The Grand Hotel, built in 1898 (according to the sign over the door), is a luxury understated hotel in Lund – the sign over the entrance is only legible from close-up! The location is great, within walking distance of the train station and in the heart of the action for restaurants and shopping. We enjoyed the antiquity and old-world atmosphere of chandeliers, silverware, old-school service and hospitality. and even the highly polished “faux” gold taps. The breakfast was very good, with high-quality well-prepared food and a wide range of choice including caviar, meats and cheeses. One perk that we appreciated very much was the free coffee machine along the corridor. We attended a 3-course banquet for an award celebration in the ballroom; there was some difficulty reading the menu but the entrée was “catfish rum and red streak from gretagården farm fish, organic red onion & radishes from Ähus”, the main course was “lamb with leafy nettles green onions & parsnips from Ugglarp” and desert was boiled rhubarb with black pepper ice cream & baked oats – delicious. The cost of alcohol is prohibitive in Sweden and this hotel was no exception – an intriguing sign at the bar labelled “världens dryckesevent tors tis” (the world's drinking event, Thursday, Tuesday) had prices of 40 dollars for a gin and tonic, and 50 dollars for a whiskey. So, an interesting stay at this historic establishment in Lund, but perhaps out of our price range for a longer stay.
Very Good
