They seemed to lack any sense of hospitality and failed to meet basic guest requests. The hotel flies a Turkish flag outside and appears to be Turkish-owned and operated. This context made my stay particularly unfortunate, as it coincided with the 'International Uyghur Forum' hosted by the World Uyghur Congress. Some members of the delegation—who advocate for an East Turkistan ideology—behaved aggressively and with open hostility toward guests of Chinese appearance. Management completely failed to ensure a safe, welcoming atmosphere for all of their guests."

"I expected a capsule hotel like in JP but it’s a hostel. The price wasn’t expensive so was okay but I wouldn’t really stay again and get a proper hotel. Bathroom - each has shower + toilet. Both mixed both M/F which I wasn’t very impressed with. But overall even though it was a shared, it was the best part of this stay. Pods - quite small. Mine specifically had the table inside broken and smelled a bit funny. Towels were free which is great at least. Location - not very far from things but hard to find (upstairs inside a warehouse looking building). Can still walk 30min into town + less than 10 min walk to metro but I would have preferred to stay somewhere else honestly if I had known. The guy at the counter was rude as well. It could be worse and was only 2 nights but wouldn’t recommend or stay again."

She assisted me with my enquiries and went all out to provide me with options and possible solution to an issue I was having pertaining to a delivery. I like knowing that there's a mall within reach somehow so I could quickly grab a salad or quick snack on my way back in the evening. Hotel does not provide any amenities (such as bedroom slippers) or toiletries (such as toothbrush or showercap) so do prepare your own. Other than that, I will definitely choose to return to H4 Hotel Alexanderplatz on my next visit in Berlin. Thank you!"

"I just checked into the Elba Hotel in Berlin, and unfortunately, my stay got off to a very bad start. As I walked through the front door, I saw a woman standing there—no uniform, no name tag, nothing to indicate she worked at the hotel. She made no attempt to greet me. A few moments later, she seemed to realize I was a new guest and came in. With a blank expression and a voice that could have come straight from the Ice Queen in Arendelle, she mumbled a cold "Yes?"—no smile, no "Good morning," no "Welcome to the hotel." I told her I had just arrived in Berlin and needed to check in. She made a low, unintelligible noise—as if I had stepped on her foot. At that moment, I already regretted booking this hotel. Without any sign of friendliness, she demanded to see identification. I explained that I had my driver's license or a PDF copy of my passport. She seemed annoyed and dismissive. I told her I had already paid for the room through *********** and that nowhere did it state that a physical passport was required (I travel regularly for work, and this has never happened to me before). She repeated that she needed a passport. I repeated my answer. This back and forth happened three times before I finally told her I didn't appreciate her manner. I fully understand that ID needs to be verified, but the way she spoke to me was neither respectful nor professional. Eventually, she accepted my digital ID and reluctantly allowed me to stay at the hotel. I understand rules, but in an age where every service can be reviewed, a little kindness goes a long way. I was friendly and cooperative from the start; she clearly wasn't. When I told her I would review her service on Google, her tone suddenly changed. But by then, it was far too late."

"Pros: Complementary bottled water, fridge, well insulated, nice curtains that block out light. Cons: I found hairs in the bed, black and blond which made me feel really gross. No kettle in the room, I don't drink coffee so I tried to use the filter but the coffee residue made it unbearable. Also the location isn't great if you have lots of activities in the centre of town. I constantly had to change metro lines and it always took me 35 - 45 minutes to get anywhere central. Overall okay for a night or two, with some good amenities, and I can see that they've recently renovated. But they really need to pay more attention to cleanliness."

Mitte is the Berlin on the postcards: the TV tower, the museum island, Unter den Linden and the Brandenburg Gate within a walk, with both main stations on its edge. The section spans the district between the two anchors. Museum Island is 600m from Alexanderplatz, a seven-minute walk, and the Brandenburg Gate is twenty minutes south on foot. Five minutes west by S-Bahn, the Hauptbahnhof has the gate just under a mile away and the government quarter alongside it — which is why the three hotels here cover both ends of Mitte and the square itself. The IntercityHotel is the one for train arrivals, the Leonardo is the one for sightseeing on foot, and the Hampton sits two streets east of Alexanderplatz with the TV tower on the skyline.
Mitte is walkable in a way the rest of Berlin is not: the museum island, Unter den Linden and the Brandenburg Gate sit within twenty minutes of each other, and Alexanderplatz is the hub where three U-Bahn lines and two S-Bahn lines meet. The Hauptbahnhof, five minutes west by S-Bahn, is one of Europe's biggest stations and the reason so many hotels cluster along the lines that pass through it. If you are arriving by air, the airport express runs into it directly, which makes the IntercityHotel the simplest first night in the city.

Friedrichshain is where the Wall is at its longest and most photographed: the East Side Gallery runs for about a mile along the Spree between Ostbahnhof and the Oberbaumbrücke, painted by artists in 1990 and now protected. Warschauer Straße is the transport hub underneath it, with the U1 and U3 and the S-Bahn, and Boxhagener Platz, five minutes north, is where the cafés and the Saturday market are. Across the Oberbaumbrücke is Kreuzberg, and the RAW site and the clubs along the Spree are within a walk — which makes this the area to book for a weekend, not a sightseeing schedule.
Berlin's transport is the thing to understand before you book. The U-Bahn and the S-Bahn are separate networks that meet at a handful of stations, the ring line circles the centre, and one ticket covers both plus the trams and buses for two hours in one direction. From Warschauer Straße the U1 runs west into Mitte and the S-Bahn circles the city on the ring; from Alexanderplatz the U5 runs east to Friedrichshain. The Ostbahnhof, five minutes from the gallery, is the long-distance stop.

Kurfürstendamm is the shopping boulevard of the old West, with the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church at its eastern end and the Tiergarten and the zoo beside it. Charlottenburg, the district behind the avenue, holds Schloss Charlottenburg and its gardens, the Berggruen Museum and the Bröhan, twenty minutes west by U-Bahn and bus. The two hotels straddle the boulevard: the Zoo is on the Ku'damm itself, the SANA a block south on the Schöneberg side. Both are within 200m of a U-Bahn station, which makes the palace and the museums easy without a taxi, and both are on the quieter side of the city after dark.
Before you book: five practical checks
- Avoid the trade-fair weeks. Two big fairs, the electronics show in early September and the travel fair in March, fill the hotels around the Charlottenburg exhibition grounds and push up rates across the city; the Christmas markets make December busy in Mitte.
- Read what the price includes. Berlin charges a city tax of a percentage of the room rate on top of the price, and breakfast is usually extra outside the four-stars.
- Pick the district before the hotel. Sightseeing, the Wall and the nightlife sit in different parts of the city, and the S-Bahn is quick enough that the district decides what your days look like.
- Check the map pin. "Berlin" listings include districts well outside the ring, and the city is roughly eight times the size of Paris inside its boundary.
- Buy a day or week ticket, not singles. The U-Bahn, S-Bahn, trams and buses share one ticket, and the airport is in zone C, so a Berlin ABC ticket covers the whole journey.
