Horseshoe Hotel

Whitby|0.37km from Egton
Walking the coast-to-coast with friends and the only reason we booked in here was sheer convenience. Initial impressions were of a place that needed some TLC (our friend, a professional surveyor, said he wouldn't know where to begin checking the place out). Any low expectations or reservations soon dissipated. The welcome was warm and genuine, the bed was as modern and comfortable as the building was ancient and creaky. The dark green dining room had retained its 300 year old elegance despite a 20th century fireplace, but the roaring fire and high quality of the cooking were what mattered. A 'comfort food' choice of chicken and leek pie turned out to be a culinary experience to treasure - home made with thick, crunchy pastry and generous filling. It wouldn't have been out of place in a very pricey restaurant. A veggie friend remarked that the menu was obviously designed by a carnivore but the sole option of beetroot bourguignon went down well enough. The cooked breakfast menu was extensive and cooked to order. The bacon was thick (obviously not from a supermarket) and perfectly cooked. Continental breakfast options included a yoghurt, strawberry and oats. The beer was in top condition. The most impressive thing about our stay was experiencing some little, unexpected touches that, had they not been provided, would not have lowered our impression of the place, but reinforced our belief that the proprietors are genuinely concerned to give guests a great stay. Two examples: the espresso machine in the bedroom (no Nescafe instant here); and, instead of the usual trio of pre-packed ginger nuts, we had midnight munchies of home-made fruit bread and mince pie with what I assume was a local cheese, a bit Swaldaley or Wensleydaley with a crunch (I should have asked), all left on a covered cheese board in the bedroom. Wonderful!

The Inn on the Moor Hotel

I stayed at The Inn on the Moor back in 2009, and whilst its was good then, returning in November 2023, what an amazing transformation!!! The work which has been undertaken to sympathetically modernise the hotel is outstanding. The bar and restaurant have a warm welcoming and comfortable feel. The room was clean and comfortable with great views. The FOOD IS EXCELLENT!! (We wish we'd booked for the Sunday Lunch). The staff were all fantastic, helpful, and made us feel very much at home. Great selection of beers, wines and spirits in a well stocked bar and all at very reasonable prices. Would 100% recommend the Inn on the Moor to anyone looking to visit the North York Moors. We will definitely be returning in the future.

What a wonderful hotel. We have stayed on many good hotels but this surpassed them all. Lovely room with great tea coffee and hot chocolate. The biscuits in the room were very tasty and didn't last long. The staff were all friendly starting with a pre trip call from reception. Nothing was too much trouble for anyone including a request for fried bread and the lovely Gemma bringing us an anniversary treat. Spa treatments were just what was needed after some very hectic months. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend to anyone

We stopped for a few beers and something to eat. The fish and chips are the best we have ever had, better than Whitby. Staff were very friendly, Guiness was as good as it gets. Lovely and warm after a hard mornings walk .All in all a really nice time. We will be back.

What a fantastic hotel, everything was spot on including the reception desk staff, the large deluxe room, the restaurant staff and the amazing breakfast. This hotel has its own car park over the road, which we were able to use before our allocated booking in time. The staff were very attentive and nothing was a problem. The location was 5min walk from the whale bone arch and a nice 15min walk I to town. We will definitely be visiting again

Such a shame that we felt so unwelcome. We arrived 2.45, Friday 26th Aug. 4 ladies staying at our friends holiday let 5 mins down the road, The big back door was open so I asked what was clearly the chef wether we could have lunch, he said yes, as long as we ordered straight away as he finished at 3pm......ok, no problem we thought, we'll order quickly. So we go inside & see the 2 young girls to ask for a table in the beer garden area, I told them the chef had told us to order quickly. The manager/owner lady came over, 3 of our party had gone outside to rear garden but this manager /owner was overheard by our one other saying to the 2 young staff 'who's told them they could eat at this time' they replied that I'd spoken to the chef & she was clearly very unhappy! They serve advertised until 3pm. The girls who served us clearly had no training, were polite but incredibly naive in service, the ciabatta sandwiches & salad were really nice (thankyou chef) but really? Visitors should be felt welcome as much as locals & you definitely made us feel unwelcome. What a shame we won't be able to recommend your business to the guests at the hoilday home, but shall have to reccomnded to avoid.
