Went for a birthday Sunday Lunch, local so parked up as we always have. At least £100 on food & drink & have just received letter from MinsterBaywatch demanding £100 for 2 hrs parking in an empty car park. We now know why it was empty & won't be going back. Another example of locals not welcome in their own city & I fear for the future of the pub. Do not advertise free parking when it clearly no longer is

A regular, but popped in to see a friend visiting York, was in 90 mins, Got a car park fine, was a paying customer, advised the pub and told to contest the charge, proved from my bank account i was a patron and it went up to £100... not worth.....it... also advertises "a large car park to the rear to accommodate your needs" Not to return.....

Whilst this is a good pub, which I have visited on a number of occasions - I cannot recommend it! I called in to the pub, just after 7pm, on wet March evening. I parked my car and enjoyed a drink in the pub. 2 weeks later I receive a parking ticket for £100! Whilst there are signs in the dark carpark, that are blocked my other cars parking in front of them, there was no indication that I had to leave my reg at the bar! I have contacted the pub, no response, so suspect there may be a profit share exercise! Very disappointing and given the number of pubs in York - this one is no longer on my list!

Visited here a few times and always found it to be ok however on latest visit we’ve received a parking fine despite always parking there! We arrived at pub and told staff we were parked there (like we did the previous summer when we parked there for over 24 hours). They didn’t tell us we needed to sign in or leave car details which apparently you need to do, even though there isn’t visible signage stating that and the staff didn’t tell us when we said we’d parked there. Now we’ve got to pay a £100 parking fine for visiting the pub! Expensive pint and Diet Coke! I’ve tried contacting the pub directly for help but I’ve been ignored. Will NEVER visit again.

On Sunday 18th Feb my wife and I called into the Black Swan for Sunday lunch we had checked the Webb site and noticed they serve lunch until 16.45 . We arrived at 14.40 and a girl showed us to a table and gave us a couple of menus the room was very quiet apart from a table in the corner with four people eating, the food looked nice .We had to ask the girl to clean the table as none of the tables had been cleared of glasses and plates.I went to the bar to order our meals and drinks, there was a couple of people dressed as vikings in front of me getting served ,they ordered meals and drinks and sat down.I ordered our drinks and then asked what meat did they have for the Sunday roast the barmaid said we’ve stopped serving food I said they’ve(the vikings) just ordered food.yes but we’ve stopped serving now sorry about that. I told her I wouldn’t have ordered the drinks if I had known you weren’t serving food I asked her why she showed us to a table and give us a menu only 10 minutes ago.No answer but did offer me my money back for the drinks I declined as i was by then in need of a drink. As we were finishing our drinks in the now empty soulless room we could hear singing and chanting from upstairs and found out there was a room full of vikings having a great time no doubt belly’s full. The black swan needs to look after all there customers locals and tourists alike not just Vikings.

The Black Swan is an oasis of history within a quite contemporary developed area of York just outside the City Centre. A stunning 15th Century timber framed building with 16th and 17th Century extensions making this pub a wonderful warren of beautifully panelled rooms. With low ceilings, beams and even in the main room, a huge inglenook fireplace that is frequently lit. If you really want the historic experience in York then The Black Swan really is the perfect place for you. It's only let down slightly by its rather static beer offering but at least there's always some decent staples like Vocation, Timothy Taylors and Theakstons OP is always on the bar.

If you like the olde worlde feel of uneven floors, walls, windows and doors, this inn is a dream. Really takes you back in time. Located a few minutes walk from most of the attractions and shops. Throw in excellent food and hearty breakfast and you have the perfect stay. Loved it.

We stayed here yesterday as part of a present for my wife. (GHOST EXPERIENCE) i booked well in advance and asked for the turpin room. On arrivall i was put in the stag room. Once i showed them the booking conformation i got The Turpin room. The room did not look as old as it does in the photos on the web site. I dont think it had been cleaned properly as i found someones boxer shorts behind the sofa bed. The room is good for one night. There was no milk for making drinks. There are no wardrobes for hanging clothes up on. The pub itself is great plenty of ales to drink although london prices. We did not eat at night but the breakfast was good. Cooked as you needed and nice and hot. Overall nice stop over. Had no ghost issues. But i dont think the room is justified by the price. And the staff could be a little happier. So dissappointed.
