Dayin International Youth Hostel -Tianzifang & Xintiandi

9.6/10
Excellent

Good location, metro very near, loads of eating places right at door, and easy walk to some tourist areas: french concession, Tianzifang. For bund, it's either metro + walk, or bus + walk. Limited common areas: main area upstairs AC, and small downstairs area also used to store luggage,  outdoor at front would benefit from more chairs (fairly calm street). dorm beds (comfortable and solid) with curtain, light , international power outlet , aircon , locker safe for each bed; no window in my 8,  bed dorm large modern toilets/shower along corridor the promo picture shows plants at entry - they are all gone. People fairly much keep to themselves (china, traveller phone-fixation). hostel can run a lot better with standard procedures/info, and some key signs in english; e.g. common areas, laundry, breakfast (just had a sign waved at me without time to read details - don't know where to locate if I want to buy).  In fairness, at checkout, a staff member asked me how my stay was, and any comments (i had decided to move to another hostel for different location, and variety — but the second hostel really wasn't as good location as this one)

Arrived late at night near the Bund, completely exhausted and dragging my luggage, but the 24-hour front desk still greeted me kindly. When checking in, they thoughtfully reminded me about the locker and laundry room locations. The hallways were clean and odorless, and the bed was soft and warm. The cleaning staff tidied the restrooms multiple times a day, and there was 24-hour hot water available on demand. In my free time, I enjoyed chatting about travel stories in the common area, and the hosts were genuinely engaging. It's an affordable stay, yet full of thoughtful touches – a stable and healing little corner even when you're far from home.

I specifically chose this hostel to experience the old Shikumen lane houses. It's tucked away deep in a bustling alley, and you have to navigate through winding old streets and traditional iron gates to get in. Stepping inside, you're immediately immersed in the vibrant atmosphere of old Shanghai, a delightful surprise for its tranquil location amidst the hustle and bustle. The renovated old house retains its vintage wooden windows and old floor tiles, and the courtyard is filled with greenery. I woke up to the aroma of breakfast stalls from the lane each morning, and in the evenings, I enjoyed the breeze in the courtyard, fully experiencing local life. The beds come with blackout curtains, individual reading lights, and charging ports. Storage lockers are complete, and the bedding is changed daily, fresh and odorless. The bathrooms are cleaned in sections, with 24-hour hot water. The public living area is spacious, with bookshelves, board games, a microwave, and a self-service washing machine – full of thoughtful details. The owner and staff are warm and genuine, proactively sharing local hidden gems for food and off-the-beaten-path routes, helping me avoid tourist traps. Shopping districts and the subway are within walking distance, and there are old-school pastry shops all around. The value for money is absolutely amazing. It's my top choice for solo travelers and students. I'll definitely stay here again next time I'm in Shanghai!

This is a very cozy hostel, and its close proximity to the subway station makes getting around super convenient. The owner is really enthusiastic and the auntie keeps the place spotlessly clean. The bunk beds have little curtains, which is great for privacy. Even though the room isn't huge, the air conditioning works well and there's plenty of hot water. Overall, it's a great place!

I've stayed here for quite a while, and the staff are all diligent, responsible, and have excellent service attitudes, comparable to five-star service, with prompt responses. Some of the facilities are a bit old, but the sanitation is well-maintained; you wouldn't guess it's an old establishment. It's clear why it's been around for so long. Overall, it offers great value for money, and it's very convenient for business travel. If you need to take the subway, it's about an 8-10 minute walk.

I am grateful for Xiao Duan and Xiaolin for the help they’ve provided me!! Great value hostel in a top location — a few honest tips for fellow travellers The location is absolutely spot-on — right in the heart of things, couldn't ask for better. The staff were brilliant: genuinely helpful and welcoming. They gave me a disposable towel and tissues free of charge, which normally costs ¥3 — a small gesture, but a kind one that made a difference. A few honest notes if you're coming from somewhere like Japan (as I was): manage your expectations on cleanliness. Japanese hostels spoil you — spotless rooms, no smells, the lot. China is different, and this place is no exception. The toilet had a bit of an odour, and the rooms could do with more regular ventilation. It's not a dealbreaker, but worth knowing. On the plus side: free drinking water to fill your bottle, paid laundry on-site, and that unbeatable central location. The rooms themselves are decent enough nothing flash, but perfectly fine for the price. Finding the place: Google Maps is patchy in China at best. I'd strongly recommend downloading Baidu Maps or Amap (高德地图) before you arrive — they're far more reliable here. If you do use Google Maps, cross-reference the address with the Chinese name 登巴客栈 (Dengba Hostel) to avoid ending up on the wrong side of town. Overall, a solid 4-star stay — perhaps I'm slightly biased coming straight from Japan, but for the price and location, it's a sound choice.

The hotel's location near People's Square is super convenient for getting around and shopping. The environment is clean and quiet, and the front desk staff are warm and attentive. It was a really comfortable stay, and great value for money.

The place was very clean, and the facilities seemed to have been renovated and were quite good. However, the hairdryer kept overheating. And the soundproofing was absolutely terrible; I could hear every footstep outside, which was a bit scary for someone living alone. It's a bit far from the subway station, but it's not too bad if you can ride a bike.

Booked this hotel last minute, cause my favorite hotel is closing down business this month and i wanted something nearer cause I’m well versed with the surrounding areas, 1: the first red flag is the reception, mail and deliveries are all piled up and falling off shelves, it’s so dirty and humid, it looks like a hoarder’s poach, they’re no waiting chairs, so you’ll stand while they process the guests that came before you until it’s your turn !! The receptionists are very nice and helpful . 2; no room housekeeping ( you’ll have to ask for someone to come take the rubbish and give you towels or change your bedding. 3: THE FILTH!!! The filth is on level 1000/100 the grime made it hard for me to shower with my eyes open, I’m not sure if the place has a manager and if they care about the the wellbeing of the clients , because from what i saw, the cleaners don’t even bother, the floor had food stains from i think when they just opened, the sink🤮 the bathroom ( that one corner gave me the hibbigibeis) the toilet seat was broken , everything in the bathroom was broken and dirty , then my charger fell in the space which is between the bathroom glass and the bed, got down to retrieve it and i decided it was best to just a get a new charger instead. The place if cleaned and cared for would be an amazing hotel apartment, it has great amenities , a washing machine a fridge and a drying rack if you upgrade to a bigger room, a kitchenette that would be great if you are interested in cooking and staying longer and it’ has an Aldi downstairs, a gym and lots of other great places surrounding it . I really hope the owners would read this and take it into consideration and carry out serious supervision or else their property will lose value, The hygiene of the hotel does not only ensure the health and wellness of the visitors who sleep in those walls but also keeps the property value up. Dirt And filth only brings it down and puts the health of others at risk . I really hope they change standards.
