gone downhill. Windows could have done with a good clean too. Overall, only stayed 3 nights out of 7 and came home thoroughly disappointed. Would not recommend this to anyone. Whilst we were there we met a couple of older ladies who was in the process of moving there house too as their first one smelt of awful drains. My husband spent two hours hoovering to make it somewhere cleaner for us. Not acceptable really and not what you would expect to arrive on holiday too!
