"Hotel Okura Kyoto was the most pleasant surprise of our entire trip. First off, you can walk directly into the hotel from the subway. After getting off the subway, you enter a shopping mall, and the walk from the mall to the hotel has a very upscale feel to it. The hotel staff were incredibly welcoming; we weren't sure how to get to the lobby for check-in from a shop in the mall, and a staff member from the shop actually escorted us there. Both the lobby and the breakfast area had a very high-end ambiance. We booked a corner king room, which offered direct views of the Kamo River. The mountain scenery was absolutely stunning, and looking out the window felt like gazing at a beautiful painting. The hotel staff, just like in a standard five-star hotel back home, helped us with our luggage, which is quite rare for the five-star hotels we've stayed at a few times in Japan. They also offer a shuttle bus service from Hotel Okura to Kyoto Station. The shuttle drivers were very polite, which was another big plus."
