Shanghai offers diverse neighbourhoods to suit every traveller. For first-time visitors, Huangpu District is a top pick, combining the iconic Bund skyline with bustling Nanjing Road. Just across the river, Pudong’s Lujiazui dazzles with futuristic skyscrapers and luxury hotels – perfect for modern city vibes. If you prefer stylish shopping and art deco charm, Jing’an District near West Nanjing Road delivers both history and trendy cafes. Meanwhile, Xuhui District appeals to culture lovers with its leafy French Concession streets and boutique stays. Lastly, Hongqiao Transportation Hub works well for business trips or short stays, with quick airport and bullet train links. Each area gives a different taste of this dynamic city.

Huangpu District (The Bund & Nanjing Road)

The Bund and Nanjing Road capture Shanghai’s essence, blending historic charm with modern energy, making them a top choice for travellers. Staying here means easy access to the Huangpu River’s iconic skyline, colonial buildings, and Nanjing Road’s endless shopping – perfect for soaking up the city’s spirit. Its central location suits those keen to explore on foot or hop onto metro lines, ideal for first-timers, avid shoppers, or anyone craving a lively urban vibe.

Luxury seekers and business travellers are drawn to the area’s polished atmosphere, while budget-conscious visitors appreciate the mix of options. Hotels near The Bund often lean upscale, with lavish international brands and boutique stays offering river views, while hotels in Nanjing Road cater to varied budgets, from mid-range chains to stylish hidden gems tucked behind the main strip. Both areas buzz day and night, though expect busier streets and higher prices than quieter districts.

Pudong (Lujiazui)

Pudong’s Lujiazui district offers a futuristic contrast to Shanghai’s historic heart, dominated by soaring skyscrapers like the Oriental Pearl Tower and Shanghai Tower. Staying here puts you at the centre of the city’s financial hub, with jaw-dropping skyline views across the Huangpu River—ideal for travellers drawn to modern architecture and buzzing business energy. Its proximity to metro lines and major attractions suits business visitors, families, and those keen to explore landmarks like the Shanghai Aquarium or the observation decks of the World Financial Centre.

Moreover, hotels near the Shanghai Tower and other iconic structures tend to be upscale, with sleek international chains and luxury high-rises dominating the area. However, mid-range options do exist closer to quieter pockets. Hotels in Lujiazui’s business district often cater to corporate travellers, offering conference facilities and easy access to office towers, while those near Century Park provide a calmer stay.

While prices lean higher than in older neighbourhoods, the convenience of shopping malls, efficient transport links, and that postcard-perfect skyline make it worthwhile. Whether you're visiting for business or leisure, Lujiazui offers a dynamic and convenient base for exploring Shanghai.

When it comes to accommodation, hotels in Jing’an district and hotels near West Nanjing Road offer a range of options. Mid-range hotels are also plentiful, providing comfortable stays without breaking the bank.

Xuhui District

Travellers choosing hotels in Xuhui District’s transport hub enjoy easy access to Shanghai’s key routes. With the South Shanghai Railway Station nearby and multiple metro lines, this area works well for those needing quick trips to Pudong Airport or business parks. The location balances city convenience with quieter streets compared to busier central districts, making it practical without sacrificing peace.

Mid-range chain hotels dominate here, offering clean rooms and reliable service at reasonable prices. Business guests and budget-conscious tourists often pick these spots, as many hotels in Xuhui provide meeting spaces or family-friendly amenities. Service apartments also appeal to longer-stay visitors wanting kitchen facilities.

While not packed with tourist sights, the area connects easily to Xujiahui’s shopping malls and the tree-lined French Concession – just a short ride away. For travellers prioritising transport links over nightlife, hotels in this part of Xuhui strike a sensible balance.

I recently stayed at the Crowne Plaza Hotel and had an overall decent experience. The location was outstanding, just a short walk to the main shopping street and conveniently close to the metro station. While the room was on the smaller side compared to other hotels, it was reasonable for the price. The property shows its age, and cleanliness was average, but acceptable. What truly stood out was the service. The staff were warm and accommodating, offering a complimentary late check-out and a thoughtful birthday surprise for my friend, including a cake, fruit platter, and a handwritten note which was an unexpectedly delightful gesture. The only letdown was breakfast, which had limited options and felt underwhelming. That said, the attentive service and prime location made up for it.

Hotel location is the best place to travel to Shanghai. The hotel staff service is excellent, too In particular, a Chinese employee named William responded very kindly. The night view of Shanghai Waitan from the hotel room is also fantastic The hotel's interior facilities are not very impressive. The bedding was good, but the facility felt too old. However, it was a pleasant trip to Shanghai because of the friendly staff's service.

I recently stayed at Pullman Shanghai Jing An and was thoroughly impressed by every aspect of this hotel. From its prime location to its thoughtful amenities and outstanding service, it truly exceeded my expectations.   **1. Prime Location & Accessibility**   The hotel’s proximity to **Shanghai Railway Station** and metro lines (1/3/4) makes it a top choice for both business and leisure travelers. I could easily walk to the station in under 5 minutes, and popular attractions like the Bund, Nanjing Road, and People’s Square were just a short drive away. For those arriving by air, Pudong and Hongqiao airports are also within a manageable distance.   **2. Modern, Comfortable Rooms**   My **Executive Suite** was spacious, elegantly designed, and equipped with everything I needed. The bed, with its high-quality linens, was incredibly comfortable, and the rain shower in the bathroom added a touch of luxury. I particularly loved the **Dyson-style hairdryer**—a small detail that made a big difference. The room also featured soundproofing, ensuring a peaceful stay despite the bustling location.   **3. Outstanding Dining & Facilities**   The breakfast spread at **Venu Restaurant** was exceptional, especially the **Shanghai-style scallion oil noodles**—a delicious local highlight. The executive lounge access (via Accor’s Privilege Card) offered a refined atmosphere with tasty snacks and drinks during Happy Hour. The 20-meter indoor pool and well-equipped gym were perfect for unwinding after a busy day.   **4. Impeccable Service**   The staff went above and beyond to ensure a seamless stay. The front desk team was courteous and efficient, even upgrading my room as a loyalty member. Special mention to the concierge for arranging smooth airport transfers and providing helpful local tips.   **5. Commitment to Sustainability**   I appreciated the hotel’s dedication to **ESG initiatives**, such as reducing single-use plastics and participating in Accor’s Planet 21 program. The eco-friendly toiletries and energy-efficient practices aligned perfectly with my values.   **Final Thoughts**   Pullman Shanghai Jing An is a gem for travelers seeking convenience, comfort, and conscientious hospitality. Whether you’re here for business or leisure, this hotel delivers on all fronts. I’ll undoubtedly choose it again on my next visit to Shanghai!   **Rating: ★★★★★**   *Highly recommended for its strategic location, luxurious amenities, and exceptional service!*

This room is not as nice as the room with twin beds. The down pillow available on the pillow menu was very flat. Actually, all of the pillows were not really good for sleeping on (they all deflated very quickly). Still, the pillow menu is a nice touch. Additionally, one of the lights by the night stand didn’t work. The temperature of the faucet and bathtub were not easy to control and moderate easily.

This post is for Diana. I wanted to extend my heartfelt gratitude for the exceptional hospitality you provided during our recent stay. From the moment you learned about our reservation, your proactive approach made all the difference. Arranging connecting rooms was an absolute lifesaver—it allowed my child and me to stay close while maintaining our own space, turning what could have been a logistical challenge into seamless comfort. Your thoughtful guidance truly enriched our experience. The detailed recommendations about local attractions helped us explore the city with confidence, and your tip about the April 17th Bund light show was nothing short of magical. Witnessing the dazzling display became the highlight of our trip, a memory we’ll cherish forever. What sets you apart is how you transformed a routine hotel stay into something personal and unforgettable. Your warmth, professionalism, and attention to detail reflect the very best of hospitality. It’s no exaggeration to say that your efforts have convinced us to return to your hotel for the remainder of our travels—we can’t imagine staying anywhere else now! Thank you for going above and beyond to make our stay special. You’ve not only met our needs but anticipated them, and that’s a rare gift. We look forward to seeing you again soon!

We booked a Parent-Kid Suite, which was advertised to accommodate four adults, but throughout our stay, only three towels were provided. Additionally, the only bathroom is located right next to one of the bedrooms, with no door and a fully transparent shower space. This setup is extremely awkward and inconvenient unless you’re traveling with very young children. The noise from the bathroom also inevitably disturbs whoever is sleeping in that bedroom. Another disappointment was the check-in process. We arrived at the hotel around 4 PM, but the front desk informed us that our room was still not ready due to a late check-out from the previous guests. This was frustrating, especially after a long flight, as we had expected to check in on time and freshen up immediately. That said, aside from the strange room layout, the hotel does have its positives. The location is great, with a partial view of The Bund, and the price is reasonable for this area. Overall, while the hotel has potential, the room design and service need improvement.

Jing'an District Shanghai|2.97km from city centre
Kunlun Jing’an is our go-to hotel whenever we visit Shanghai. We live in Hangzhou and often travel to Shanghai, usually on weekends. Since moving to Hangzhou last year, we’ve always stayed at this hotel—it’s become our preferred choice because of the excellent service, comfortable rooms, and outstanding staff. Everyone, from the concierge to the hotel bar, room service, breakfast team, and front desk, has been helpful and professional. We’ve never had any issues during our stays—in fact, this was our fifth time staying here. However, during our recent stay on Friday night, for my husband’s weekend birthday celebration, we encountered some problems. We checked in late and went straight out for dinner. When we returned to our room, I stepped on a wet patch next to the bed. I was fairly certain it was urine, but we gave the hotel the benefit of the doubt, assuming it might just be water. We called the operator—who, I must say, was not the most helpful staff member we’ve encountered here. She sent two employees to inspect the wet spot, and they insisted it was only water. We offered to dry it ourselves with a hairdryer, so my husband tried. As soon as he began, a strong odor became apparent—it definitely smelled like urine. My husband pressed tissues onto the rug to check the liquid’s colour, and they turned yellow. We called the operator again, and she said someone would come to re-examine it. After waiting 15 minutes with no response, we called once more at 11:30 PM—I was exhausted by this point. My husband spoke to the same person, who assured us someone would arrive soon. Again, no one came. At 12:30 AM, my husband called again, now extremely frustrated. Finally, a staff member arrived and called someone on the phone what I assume was the hotel manager. To our disappointment, the manager asked an unreasonable question: “What time did you check in? Why didn’t you report this immediately?” My husband replied that we had entered the room at 7 PM, we were thinking why we would inspect every inch of the rug for wet patches? Eventually, they moved us to another room of the same type. After settling in, I took a shower and reached for the body lotion from the bathroom amenities—only to find it half-used. By then, I was at my limit and wanted to complain at the front desk, but it was already 1 AM, and I was too tired. We decided to sleep and address it in the morning. After breakfast, we spoke to a front desk staff member, who was very kind, apologetic, and helpful. She brought the manager, who also apologized and upgraded us to a beautiful suite. While we appreciated the gesture, this might be our last stay at this hotel. That said, the staff at Kunlun Jing’an are truly excellent—this experience was just an unfortunate exception.

Hotel was clean and sheets were extremely comfortable. Room air conditioner was cold and working well (unlike other hotels in china with controlled temperatures) which I really appreciated. Room cleaning service is great! View of the bund is wonderful, though I was only able to see the Oriental Pearl Tower as the rest of the major towers are blocked by the building right infront of the window. Privacy might be an issue as people in the opposite buildings could look right into my room and bathroom, especially at night with my room lights on. I could also clearly see whatever was going on in the opposite buildings if their curtains were not closed. That is a pity considering the large windows the hotel room had to offer, as the view is mostly blocked by buildings right infront. Though you can walk to Nanjing Road, cycling is more convenient and if thats not what you want to do, the walk may be a little far if you want to go there often. You can also walk to The Bund. Nearest metro station is Yuyuan Garden which is about a 15-20min stroll away. Overall a really good stay despite the privacy issue, if you dont mind that then this is a good choice if you would like to be further away from the hustle and bustle.

It was amazing experience for us. We’ve traveled so many places around the world, this hotel was one of the best hotels we’ve stayed in. We only stayed for 3 nights for Christmas, it’s holiday season, everything so beautiful. Great location and services, it was above my expectations except for the foods. When I booked, it didn’t include breakfast, we had to pay extra fees for it. Honestly, it’s okay to try, but not worthy (If you get it free, that’s awesome). Lots of selection, but wasn’t what I expected. It’s pricey, over $500 RMB for 2 one time only. Overall it’s perfect, I would stay there again when I visit Shanghai.

My stay at the Hyakumangoku Onsen Hotel was a unique blend of modern Japanese style and traditional onsen experience. The hotel's architecture and interior design were sleek and contemporary, creating a serene and peaceful atmosphere. However, I was disappointed to find that the hot spring was not available for couple usage, which was a major draw for me. Despite being renovated in 2021, some fixtures and soft furnishings showed signs of wear and tear, which detracted from the overall experience. On the plus side, the hotel's location was convenient for visiting Shanghai Disney Land and Shanghai Village, which offered a range of international brands for shopping. Overall, I would recommend the Hyakumangoku Onsen Hotel for its modern take on traditional Japanese hospitality, but with the caveat that some areas may need further attention to detail.

Disappointing Experience at The Ritz-Carlton Shanghai I stayed at The Ritz-Carlton Shanghai for two nights, and unfortunately, my experience was far from the luxury service I expected. 1. Discrimination at Flair Rooftop Restaurant On my first night, I visited Flair, the hotel's rooftop restaurant. Before going, I was told at the lobby that the restaurant operates on a first-come, first-served basis, with no reservations. However, when I arrived at around 5:50 PM, the restaurant was only 20% occupied, yet the host told me it was ”fully booked.” Then, the host questioned my intent, asking whether I was there for drinks or dinner. When I said ”dinner,” he suddenly mentioned a 1,600-yuan minimum spending requirement. I agreed without hesitation and ended up spending over 2,200 yuan. But what truly bothered me was the initial rejection and the selective enforcement of the minimum charge, implying that I was being judged based on my appearance or nationality. If the restaurant was truly full, why was I offered a table once I confirmed I would spend a significant amount? 2. Misleading Room Upgrade Offer & Hidden Promotions When I checked in, I had already booked a suite with a city view for around 4,000 yuan. However, the receptionist tried to upsell me a Pearl Tower view for an additional 3,300 yuan, which is an unreasonable price just for a different view. What’s worse is that she failed to inform me about an existing hotel promotion: (cant remember the amount exactly) If I pre-purchased 1,000 yuan, I could use 1,400 yuan at Flair rooftop restaurant. I only found out about this the next day and when I asked whether I could retroactively apply this promotion to my bill (which was charged to my room), I was told it was not possible because I had to buy the package in advance. Had I known about this offer beforehand, I would have gladly used it. Instead, the staff prioritized upselling me a more expensive view rather than informing me of real benefits available to hotel guests. 3. Concierge Service & Taxi Nightmare The service at the concierge was another major disappointment. I had a reservation at a Chinese restaurant across the river and asked the concierge to arrange a taxi for me. Knowing that taxis in Shanghai can be unreliable and tricky (as I had experienced the night before with an airport taxi taking me to three wrong hotels and turning off the meter), I was relieved when the concierge used Didi (a ride-hailing app) to book a ride. However, when the car arrived, the concierge instructed a bellboy to walk me to the car, but he never confirmed whether it was actually mine. Just as the door was closing, a woman with luggage rushed in, claiming it was her ride to the airport. It turned out the car was not for me but for an entirely different passenger! At this point, I was already late for my dinner reservation. When I walked back to the concierge to ask what happened, he seemed irritated and dismissively said, ”Don’t worry” before reluctantly walking me to the correct car. This lack of professionalism and carelessness was incredibly frustrating. If you’re arranging a ride for a guest, ensure they get into the correct car. Final Thoughts This all happened in just one night—I can't imagine what else could go wrong during my stay. I sincerely hope no other guests have to go through such an experience. The Ritz-Carlton brand is known for its luxury and top-tier hospitality, but what I encountered was discriminatory treatment, misleading sales tactics, and poor service coordination. I hope management takes this feedback seriously and improves their service, ensuring all guests receive fair and professional treatment, regardless of their appearance or nationality. Ps: nice swimming pool by the way!!

Excellent Service and Location My family of 5 had an exceptional experience at this hotel, thanks to the personalized service from Yeri. She provided a thorough explanation of the room details upon our arrival and was also very responsive to any additional requests via her WeChat. The housekeeping service was also outstanding. We always returned to our room to find everything impeccably arranged, and our clothes neatly folded—something that most hotels don’t offer. It really added to the comfort and care during our stay. The hotel was also very accommodating, accepting all my Taobao purchases without hesitation. While the location on Nanjing Pedestrian Street means cars can’t drop off directly at the hotel, the staff is stationed nearby to assist with luggage, which made things easier. Prime Location The hotel is ideally situated on the famous Nanjing East Road, just a 2-minute walk from Nanjing East Station Exit 2. It's close to popular tourist attractions like Yu Garden and Xin Tian Di. There are also many delicious eateries and trendy, internet-famous restaurants in the area, such as 莱莱小龙, 蟹叁宝 and 沈大成, making it a perfect destination for food lovers. Clean and Comfortable Room The room was spotless, with fresh bedding and high-quality toiletries from Le Labo, a renowned perfume brand. It's a good hotel for the price . Breakfast is average (4/10). Location is not accessible by bus; they do provide shuttle to bus station 8 am and 8pm. Hallway smells like smoke. Room clean and doesn't smell. Front desk is amazing. Three guys in the front desk are so helpful. If you are traveling for business it does the job..I can't see myself coming back with family

Stayed here for a night during a layover and it definitely exceeded my expectations! It's in a convenient spot right by the Nanjing Rd Pedestrian Mall, check-in and check-out were really swift and easy. Everything was smooth and hassle-free—would definitely stay again!

The environment is nice and clean. The room was upgraded for free. The room is large and has a balcony. The robot delivers food, which is very convenient.
