Had a lovely 2 night break away from 26th December and the hotel staff were friendly and welcoming, gave local knowledge and recommendations on where to go walking… the breakfast was good value for money and caters for both vegetarians and vegans. There may not be onsite car parking but the recommended car parking made available at the local cricket club for only £2 per day is only 4 minutes walk away and convenient. Thank you also for all the communication before our stay, greatly appreciated 😊

I have grave misgivings about hotels in the busiest parts of the Lake District, especially at holiday times. Obviously they will be relentlessly overcrowded, with harassed and unfriendly staff. I’ve wanted to go back to the Proper Lake District for a while though so took a risk on the King’s Head. It’s easy to find on the ear popping main road up from Grasmere, just beyond the impressive hulk of Steel Fell, close to Thirlemere. Parking anywhere in the Lakes is hideous and expensive. Not here. Relaxed and plenty of room. It’s a long building with a pleasant bar restaurant area and beer garden. I found a rather pleasant residents lounge where a lady called Jo checked me in and made me feel welcome. It does get busy with passing trade but the staff look after their residents. They flogged me decent real ale and Jura whisky (the proper stuff). Breakfast is briskly table served from a menu and is well presented. I didn’t eat otherwise there but the food is popular and well priced. The road outside is busy and a bit of a racetrack, and the occasional fighter jet roars between the mountains on low altitude practice, but the relentless bleating of the sheep opposite soon returns things to normal. I was a little sorry to depart, but the manager said he hoped I would come again. I believe I will, and will even bring my wife.

Room is clean, food is excellent, staff is friendly. Parking is free and so perfect for those with car.

Walking to the train station and the town center, the room is very clean, breakfast will be delivered to the room at the agreed time, there are several ways to choose eggs, I choose fried eggs, and hot oatmeal, very suitable for Chinese stomach. There are direct buses to windermere and Keswich.

I arrived on a stormy night in the lake district - on entering the hotel I was met with a warm glow from the log fire and a very warm welcome from the receptionist. As the hotel dining room was about to close, a room was sorted and the kitchen kept open for an evening meal - a delicious melt in the mouth steak was a pleasure after a 6 hour drive from the south of england, washed down with a welcome glass of Shiraz. The bed was very comfortable, the room had a large bath and separate shower cubicle and copious hot water. The decor and fittings were in sympathy with the age and history of the hotel, a pleasant change from the blandness of more modern mass market hotels. The staff were very friendly and it was a pleasure to be assisted without having to use automated impersonal systems. I will not hesitate to stay at the hotel again when I am next in the area.

The property and the ambience is lovely. The view from the restaurant garden is very pleasant and beautiful. The room size, bathroom size and amenities were good. We faced 1 major problem to be precise which made us a bit sore. Cleanliness - the room was clean except for the carpet. It didn’t feel like it was vacuumed. There was probably a pet staying in that room before us and there was a lot of hair on the carpet. I understand it is a pet friendly property and I have absolutely no problem with that. But cleaning the room properly before the next checkin is a basic expectation. We couldn’t step on the floor without our feet being covered with hair. Apart from that, everything else was very good. Breakfast was also good and the customer service was very polite and hospitable as well.

The Hotel and Staff were fantastic. A special mention to Natalie and Chad who went above and beyond during a crisis over water. They kept everyone fully informed about what was going on. If I could give a 20 out of 10, I would!!!!! Would i stay here again...yes most definitely. The rooms were big, clean and tidy. The breakfast was absolutely delicious. Outstanding, I had a superb stay ,the George is unique Whilst, having a timeless aspect ,magnificent historic building it has modern features, and aspects,that make it very comfortable. The best hotel experience, I have had for year's, I am looking forward to staying again, a perfect end to my Christmas break.

Facility appears okay but staff were not friendly and supportive. We left a football Jersey shirt in our room and was told it was not there when we called later in the day. Myself and my wife had food poison after eating breakfast on the day we checked out. The Jersey shirt could not have disappeared because I slept with it overnight before we checked out. As I said before, the facility looks new but the staff, even including the cleaners were not friendly. I am an IHG member and I use holiday inn hotels almost every where I travel to and I know how they treat their customers. However, this holiday in express in Barrow-in-Furness surprised me as the staff attitude did not meet the standard of others I have stayed in. I am not impressed.
