5-Star Hotels in Shandong, China

While visiting Qingdao, I decided to spend a day in Jinan and chose the Shangri-La. Before checking in, I called to confirm that my room was ready. The lobby is impressive, and the room was spacious, quiet, and well-equipped. The toiletries were excellent, and I particularly liked the eco-friendly bamboo toothbrushes and combs. The hotel is conveniently located opposite Quancheng Square, perfect for an evening stroll to watch the musical fountain. Baotu Spring is also within walking distance. There are plenty of malls nearby, and both takeout and dining options are easily accessible. The old city, however, is genuinely congested; it took almost 40 minutes to get to Jinan Station by taxi, and I barely made my train. The hotel also seems to offer intangible cultural heritage activities, but I didn't have time to participate. I would definitely choose this hotel again for a more leisurely trip to Jinan.

For my trip to Yantai, I chose the Hilton Yantai Golden Coast, and the experience was truly wonderful! The room was spotlessly clean, and opening the window revealed an endless ocean view. The sea view was absolutely stunning; I could just sit in the room and quietly watch the sea, which instantly broadened my spirits. The hotel is very close to the beach, just a few steps away, making it perfect for family trips. It's super convenient to take kids to dig in the sand and play in the water. Miss Winnie at the front desk was very friendly and efficient with the check-in process. Any requests we had were promptly addressed. The hotel has a fantastic beachfront resort vibe. It's just perfect for a family to enjoy the sea breeze, admire the ocean view, and relax. I highly recommend this hotel for a vacation in Yantai!

The hotel boasts a grand architectural design and numerous rooms, reflecting the style of an established star-rated hotel. Upon entering the room, there was a noticeable musty smell. However, the mattress was very thick and incredibly comfortable to sleep on. We ran out of tissues in the room, but the housekeeper promptly brought some when we requested them. There were no disposable bath liners for the bathtub, and they weren't available for purchase, which is an area where service could definitely be improved. Given its large scale, the hotel could consider offering childcare services similar to Club Med. A kids' play area with soft play structures, slides, and a ball pit would be a great addition, allowing parents to relax. There was no buffet available. With such a large property, inter-departmental communication seems to be an issue. The information provided by the housekeeper for the 1928 Beer Bar's dining options was incorrect. After checking out, the housekeeper asked for a good review. I provided some suggestions, but the housekeeper, 'Dabaitu' (Big White Rabbit), never replied. It feels like the service in northern China is often a 'do-it-because-my-boss-told-me-to' mentality, and any extra requests from guests are seen as an inconvenience. I really liked the breakfast buffet where many of the attendants were older, creating a very harmonious atmosphere, like being cared for by parents while away from home. The breakfast selection was extensive. There are two swimming pools, one indoor and one outdoor. Cat petting costs 19.9 for children and 29.9 for adults, with single entry and unlimited time. Feeding animals costs 10 yuan, which includes one portion of feed. **However, if you write a good review for 1 yuan, you get fewer carrots than the 10 yuan portion. The animals seemed a bit pathetic, with the little horse constantly kicking the wire fence.** There are two swimming pools, both indoor and outdoor. The buffet at the 1928 Beer Bar is more Western-style. Many people might not be used to it. We tried it, and the quality of the desserts was excellent! There's a beach right behind the hotel, with some rocks, but not too many. You can go tide pooling in the early morning and at night. It's too hot during the day due to strong sun, and there isn't much seafood to find then either. The package included access to the Haiquanwan Hot Springs, but I must mention: it was dirty. There were no tissues or disposable combs in the hair-drying area (only a few scattered combs for everyone to share). With this level of service, I won't be returning. The hotel's location is indeed a bit remote, making it suitable for self-driving. There's a Shandong University cafeteria and museum nearby, which I'd give five stars!

Choosing to stay at The Westin Qingdao, I was particularly impressed by the professionalism and empathy of the front office team. Throughout my stay, I could feel that the front desk staff understood how to maintain appropriate service boundaries; they were neither neglectful nor overly intrusive of guests' personal space. During interactions, it was clear the staff possessed strong observational skills, able to perceive guests' unspoken needs and provide assistance without being disruptive. When faced with various guest requests, they patiently listened to the full demands before offering feasible solutions based on the hotel's actual conditions, communicating in a very appropriate manner. Even when the lobby was busy, the front office maintained excellent work order. Facing a continuous stream of guests, they consistently displayed a positive demeanor, never appearing flustered or perfunctory. Whether interacting face-to-face or via phone inquiries, they maintained a consistent service attitude, free from double standards. As the hotel's primary point of contact, the front office not only handles basic reception duties but also conveys the hotel's hospitality philosophy. The entire experience was free of flashy rhetoric, consisting instead of genuinely practical service that made me feel incredibly comfortable. It is precisely this excellent front office service that enhanced my overall stay, and I will prioritize this hotel again on my next visit to Qingdao.

When I came to Qingdao this time, after comparing various options, I chose the Wyndham Grand Qingdao and was very satisfied with the overall experience. The hotel's location is convenient for getting around, and the interior environment is quiet and peaceful, free from outside noise. The mattress was very comfortable, and after one night's stay, all my fatigue was gone. The smart home system and Dyson hairdryer were great added touches. The cleaning was meticulous, and staff members Xiaoxiao and Lydia were responsive to all questions and efficient in their work. This hotel is perfect for both business trips and short getaways.

Great location and a very nice hotel.  Didn’t use any amenities so can’t comment on that I opted for the dinner buffet for 79RMB and it was a major disappointment.  I think the food would have been better at the airport The breakfast was also disappointing.   For a 5 star hotel - the food should have been better.

Let's be objective here, no sugarcoating. Pros: The room is very spacious, complete with a large bathtub – a five-star setup from a decade ago. It's close to the beach and has both indoor and outdoor pools, which is super convenient for water activities in the summer and great for photos. Cons: Too many to count. Even checking in at 6 PM on a weekday, our room wasn't ready. The front desk responded with a flat ”can't do it” to every request, without explanation or apology. The room was incredibly dusty, and the carpet was filthy. Traveling with a child, I had to bring my own bedding, toilet seat covers, hygiene pads, and even a water kettle. The breakfast was comparable to an All Seasons Hotel – filling, but definitely not as good as a Hampton Inn by Hilton or Holiday Inn Express.

Except for the front desk and concierge service being subpar, the service from other departments was very good. The front desk staff didn't even know the hotel's breakfast times and had to ask a colleague via WeChat, unable to answer promptly. The front desk person just told me to plan based on weekdays, when breakfast ends at 10 AM, which was completely unprofessional, especially since it should be until 10:30 AM on holidays. After check-in, there was no guidance on where to take the elevator to the room, let alone any concierge assistance with luggage. Absolutely no service. I give a huge thumbs down to the front desk staff who assisted me that day. Also, the hotel package included a free minibar on the first day, but the front desk told me all minibar items were chargeable. Currently, there are no drinks in the mini-fridge in my room, making me doubt if I remembered correctly. I did like the cappuccino at breakfast; it was quite thoughtfully made. One major flaw, though, is that the countertop by the sink in the bathroom is too small; there's no space to put anything.

The hotel service was great. The front desk staff upgraded my room and proactively asked if I needed more bottled water. The breakfast selection was quite good, and the taste was decent. The hotel is conveniently located right across from Metro Line 2, making transportation very easy. There are also many restaurants nearby, including seafood, Japanese cuisine, and a shopping mall.

I've stayed at Marriott for many years, and honestly, I haven't stayed at Shangri-La much, but this time, traveling with my child, it felt incredibly comfortable. 1. Even though it's an older five-star hotel, there wasn't a hint of old smells in the room, and it was very well-maintained. The bathrobes were even covered in disposable bags – a small detail that many other hotels could learn from! 2. The location is super convenient: a 10-minute walk to May Fourth Square, 2 minutes to MixC shopping mall, and a subway station right downstairs. It's a prime spot, great for family trips. 3. The hotel staff were so warm. My little one has a bit of rhinitis, and when I mentioned it to the concierge, they immediately arranged an air purifier. They also quickly provided extra pillows when requested. Every request was met promptly and without delay, which was very satisfying. 4. Traveling with my child, this trip created wonderful memories. I would definitely choose to stay here again.
