The Fort Garry Hotel Spa and Conference Centre, Ascend Hotel Collection

Winnipeg|0.64km from Holy Trinity Anglican Church
We spent two midweek nights here. This lovely downtown hotel was built in 1913, and has a beautiful early 20c lobby. If you stay in an historic hotel, you have to understand that some things will not be as good as staying at a modern hotel. For example, bedrooms and bathrooms will often be smaller, there may not be a pool, etc. But for us, being a part of history is enjoyable, and we've stayed in many hotels with an historic background. We found the Fort Garry to be a lovely place---the historic vibe is definitely there. The hotel's location is great---you can walk to the riverside Forks Historic District, with its famous market, museums, etc. And the hotel is only a block from the historic railroad station. Yes, our room was a bit small, but the bed was comfortable. We asked for a room with a good view, and got one on the 5th floor with a nice view of the railroad station and garden areas nearby. The staff here were exceedingly friendly, from the front desk staff to the restaurant servers. For example, our breakfast server from the previous day made a special effort to come over and talk to us the next day, even though she was not our server that day. Really good effort to make you feel comfortable! The hotel has a very nice fitness room, but no pool (you can pay for pool privileges at an adjacent building). The beautiful hotel restaurant (Oval Room) also reeks of history. We had breakfast there two times and dessert (not dinner) once. It's highly rated, and the food was very good. Parking here can be an issue. You can self-park on a fairly small one floor lot on the hotel's first floor, or down below in a basement garage. The first floor lot often fills up with patrons of the restaurant or business functions, but the basement lot was never full, and we used that one on both nights of our stay. Just note that the basement garage has no elevator. Overall, we had a delightful stay at the Fort Garry.

This is no place for elderly, females or families. If you want cheap, stay here. It is very inexpensive and the rooms and staff are nice (ask for ”medical discount”). BUT.. If you are elderly, female or a family please find a better place. We were accosted and threatened by a large young man with scars on his face because I asked him to wait for the next elevator (there was a limit of two people in the elevator at a time due to social distancing and my elderly mom was with me), but he pushed in anyway. With no mask on either.. We had to exit the elevator and wait for another. He looked at me and said ”What? You got a problem? What's your problem!?” He said the same thing to me in the lobby as we came out of the next elevator. I was very afraid. I saw him going back and forth from the hotel many times visiting vehicles in the parking lot. I am convinced he was selling drugs out of his hotel room. But that wasn't the only thing.. As soon as the sun went down gangs of very loud motorcycles began racing up and down the streets in front of the hotel. It seemed like it was some kind of circuit. Then cars would race. All this was punctuated all night long with sirens. One night we heard loud gunshots. It seemed like the police abandoned the downtown area at sunset - just like a movie where the gangs took over the city at night. We were freaked out. If you're a gangster or a gang-banger this place would be ideal, but it's definitely not for a regular person, females, elderly folk or family. We never felt safe and despite our concerns the staff never helped us feel any safer. They never enforced their mask rules or social distancing rules. I think they were just as afraid of the riffraff in the hotel as we were. We will NEVER stay there again. It's simply not worth the risk.

Room was clean, modern, and quite. We were at the end of a hall, so that probably helped. We stayed in a bi-level King suite, which I would highly recommend. The view from the room was not pretty, just a roof of an adjacent building. However we are not in Winnipeg to look out the hotel room window. Bed was very comfortable and the excellent water pressure in the shower was wonderful. At night, the living room area was rather dark and could use a lighting upgrade. Hotel staff were very friendly, from the breakfast (they should have a sign saying ”please seat yourself” - as guests sometimes wait a while for host to come over and tell them to seat where ever they want) to the pleasant staff at the front desk. Always lots of staff at reception, so no waiting. Although we didn't use the pool area, we looked at it, and it was one of the most appealing looking hotel pools we've ever seen. We used the attached underground parking for 5 days - no issues. Parking area is quite large with numerous levels, would seem to be ample space. Easy in/out access throughout the day.

Clean room. Set up of the room was wonderful with small kitchen and office table and chair and a couch. Nice breakfast and friendly staff.i was not aware that they take $400 damage deposit. Still waiting on that refund. Otherwise it was an awesome stay.

The hotel is very close to the airport, just a few minutes drive, the health is very good, the staff are very polite, the breakfast is not much, but the taste is very good, and it is different every day, the room is very big, there is a kitchen dishwasher, do it yourself The meal is very convenient, the hotel also has free parking and a self-service laundry room and a free gym. There is a big supermarket not far from the hotel, really recommended, very cost-effective hotel

Prior to Covid-19 I used to stay a this hotel many times. My latest visit in June 2022 was a huge disappointment. The parking area at the hotel was greatly reduced. The exterior of the hotel was dirty! I was given a room on the second floor and the widows were so dirty you could not see clearly out of them. On check in there were two security guards on duty, one was asleep at the computer desk. People and children were running and slamming doors past 2 am. Security did nothing!. I stayed 2 nights after night one the room was not vacuumed and toiletries were not replaced. I was charged $149 per night for a regular room. On night number 2 I arrived back at the hotel there were piles of garbage across from the elevator, the garbage was still there the next morning plus garbage in the hallways. The smell was bad. Once again 2 security guards on duty, this time one was asleep in the breakfast area! There were no vending machines but the staff were happy to to sell a small bottle of warm water for $3.00. When I expressed my concerns at check out, the desk clerk blamed the flood evacuees for most of the hotel issues, which in my opinion was a poor excuse. The hotel is starting to look run down. The accommodations and customer service was not what I am.used to at the Country Inn and Suites in Winnipeg.

The staff was so friendly and willing to help us out with a great rate! The room was spacious, clean and well kept. The hot tub was not in order unfortunately. Not ideal after cycling for 8 hours but we made do. The breakfast selection was good. There was a good variety but the apple juice and coffee tasted very watered down
