This is one of my favorite hotels anywhere, and I am on the road as many as 100 nights a year. A lot has been written about this place so what can I add? I guess the highest praise I can offer is that each time I’ve stayed here, I’ve felt at home. Truly. For this one week trip we had a one bedroom suite which was spacious and peaceful, giving us room to spread out and rest. The bedroom was as we like our rooms at home: quiet and bright during the day and pitch dark at night with two big step in closets, one with a dresser. The kitchen was well equipped and we ate a few meals at the dining table. The living room was more than enough for three of us to lay around comfortably and the terrace was lovely. The staff can make or break a hotel and the staff at the Chateau appears to be made up of career hospitality professionals who are at once amazingly attentive and discrete. The public areas are beautiful in the way stately old homes are beautiful. No, you will not find the slickest gizmos and displays one sees in the oversized spaces of some luxury hotels. What you will find is comfort, discretion and an interesting collection of fellow visitors. And yes, some of them may be recognizable but the vibe is, genuinely, “who cares,” as opposed to “let’s get a selfie,” or even worse, “do you know who I am?” Phew. I don’t want to short change the restaurant because it is wonderful. Again, picture eating delicious and consistent food in the garden of an old European home and you’ve got the idea. OK, so they missed a thing or two here and there, or were a bit slow at times. Really, did we care? No more than we cared about the scuff in this carpet or the dig on that table: We were too relaxed to fuss about these trivialities. Similar to the other areas of the property, don’t expect a vegas-style aquatic center back at the pool. Instead, think “backyard pool at someone’s old mansion,” but with top shelf drinks being whipped up out there. Idk what this ******* IG term “quiet luxury” means. But, if it means anything good, or if it signals the luxury of quality space, people and dining, none of which has to scream luxury to get your attention or approval, then this hotel defines it. All in all this is one of those rare places I look for an excuse to return to, and to stay a while.
