Nice modern hotel located in the French Concession area, easy to get rental bikes around the corner and roads have bike lanes for easy riding. This area is full of great cafes and bars. Hotel staff are friendly and pick up drive way up front is easy for DiDi cars to pull up. Overall a good stay and recommended for couples or group of friends 👍
A week at Ascott Hengshan Road felt like having a home nestled under the shade of plane trees. The apartment-style rooms truly cater to the needs of longer stays—the open kitchen allows for simple cooking, and a washing machine and dryer are fully provided. Spending weekends lounging on the sofa, watching the plane tree leaves sway outside the window, felt so much more comfortable and relaxing than a standard hotel.
The location is absolutely superb; Hengshan Road Metro Station is just a three-minute walk downstairs, making it convenient for getting to Jing'an Temple and Xujiahui. In the evening, a stroll to the nearby old villa district, as the streetlights came on and the shadows of the plane trees danced on the red brick walls, created an absolutely enchanting atmosphere.
The concierge staff were incredibly thoughtful, even providing a handwritten list of recommended local shops. My only minor suggestion would be for the bedroom curtains to be a bit more blackout. But overall, it's absolutely perfect for anyone wanting to experience Shanghai at a leisurely pace. I'll definitely stay here again on my next visit.
The location is excellent, and the garden villa setting is quite charming. There's a quaint cafe and a villa-style restaurant right at the entrance, giving off a very vintage vibe. It seemed like a popular spot for young women to take photos.
However, perhaps due to it being an older property, our room had a distinct musty smell. The room was small; if you're traveling with a lot of luggage, I'd highly recommend booking a larger room type, as there wasn't even enough space to properly open our suitcases. The bedside table and walls showed visible signs of mold, which was extremely uncomfortable. I strongly suggest the management addresses this issue.
Regarding service: We arrived past 9 PM and couldn't find parking. We called the front desk, and a staff member came out. But after watching us park, she simply vanished, leaving us to search for the reception for quite some time. We were expecting complimentary welcome drinks or restaurant vouchers, but neither was offered nor even mentioned. They didn't even tell us when or where breakfast was served 🥲😂. Breakfast was also very basic. While it was enough to fill us up, it wasn't anything special.

Let's start with the positives. The hotel's location is extremely convenient; it's just a few hundred meters' walk from the subway station, making it easy to get around by both subway and taxi. The surrounding area is full of quiet, charming streets, which made for a very pleasant stay. We spent two days just strolling around the neighborhood and absolutely loved it. Hengshan Road and Wukang Mansion are both within easy walking distance. The room wasn't huge, but it was clean and comfortable. Any issues we encountered during our stay were also resolved quickly and efficiently. The only drawback is that the hotel's two more famous, historic villa buildings were closed for renovation, and we had specifically chosen this hotel for its historical charm.

I had a one-day staycation for National Day. I spent the week before the holiday searching for a hotel and was overwhelmed by the options available in Shanghai. Even the most expensive hotels often have discerning guests who are dissatisfied. I felt anxious after looking so much, so I finally followed my instinct and chose CHAO. I had been to Shanghai Film City many times before, but I hadn't realized there was a hotel behind it. The hotel just opened this year, and the interior is brand new. Inspired by the film ”Seventy-Two Tenants,” it has 72 rooms, each simply named with numbers. This led to numbers like 14, 44, and 13, which are often considered auspicious in Chinese and Western folklore. The staff initially assigned me room 13, but I didn't like it. I asked if I could choose the lucky number 28, but was told it wasn't possible because it was a more expensive suite with a significant price difference. I was then assigned room 25, which wasn't a good number either (at least it was 25, not 250...), but I didn't want to embarrass the staff, so I agreed. The staff said I could ask for a lucky number card at the front desk before checking out the next day. When I checked out today, no one at the front desk mentioned this, so I gave up. I was quite satisfied with the room itself. There was a takeout stand outside the door, so the staff could bring food upstairs without leaving it on the floor. The 2-meter king-size bed was soft and comfortable, making it a relaxing place to watch a movie. The mini bar had a large bottle of Evian water, and there were drinks like sugary cola, sugar-free cola, sugary soda, sugar-free soda, juice, and oat milk. I hope they'll stock up on milk in the future. I can't get an oat latte, but I love lattes, and seeing the capsule coffee machine, I was disappointed I couldn't make my own. Thankfully, they also had tea capsules, and the hot Lanxiang oolong I made with the machine was delicious and perfectly heated. The welcome dessert was spotless; the korma, nut tart, and snowflake crisps were all delicious. The bathroom, shower, and bath were separated, and the toilet temperature, showerhead water flow, and bathroom drainage were all impeccable. The only problem was a stubborn black stain on the wall below the sink next to the toilet. I wiped it, and it looked like a mildew stain, not a stain I hadn't cleaned properly. I hope the hotel can find a way to clean it up. The bathroom was fully stocked with amenities. Besides the standard toothbrush, comb, and shower cap, they thoughtfully provided a small bottle of mouthwash, dental floss, and cotton swabs. A housekeeper provided turndown service, setting out cups and slippers, and even gave us two extra bottles of Evian (which came in handy the next day on the City Walk). The semi-buffet breakfast, which lasted until 2 PM, was a key reason I chose CHAO. For those who prefer not to wake up early, brunch is a real relief. There were three all-you-can-eat menus in Chinese, Japanese, and English, each with a perfectly balanced portion and delicious flavor. I highly recommend the Jianbing (Chinese and English)! The restaurant staff was also very helpful, always clearing away empty plates. Due to time constraints, I didn't explore the public areas like the gym or library. We'll see you there someday.
The hotel's biggest selling point is its location; it's right outside Exit 3 of Hengshan Road Station on Metro Line 1. However, the hotel is quite dated and not well-maintained.
I was initially assigned a room on the second floor. Upon entering, there was a strong musty odor, and I noticed mold around the faucet. I called the front desk, and they said they'd address the smell, but all they did was spray air freshener. The combination of mildew and air freshener was truly awful, so I requested a room change. I was moved to the third floor, but that room also had a musty smell. They then offered to bring an air purifier. Fine, I suppose I'll just have to tolerate it for the night.

This hotel boasts an excellent location, with Xujiahui Library, the Xuhui commercial district, Shanghai Jiao Tong University (Xujiahui Campus), Xu Guangqi Memorial Park, the Catholic Church, and Wukang Building all within easy walking distance. It's incredibly convenient for exploring and dining in the area. The breakfast was delicious, and the hotel staff were very friendly and accommodating. We were able to get a one-hour late checkout, and luggage storage was also very convenient. As a thoughtful touch, they even provided complimentary water and a small cake upon checkout.
We had amazing 4 night stay at Blackstone. I have been to Shanghai for 30+ times and this stay is the best one!
The location is convenient, right in the middle of French Concession. All cool spots are within walking distance and all farther destinations in Puxi are within 10 mins DiDi ride (15-20 RMB)
Although breakfast line is small, it is just right what you need. I love the freshly made sunny side up and dumplings. Salad are very fresh. Croissant is phenomenally great.
Hotel staff are helpful and very attentive to details — service with warmness.
Totally recommend for those who really want to embrace the “real” Shanghai experiences.
The Shikumen-style garden villa is truly stunning, and my mom loved it. It has five floors. Our housekeeper, Lynn, was incredibly welcoming and promptly attended to any requests. Breakfast was available in the restaurant or delivered to the room. The pork pan-fried buns and spring rolls were delicious! Afternoon tea was served daily with a carefully selected cake from the French bakery. The lemon tart was incredibly sweet and sour. The evening cocktails were also incredibly flavorful. I'll definitely go for the French dining experience next time I have the chance.
The hotel is in a unique location, located on Tai'an Road, in the middle of a group of historical buildings. It is very close to Wukang Road on foot, and you will pass by a very good Shanghai restaurant.
Environment: The overall building is a historical building, old but unique, with its own small garden. It was very comfortable to sit downstairs at night in April. Or walk to the nearby streets, which are all great historical buildings.
Hygiene: Overall it is okay, but there is a lot of dust under the bed, and there are oil spots on the small sofa fabric, which has room for improvement.
Service: There is a refrigerator in the room, and the drinks placed in advance can be enjoyed for free. Small gifts such as foot patches are also given, which is very warm. Although there are not many types of breakfast, the taste is good and it is comfortable to eat.

Shanghai Hotels Booking Tips
Book early (3-6 months in advance) for busy periods like National Day (1-7 Oct) or May Day holidays (1-5 May), or major China holidays.
Check trade fairs & events dates: Big trade shows (e.g. China Import Expo in November, Auto Shanghai in April), which can lead to higher prices and lower supply.
Save with deals: New Trip.com users can enjoy 8% off.
Stay smart: Try areas like Jing’an or Xujiahui - they're easily accessible via Metro Lines 1/2/10, but cheaper than the Bund, Nanjing Road, or Lujiazui.

GGuest UserReally lovely hotel and great staff. Everything was clean and well taken care of. The property is nice, the restaurants are good, and service efficient. The location is quite convenient as well. I’m very satisfied with my stay.
GGuest UserPersonal experience, I brought my child from Guizhou to the Affiliated Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat Hospital of Fudan University (Fenyang Campus) for adenoids hypertrophy surgery. Because I was in a hurry, I didn't take pictures of the room. It was close to the hospital, the environment was good, the boss was very enthusiastic and patient, and the luggage storage and delayed check-out could be negotiated in advance. After that, I came to Shanghai twice again, and I contacted him directly to stay. When he didn't have rooms, I had to stay at other places. In comparison, his house is much better than other peers in the same area and price.
GGuest UserThe front desk people are super nice! Not only did he have a good attitude, but when there were no other guests checking in, he also took the initiative to introduce travel options and nearby check-in spots. The location is very convenient to various places. There are convenience stores nearby and the prices are affordable.
GGuest UserThis trip to Shanghai with my children was a fantastic experience! Although there's no front desk, check-in was efficient and quick, allowing us to settle in quickly even with our children. The hotel is in a prime location, with easy access to the subway and taxis, making it easy to get to various attractions. The staff was friendly and attentive, promptly resolving any issues we encountered. Thank you so much! The room was clean and cozy, and the children had a blast. I'll definitely stay here again next time I'm in Shanghai!
GGuest UserThe room is tidy and clean, the front desk staff is also very good, near the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, the surrounding Shanghai-style buildings 🏠 are also very beautiful.
TThomas in ChinaNice hotel in the French Concession area. Great location close to South Shanxi Metro, lots of restaurants and cafes. Rooms comfortable and cleaned daily. Free access to washing machine provided.
