Firstly, it has to be said this ‘Guest Accommodation’ is in an excellent location. Though you do need to be on Google maps to find the tiny entrance hidden next to a mobile phone repair shop. Minutes walk from the Shambles, the Minster, excellent selection of dining venues to suit all budgets. Betty’s if you can ever get in! What isn’t so fabulous is the actual accommodation. I paid nearly £200 for one night for myself and my daughter as a treat after a particularly difficult year during which we lost her father, my ex husband and my fiancé within 3 months of each other. The room was dingy, not terribly clean and the beds looked ‘thrown together’ with the bedding and very uncomfortable. The pillows were, well, I’ve thrown away better, less lumpy items. The carpet was stained and there was an unexpected and unannounced difference in level between the bedroom and bathroom floor levels. According to the cardboard key holder you are given you used to be able to choose a breakfast to be delivered to your room, sadly no more but that’s ok. Starbucks is 20 paces away. Considering they state they are guest accommodation in their defence of reviews their prices are definitely ’hotel’ and they always ask where it states 5*? Well, at the top of the page! The bathroom window could not be closed and at 5am when it poured down the gap in the guttering above the wheelie bin under the bathroom window beat a tattoo which woke us both. The woman on reception last night was the least helpful woman ever, admittedly probably due to the weather the tv lost signal so I called reception for help and advice. I was told I “need to rescan the tv”. OK, how? Where do I find the instructions for the tv or have you got them? Her response? “We don’t know the details of each tv in each room, it will be somewhere in the menu”. OK, WHERE in the menu? Response there came none. When asked if they thought it might be a good idea if they had copied the troubleshooting part of the manual if it was too much to leave the instructions in the room there was a sigh. I mean. It’s only telly. But. I’m paying top money for ‘guest accommodation’. And yes. When we checked out I said it was ok. I know. But having tried to communicate with reception last night I had no faith in any response.

I will start with the parking, I paid for secure parking however due to the hotel having noise issue the security gate to the carpark (The noise caused complaints) and second issue of refurbishment being ongoing, the gate was up to allow the building teams to park in the entrance way. This made it difficult to get out of the carpark due to there vans. When I questioned staff they were very dismissive of the issue and said they had CCTV on so it would be fine. The hotel itself is being partial refurbished and that is to revamp the very dated rooms, we were aware of this beforehand, however we were not prepared for 7am drilling and banging from the building works. In addition to this the corridors were often filled with building equipment and furniture which was ongoing throughout the stay. The room, while well proportioned, was very dated. This could have been forgiven if it wasn't for the fact the room was not clean. There were a number of stains on the carpet, the bathroom sink was stinking when used. The bath mat was moldy and the shower itself was a trickle of water, making it difficult to wash quickly. The curtains were very grubby and the room smelled very stale, the bed was adequate but we couldn't be 100% that the sheets had been properly cleaned as there was an odd smell to the bedding. The TV was of decent size but kept cutting in and out of signal when in use, which was annoying when we decided to have an early evening chilling in the room we had paid for, the WiFi was useless, if planning to work while staying here you will need to hotspot your phone. The breakfast food was OK, however the description of a wide choice of cooked food and continental breakfast dishes was over exaggerated, there was no fruit on two days and bananas on the last morning, one choice of yogurt and 3 small cereal options. The cooked food was standard: Bacon, eggs, sausages, hash browns, tomatoes, mushrooms and bean's. Toast was something that had to be requested and was more like warm bread. On the first morning my partner was served a cup with the remainder of someone's lipstick stains on the rim. On closer inspection of the glasses there were a number which were not clean. On the second night we went to the bar area to grab a couple of drinks. The bar was full of empty unwashed glasses and when we got our drinks our glasses where sticky. There was a smell of stale ale which was not appealing in the slightest. On checking out raised a couple of things with the receptionist and was meet with at best distinct lack of interest and worst just plan rudeness. Sadly this hotel did not meet the standards it professed to uphold. I would say the location and river view was pretty and the fact the parking was at the hotel itself made it one of the reasons I booked it. However after this visit I will not be visiting again as there are better hotels in York and carparks that are not much more expensive than the supposed secure parking.

Guy Fawkes Inn

In May 2022, I spent 3 days in York as a treat for my birthday. This trip was one of many solo-travels that I had planned for the year and when planning this trip and looking on Booking.com I found this hotel to be the best of the bunch on money and closeness to the town. The hotel itself was part of a pub/restaurant but my room was separate from the building in a sense as it was outside and up the stairs. The pub was incredible, the atmosphere and theme was just what I was looking for and I absolutely loved the history behind the building. The room, just as expected, fit well with the theme with vintage inspired decor and furniture, a beautiful and home-away-from-home feel to it. The room was clean, comfortable and just what I wanted for my first trip to York and only second trip travelling solo. The hotel was only a few minutes walk to the town centre and The Shambles, which was just what I wanted and it was so great that during a busy day that I could nip back to my room to drop off bags and/or freshen up before heading back out. It really is a brilliant location for anyone visiting York. The food, which I only had on one occasion as there was so much choice in York, was incredible and highly recommend even if you aren't staying, to pop in for dinner. You will not be disappointed at all! All around fantastic hotel, with a great location, food, price and friendly and helpful staff. Cannot wait to stay again, thank you

Because it was a few minutes walk from the train station, and Iyork was taking the train the next morning at 3 pm, I tried to book the nearest accommodation from the station. The first time I lived in a dormitory, I felt OK, very quiet. I regretted booking more than 30 pounds on Trip.com, and more than ten pounds in the same room.
The Fort York

The Fort is in the best location for seeing the whole of York. It was clean, welcoming, had fab little touches in the room. Rooms were spacious and well laid out. No air conditioning but as one day was particularly hot, when we returned a large fan had been placed in the room. No brewing up facilities in the room but a fabulous kitchenette on the 1st floor with kettle microwave mini fridge with various types of milk in and a large variety of hot drinks to make. The staff at Kennedys bar next door could not have been more helpful or friendly. The only downside was one of our rooms was at the front over where Manahatta nightclub next door was so the noise was loud until early hours. We had already realised this when we booked though and the Fort provided free earplugs in each room and a bowl of them in the kitchenette which we thought was going above and beyond.
Hilton York

The location of the hotel is pretty good. The castle is just outside the door. It takes more than 10 minutes to walk to the train station and more than 400 meters to the Shambles Street. The room is not big and the sound insulation is average. The bathroom water will be all over the floor. The faucet of the basin takes a long time. Hot water comes out.
Galtres Lodge Hotel & Forest Restaurant

From the amazing staff who assisted me moving my booking date, to the old world charm of this amazing building, with exposed beams and quirky layout. We love it here. We stayed in room 12 this time, again with exposed beams, it's right on the top floor so be careful if stairs are an issue as there is no lift. Our loft window overlooked the Chrisfmassy street below, with the festive live music playing in the daytime from the various buskers, it's truly magical.
