I arrived in late May. The weather was mostly cloudy to overcast, with temperatures hovering around zero degrees Celsius. Surprisingly, it didn't feel bitterly cold – the kind of zero where you don't need a heavy down jacket and can still be comfortable in single-layer pants. Compared to the UK (I'd just come from Shetland), the wind wasn't strong either. It was quite pleasant to walk along the beach and stroll through the town. However, the beachfront itself was rather bleak and neglected, a mix of muddy broken rocks, and some patches of un-melted ice. It was incredibly quiet, save for the occasional sound of what I think were wild ducks.
The room was pretty standard. The heating was only so-so, usually cutting out once the room reached 20°C. The shower pressure was also quite weak. Since the accommodation is built entirely from repurposed shipping containers, I could clearly hear every sound and movement from the room above mine (I was on the ground floor).
That said, for this time of year, paying 1300 RMB for a room that included a very decent breakfast, at one of the world's northernmost locations, and enjoying the unique experience of a cigarette under the midnight sun – it was ultimately well worth the price.
There is a self-funded airport bus to the hotel at Longyearbyen Airport. The hotel is isolated at the bus station. After getting off the bus, you can walk to the hotel reception in about 3 minutes. We live in a building opposite the reception, which is 3 floors high. The elevator is broken these days, so we have to take the stairs to the 3rd floor! The buffet breakfast is very rich!
A warm and comfortable place, the most kind is that there is a beautiful girl at the front desk who has been working hard to help me in Chinese, which makes me feel relaxed and kind without foreign languages.
