Skye Suites Green Square

Zetland|1.93km from Turkish Mosque
We stayed 20 nights in April 2022 and Skye Suites Green Square is hands down the best lodging choice I have made in Sydney in the past 15 years. My general criteria for any room is that it is quiet, can be suitably darkened at night for sleep and that the bed be comfortable. It excelled in all three elements. Further positives included a front desk that was unfailingly pleasant and responsive to requests, and available at all times. Every major box was ticked. Some general comments about the room that may be helpful to others: the bathroom lighting in really inadequate for everything except general hygiene (my wife was unable to use the bathroom to put on makeup or do her hair); the TV station choices were limited and the sound didn't work on several of them; furniture for sitting was at best comfortable for only short periods; the laundry in the room was excellent and detergent was supplied but the dishwasher was rarely used as it worked poorly; there is a light on the balcony that can be turned on and off; umbrellas were available at the front desk; there are USB ports beside the bed; the wi-fi was excellent. Some general location comments that may prove helpful to others: the location is right at the Green Square Metro station and can be accessed within minutes; there were several excellent restaurant choices within a few minutes walk; there were a couple of fast food choices close by; there was a well stocked Woolworth's Metro grocery store across the street; at the time of writing the fare for a taxi to Sydney airport was less than the train fare with airport access fees for 2 people ($30AUD) so we used a taxi - not sure about taxi fares from the airport as we took a shuttle.

Cambridge Lodge

Absolutely terrible service. I booked this place before an early flight from Sydney the next morning and it was a last minute trip due to the rain storms in NSW that weekend. During a 5 hour train journey from Albion Park (that should actually take 1.5hrs) it became clear that we weren't going to make the midnight check in time, as landslides meant we had to take a bus replacement service. I tried multiple times to contact the hotel but to no avail and so I requested a free cancellation. I didn't get another response until nearly midnight on the day of the booking, by which point I had obviously booked another place to stay. The response said that I couldn't cancel for free as it was within 24 hours of booking. The response failed to address that I had requested to cancel within 15 minutes of booking and that I only cancelled on the basis that I wasn't going to be able to get there for their check in restrictions due to the adverse weather. Funnily enough it looks like we missed a treat with the amount of reviews that mention cockroaches crawling over the beds!! I've tried about 10 times since to contact this place and have had not one response regarding this. Truly dreadful service & such a shame that it's tainted our holiday experience. DO NOT GIVE THIS CORRUPT BUSINESS YOUR MONEY! F**k you Cambridge Lodge.
Best Western Plus Camperdown Suites
4.3/569 Reviews
This may not be your regular 4 or 5 star hotel. Let's face it, the rooms are pretty small BUT they're incredibly compact, extremely comfortable, well-presented and extraordinarily clean. In fact, the entire hotel is so scrupulously clean, I knew if my mother were still alive, she'd be declaring the floors so clean ”that you could eat your dinner off them”. Plus, the staff couldn't have been more helpful and professionally friendly. Situated very close to Sydney University and RPA Hospital, there's an express bus-stop to the city right outside the hotel's door, as well as a plethora of shops, pubs, cafes, bars & restaurants within easy walking distance. Onsite undercover parking is also available, but limited - so if you need it, book your space as soon as you can. In summary, Best Western Camperdown Suites is, in these financially difficult times, is indeed fantastic value for money.
Newtown Cozy Stays

Small, the benefits are cheap, free parking is also fake, just can stop at the back of the road, not necessarily have parking spaces, security feels very bad.
The Erko Hotel
3.8/557 Reviews
My two kids and I were visiting Sydney to catch up with friends for a few days and just needed a place to crash in the evenings. I used to be a local so knew the Erko would be the perfect home base for our plans - close to transport, groceries, shopping, cafes, and sushi! The 3/4-person room was spacious and clean, the shared bathrooms in good condition (although you had to run the shower for a good 4min before the hot water kicked in! Once the temperature was good it remained steady but I cringed at the waste of water at the outset), and the shared kitchen had great facilities. Although it was noisy when the pub was open, the sound remained unobtrusively in the background (like someone having a party next door) and disappeared altogether by midnight. We were very happy with our experience overall (my kids really want to come back sometime!) especially relative to the price. The only things I would recommend they improve is to get a hot water system installed closer to the bathrooms and see if they can reserve some customer parking in the council carpark next door - I managed to snag one of the two unrestricted parking spots right outside the door on our second day but it was pretty stressful having to move the car every two hours until then. It would also be great to get provide reverse-cycle aircon and secure wifi but those aren't deal-breakers given that we had enough bedding to stay cozy and the council provides free wifi coverage in the area. If you're just looking for a well situated crash pad while visiting Sydney I highly recommend the Erko. Thanks again for a great stay.
Summer House Newtown
3.2/53 Reviews
Overall an unpleasant stay in (Billabong Gardens), which is now rebranded as Summer House Newtown, part of the Summer House hostel chain. There was a short bald Australian guy, who was notably obnoxious to deal with, and made offensive remarks about women. The manager was also a socially awkward individual to have to deal with. The location is okay, close to King Street, and many restaurants and shops. Walking distance to Broadway Shopping Centre, and city. The real problem with this hostel is with the many infantile rules that they have, the lack of atmosphere or friendliness, and the lack of cleanliness. I had bugs in my room, running around on the floor. Based on my stay, I would not want to recommend this hostel, there are better ones in Sydney.
The Urban Newtown
4.2/5106 Reviews
After reading so many bad reviews about The Urban – I decided to stay there to debunk some of these fussy reviews after being told by a friend that this hotel is after all, a great and very cool boutique hotel. I stayed at The Urban recently on a Saturday night to attend a gig on King Street. Firstly, the location of this hotel is convenient and fantastic! The Urban, situated on Enmore Road of course is close to the heart of King Street, and even better the venue I was going to was only a few blocks up, not to mention the hotel is surrounded by an array of shops, restaurants, and cafes along Enmore road too. So once you park - easy walking is your friend and access to everything that is cool in Newtown is there. For those expecting a 5-star Sheridan experience, this is not for you and maybe that is why you’ve written some of these harsh reviews. Yes, the rooms can be a little loud on and off from Saturday night revellers drunkenly walking past, however, I assume given the location you would be hard pressed to find any hotel that offers complete unbroken sleep – Newtown does not sleep after all, therefore, maybe Newtown is not for you. The Hotel advertises as boutique / Industrial style accommodation, and I believe that is what they offer. The Receptionist staff were friendly – the room was very clean with industrial touches (that’s the whole point of the cement roof, people!). The bed was fantastically comfortable (stayed in a King room), and I absolutely loved the artsy dystopian style greenery in the belly of the building that offered an obscure tranquillity while walking to your room. The Urban isn’t a break the bank cost for one night’s accommodation in this popular area of the Inner West. You will be paying for location, comfort, and cleanliness. I do agree however, the room should offer coffee pods to go with their coffee machine – just as The Urban’s amazing sister hotel The Collectionist did. All this and an 11am check out on a Sunday. We want to say thanks for having us “The Urban” and we will be back
