"The Laocheng'en Courtyard Homestay is located within Datong Ancient City and is accessible by car. Parking is easy to find within the alleyways, especially during the off-season. The homestay features a cozy courtyard and living room, and the rooms are tidy. We booked a twin room, which wasn't huge, but the bathroom was very spacious. The main draw for us was the excellent wet/dry separation in the bathroom. There's no elevator, though. The breakfast was well-prepared and satisfying. The staff were all very friendly; on our first day, they even provided tricycles for a spin around the ancient city! Overall, it was a great stay."

The first floor features an open-plan coffee and book bar, with an entire wall of books exuding the delicate scent of paper and ink. Guests are welcome to browse freely. In the afternoon, ordering a pour-over coffee and settling into a soft sofa with a book, with sunlight streaming through the glass windows, it felt as if time itself had slowed down. This isn't just a hotel lobby; it's clearly the study of my dreams! 🛏️ Impeccable Details, Beyond Expectations The room's design continues the overall artistic and literary aesthetic. Wooden furniture, warm lighting, and thoughtfully displayed local characteristics and surrounding information reveal the owner's excellent taste. The bedding was incredibly comfortable, ensuring a sound night's sleep. Even more surprisingly, the soundproofing in the room was exceptional. There was no need to worry about being disturbed by the sounds from the book bar or the street, truly achieving a peaceful oasis amidst the hustle and bustle. 💖 Thoughtful Service, as Warm as Coming Home The front desk lady had a sweet smile and proactively introduced the hotel's features and nearby dining options during check-in. Any questions I had were answered promptly, which made me feel very much at ease. This stay completely exceeded my expectations. It's not just a place to rest your feet, but a healing space where one can slow down and enjoy a moment of tranquility. I highly recommend it to all book lovers, coffee enthusiasts, and friends who appreciate aesthetics! The next time I visit this city, this will definitely be my top choice."

"If I were to rate the room alone, this guesthouse exceeded my expectations. Even though I booked a special offer room in the basement, there were absolutely no issues with ventilation or natural light. On the contrary, on a warm winter day, bathed in the soft glow of the lights, it felt like my own cozy little haven. If I visit again, I'd still choose this place. (The lady at the front desk was beautiful and kind-hearted, always willing to help and answered every question with a smile, which truly warmed my heart.) Now for the downsides: breakfast was served about a 10-minute walk from the guesthouse, which isn't a huge deal. However, the breakfast service was a world apart from the guesthouse's excellent service. The staff didn't even lift their heads when we entered or left, completely engrossed in their TV show. And they didn't provide Wi-Fi, which I consider a very basic service, right? Also, could you please avoid serving rotten fruit to guests? The breakfast quality was more about presentation than substance; it looked good for photos, but the taste left much to be desired."

"The most delightful surprise of this stay was the warmth experienced late at night. Returning from work, I found the self-service late-night snack area on the first floor still lit up, offering hot porridge and snacks. It was an absolute lifesaver for a traveler arriving late. The staff member in charge of the dining area was incredibly attentive, regularly tidying up the counter and refilling food. When they saw me getting food, they'd smile and greet me, making me feel right at home. A special shout-out also goes to the security guard at the entrance; he always proactively opened the door and greeted me kindly when I entered or left at night, which made me feel very safe. The true charm of this hotel lies in these unexpected moments of warmth."

"Traveling for business used to mean staying at chain hotels, so I was pleasantly surprised to book one of Datong's top two hotels this time. The off-season rate was incredibly good value. The facilities are top-notch, and the service was beyond satisfactory. The breakfast, in particular, was very extensive; it's the first time I've ever had steak for breakfast at a hotel! The check-in and check-out processes were simple and convenient, and they even upgraded my room proactively. I'll definitely choose this hotel first for my next business trip to Datong!"

"A very pleasant stay at the Pipa Old Inn. A very historical building, though the place is equipped with all necessary modern amenities save for an elevator. Fortunately the staff very helpful assisted us with lugging up our heavy luggage to our room on the 3rd floor. Very beautifully decorated and strategically located in the heart of Datong Ancient City. Very pleasant and helpful staff who helped us plan and arrange our trips around Datong though sadly, they weren't very proficient in English (but that's common in China). Free breakfast was included in our stay and there was a decent spread though the menu didn't change much over our stay there save for one or two vegetable dishes being rotated. Overall definitely worth a return trip and stay in Datong Ancient City."

"Modern, clean, and comfortable room, well equipped with amenities, even a remote control for the curtains. The downside is the location: far from the old town, and the surrounding area has little tourist appeal, though there are some small markets and simple restaurants nearby."

"A very cosy homestay in the heart of the very charming Datong old town. There's underground parking that goes straight to the doorstep of the B&B which is a lifesaver during winter. Absolutely loved the tasteful design and the little artistic trinkets placed all around the house. There's also a free laundry service which was very much appreciated. Master of the house is a very friendly gentleman who gave us great tips especially on the hidden gems restaurants (ask him about the awesome copper hotpot outside the city beside President Hotel). It's walking distance to the food and nightspot street across the road, and is also beside the Southern City Wall as well as the (in my opinion criminally underrated) Shanhua Temple 善化寺 which is quiet, dignified and zen, housing some of the oldest Liao and Jin Dynasty architecture and sculptures."

"My stay at Yunzhong Chaoran Pavilion (Qiuguo Hotel) was extremely satisfying! 👍 This newly renovated hotel boasts impressive, grand solid wood furniture. It's spotlessly clean, and the staff are incredibly friendly, helpful, and attentive. The hotel offers its own underground parking (just turn right after Fuyuan Restaurant to enter the garage), which was incredibly convenient. It's about a 7-minute walk to the ancient city's commercial street, yet the hotel itself is wonderfully quiet and peaceful. The ambiance is beautifully characteristic of Shanxi, and the breakfast was incredibly rich and varied – I even took a few photos! I will definitely choose this place again on my next trip to Datong!"

"Facilities: The hotel is new, and the bedding and pillows are of Atour quality and very comfortable. Cleanliness: Very clean; they even provided laundry detergent for laundry. Environment: There are supermarkets nearby, and various attractions are within easy reach, making it very convenient. Service: Truly excellent. Every staff member was exceptionally friendly, and the check-in and check-out process was very smooth. Because my train was late, they even kindly extended my arrival time."
