The Rock

Went to try and book a family meal but the manager would not accept a booking as we had a child. This is not a familly friendly place as it discriminates against the young, so for decensies sake I would not recommend going here. Plenty of other places to eat without the attitude all around Blackwood.

First visit for a lunchtime meal and will be returning. The premises are spotlessly clean, warm, and cosy. Traditional pub with wonderful memorabilia (Paul even took time to give us a tour, explaining the pubs history and stories behind all the fabulous artefacts). Staff are very friendly and courteous. We both had the Steak and Guinness pies, fudge cake pud and fruit crumble (which was to die for) . All meals were home cooked to perfection, hot, and plentiful (credit to the chef). Please visit the Rock pub B&B near Blackwood, you won't be disappointed 😀

My children booked an early Mother’s Day meal for me and I suggested the Rock having been many times in the past. A friendly atmosphere and the food was amazing!! Friendly staff and a pianist who played for Brotherhood of Man!! A fabulous night!! Thank you for the chocolates too!! A lovely gesture ❤️

If you are in the area do not miss the best Sunday lunch around. Proper gravy. The lamb is consistently first class The Eton mess is to die for, if you can manage it after the roast meal Service is first class, the staff are polite and friendly Other meals other than Sunday roasts are also first class, a good variety on the menu If you like plaice then this is the place to go

Rang and spoke to a very rude man. I was enquiring about vegan option was amazed in this day and age that he didn't have a clue what I was taking about. I asked if it was possible if I could talk to the chef just to confirm the vegetarian options were dairy free - was told no. He made it quite clear that my custom wasn't welcome and I was made to feel I was being awkward. Told me he was already in dispute with the local authority over an allergy issue and didn't want any other problems. Very rude. I am not the sort of person to complain but felt very strongly about this especially when I rang back to voice my complaint and wanted to speak to another member of the team the same man wouldn't let me.

I ate here on Sunday (21/01) with my mum and my boyfriend, and we all thoroughly enjoyed our roast dinners! My mum and I had the lamb which was incredibly tender, and my boyfriend said his beef was also delicious. We all had separate desserts and throughly enjoyed them too. (The chocolate fudge cake and waffles are to die for). We have now visited the Rock on a number of occasions, and have found them faultless every time. Food is delivered quickly, we have always received friendly service, and I personally enjoy the bread roll you’re offered even if you’re not having soup to start. On a Sunday especially there is often a pianist playing the piano whilst you enjoy your meals, this is a really lovely touch and he’s very talented! If I had one comment to make, it would be to make sure you arrive in plenty of time to park, as it is sometimes so full that it’s difficult to find a space (surely a good sign). I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend The Rock to others. But for families who want their children to run around or play in space during meal times, perhaps a Brewers Fayre would be more suitable. A hearty pub with lots of character and I can’t wait to return.

Food was standard nothing special or worth traveling from Newport for. 99% of staff were polite and courteous. However 1 man who rudely identified himself as the manager called me a bad parent for letting my son play on the floor after food. I would not recommend this establishment if you want a friendly atmosphere for your family and children. If you don't want kids inside your pub replace your 2016 euro trash sign with' kids not welcome'. Save time and petrol for anyone who fancies a day out.

It's a very pleasant traditional styled pub. Very comfortable. The service wad warm and friendly. Sadly for us the food was a very big disappointment. We had fish and chips at £15 each. Advertised on menu as a "sizeable" cod fillet. Have to say, quite frankly, was a very small piece of fish and quite tasteless. The homemade batter was not nice either. Small amount of runny mushy peas. The chips were bang average too. For the price I would have expected something like "triple cooked" chips. The small salad on side of plate was disappointing too. Such a shame as its a very nice place both outside and inside.

We were taking a drive around the area having come from Cardiff and saw The Rock, thought how pretty it was so decided to have lunch there. What an excellent choice! Fabulous, freshly cooked food, piping hot and such great friendly service. We had battered cod & chips and steak & Guinness pie. Desserts were bread & butter pudding, apple ie and jam roly poly pudding. Yummy. We'll be back. Thanks Paul and team for the great welcome.
