The hotel is in a very picturesque location, overlooking a lake. The bedrooms are large, with comfortable beds and prices for a stay are very reasonable. Having said that, the completely uncalled for surly, unfriendly and distinctly unhelpful of one member of staff at reception when we returned to the hotel after going to the Newton Abbot races soured the overnight stay for our group of 7. Firstly, after serving drinks to two members of our group, who arrived at the hotel ahead of the rest of us, he didn't allow them to take the drinks outside to a veranda area so they could have a smoke and could provide no good reason for refusing the polite request. Secondly, when the rest of us arrived at the hotel at around 11.30pm the bar was shut and he refused to serve us any drinks, even though we asked politely, merely wanting one more drink before going to bed. He was also curt, rude and distinctly unhelpful when we asked him to point us in the direction of our rooms, giving one word answers and seeming to regard us all as a hindrance to him. All in all, this experience made us regret our choice of hotel and we are disinclined to return to the hotel in future. A further gripe was that the breakfast service was poor and slow, with cooked breakfasts taking 25 minutes to arrive and many key items missing and not replenished unless guests specifically asked, including cups, tea bags, sugar and orange juice,

I have stayed here before. The price I paid for a Saturday night was £39. The hotel has been refurbishing in stages for a while so it can be pot luck if you have a refurbished room or not. The room was clean and bathroom spotless. Lady who checked us in was very friendly. The only complaint I could say was the room we had phone signal was non existent, could have been warmer in the room but it's between summer and winter and for us it was OK. I like this hotel and for the price you'd struggle to find somewhere as good. Will visit again.

Our driver stays in hotels all over the UK while transporting vehicles for our business, and he says this is by far one of the best places he stays. The hotel is consistently very clean, the service from the staff is excellent, and everything is well organised and comfortable. A major advantage for us is the parking. It is very convenient for larger vehicles, and our driver is able to park a truck and trailer without difficulty, which is not always easy to find when travelling for work. Because of this, whenever we have jobs in the Exeter area, this is always the hotel he prefers to stay at. Highly recommended and we will definitely continue using it whenever we are in the area.

29/04/2025. We have been to the cliffden hotel three times and had a club room on the first floor they were nice large rooms but this time we were on the second floor our room was very small and claustrophobic nothing like the photos in the booking . We asked for a different room and the man at reception said see me tomorrow morning and if there's a larger room you can have it. Later on in the day my partner went to reception to book a table for an evening meal for us. While she was booking the table the lady at the reception said there were no other rooms you can have. The barman was very polite nice to chat to. We only had one meal in the evening cod and chips could not find much cod it was all batter. Other meal gammon and chips gammon would be good to repair your soles on your shoes. Go to the local chip shop absolutely beautiful. We used the indoor swimming pool which was nice and clean. The gardens are lovely, and the beer is very expensive. Go to the jolly sailor pub with drinks at good prices. Reception is not very helpful. I can't understand why the hotel puts people with dogs on the second floor because when the dog wants to go to the toilet by the time you get down to the entrance the dog has already peed on the carpets. Luckily our dog can hold her pee and she is small enough to carry.I have followed other people with their dogs and seen it. Overall we were very disappointed with our stay this time.

The hotel itself was nice; can’t fault it. Our room however, had a weird, stale smell and was off-putting, with no way to ventilate the room by opening the windows, as you cannot open them - A/C is not a natural ventilation. Bed was comfortable, slept perfectly fine, just not nice waking up with the smell, as mentioned before. Breakfast was good, although I’ve had better.

I am a frequent returning guest. The hotel is situated at bottom end of Totnes main street. It is a busy hotel and bar, serving food. The building is old with one central staircase leading to rooms. All the rooms I have occupied are very clean, decorated in a tasteful way and the beds are comfortable.. Teas are good quality Tea Pigs a small coffee machine is also provided, plus a bottle of water. I am a coeliac and vegetarian. Eating in other hotels is almost impossible, they simply do not cater for my dietary requirements, thankfully I am guaranteed a delicious breakfast here. One of the most important reasons for returning here is the customer service. The staff here are really approachable and friendly. Any issue you may have regarding your stay, they will do their best to help you resolve. T have stayed in other hotels etc if there aren't any vacancies here but from my experience if you like a relaxed friendly environment, lovely rooms, location Totnes as a base, then this is the place to come . It is also a short walk away from the most beautiful cinema I've ever been in, which is tucked away, along the main high street, My only wish is that more free parking was available . The hotel offers capacity for approx 6 cars at the rear of the hotel. There is plenty of paid parking in main street and nearby Morrisons.

The service was nice and helpful, I would definitely recommend this hotel to others. The proximity to the sea is a very big plus.

Previously emailed to ask if car parking available and was told yes, car parking on site, arrived to find no car parking and you have to park in a public car park (and pay) up the hill from the hotel. The manager did apologise and waived the £20 early check in fee . Was then advised the England match would be shown in the bar and drinks would be 3 for 2. Got back to the hotel to watch and take advantage to be told by the bar member that the tills were not working and because she couldn’t work out 30% off the drinks they were not offering any 3 for 2 and what did we want her to do about it. Unfortunately poor customer service which isn’t what I would expect and I wouldn’t choose to stay there again.

Lovely friendly place next to the river. Plenty of parking facilities just over the bridge which is approx five minute walk.  The room itself is spacious enough although for some may be a little dated. Bed is comfortable with a lovely duvet and pillows. Only downside was the curtains which are not blackout so do let in too much light for me but heyho I still had a reasonable night sleep  To get to the room we stayed in, we had to walk up a spiral staircase which for some people, this could be a struggle as the steps have been assembled quite tightly due to space so make the steps on the small side, there is obviously a handrail so coming down side ways helps.  Breakfast was continental consisting of fruit, cereal, yoghurt ( which was exceptionally tasty) toast etc. An English breakfast was offered at an additional cost but we preferred this option.  All in all a lovely place to stay with friendly welcoming hosts who were on hand to offer advise and assistance should you need it.

The hotel is lovely, great atmosphere and brilliant location. I got the sea view room and it's literally in front view of the beach and all the action. The room was large, spacious, clean, massive super-king bed, and the facilities were good as I discovered a basement gym which is really neat. However, as frequent traveller who loves functionality, in comparison to what I've seen in other like-for-like hotels, for a premium room with sea view, one of the window panes were smudged and dirty so I couldn't fully appreciate the ”sea view”. Secondly, for a premium room you would expect biscuits, water bottle, fridge as minimum, and optional extras for premium rooms I see bath robes and slippers. But the hotel didn't have them at all. All on top of that they didn't serve dinner as a whole (and hence no room service) and then charging £15 for parking, which is ridiculous to be totally honest. I parked on street 2 min walk away £6 by 12pm next day.
