This hotel boasts an excellent location right in the heart of George Town. It's directly across from the bus terminal and offers easy walking access to the Seven Streets Market (Chew Jetty), Kimberley Street Night Market, and the Street Art area. The front desk staff are warm and welcoming, the rooms are spacious and clean, and the facilities are comprehensive. It's definitely our top choice for accommodation when visiting Penang and comes highly recommended.
Our room faced the TOP building directly, so we had a perfect view of the New Year's Eve fireworks and the sunrise. Since I was traveling with friends, the hotel front desk was very thoughtful and gave us connecting rooms. The hotel is right above a night market, and not far from 7th Street Bazaar, the mural street, and banks, making it very convenient for getting around. We managed to visit all the must-see spots. There's a gym, but the equipment is old, and currently, only the dumbbells are usable.
Kek Lok Si Temple, located at the foot of Crane Hill in Penang, Malaysia, spans 12 hectares and is the largest Chinese Buddhist temple in Malaysia, as well as one of the largest and most magnificent Buddhist temples in Southeast Asia.
The temple was founded by Venerable Miao Lian, abbot of Yongquan Temple in Fuzhou Gushan, starting in 1891 and fully completed in 1904. It was named for the mountain's resemblance to a crane spreading its wings and its scenery, which evokes the Western Paradise. The architectural complex blends Chinese, Thai, and Burmese styles.
This hotel offers incredible value for money, especially for ***** New Year in February! It's an absolute steal. The hotel boasts a pool, a beach, and a gym. The rooms are incredibly spacious, offering direct sea views, and housekeeping is on point with daily cleaning. The breakfast selection isn't huge, but it's decent. For just over 400 RMB including breakfast, I honestly don't think any other hotel in this price range can compete at this time of year. Downstairs, just across the road, there are two convenience stores and a few restaurants. For more dining and shopping options, I'd recommend heading straight to Gurney Plaza, which is less than 4 kilometers from the hotel. The only downside is that it's quite a distance from the airport, over 20 kilometers away.
Our stay in the Coast Suite was great! It had two separate rooms, which was perfect for our group as we had different schedules and didn't disturb each other. We shared a bathroom. The hotel facilities were complete, and toiletries were promptly replenished. We noticed the toilet was leaking after checking in, and maintenance sent someone to fix it right away. The Indian housekeeping staff was polite and enthusiastic, and the front desk receptionists were attentive and responsible.
Staying at The Royale Chulan Penang at the end of the year, I was immediately struck by the hotel's exquisite environment. The understated luxury decor combined with immaculate attention to detail truly conveyed a sense of high-end quality. But the most memorable part of this trip was the warmth provided by a lobby staff member named Devika.
Her fluent Mandarin made communication effortless. From the thoughtful guidance during check-in to her meticulous assistance when I checked out on December 13th, everything made me feel incredibly comfortable. Before I left, she proactively helped me call a taxi and confirmed the vehicle details; these thoughtful gestures alleviated the fatigue of travel.
”Malaysian Hospitality” is not just a slogan in Malaysia; it's a genuine sentiment that Devika embodied through her actions. This warm service added an invaluable memory to my trip to Penang.
Facilities: Good
Cleanliness: Good
Environment: Good
Service: Excellent, especially the female staff member named Devika in the lobby. She speaks Chinese and provided exceptionally good and attentive service.
Hotel reception to restaurant staff are polite and professional. They even what's app me after check in to check how is my stay. Breakfast variety and quality is good. Will come back in future
Facilities: The hotel has a full range of facilities, though I didn't use the laundry service.
Hygiene: Decent.
Environment: Pleasant scenery, close to the sea.
Service: The front desk staff were friendly and efficient. Room service was also of good quality.
By far the best hotel I’ve ever stayed, staff were fried my and with polite attitude, one of the staff made initiative to approach me when I’m having difficulty on using the laundry machine. Clean and chic, had a best experience of staying there. Nearby has the famous bakery, massage place and walking distance to food streets and nice cafe. A friendly heads up that the hotel entrance is facing towards the Eastern Oriental Hotel as opposed to Kenny Hills bakery.
Indicated for birthday celebration, ignored remark, no service or extra wow service.
Requested for bouquet to deliver to room upon receive, reception keep it till evening until we call to request and reception request guard to deliver to us.
Overall hotel grade conventional hospitality. No wow service or beach grade 4 stars feel.
Parking need to walk very far to next building of you reach on weekend and if there is event.
Noisy and dirty beach due to abandoned wood branches and no maintenance

SSkumar1973Trip.com should have highlighted that on the day we checked in there was a fire drill!
We could jot sleep or rest after our long drive to the hotel. Rooms very old and outdated. Bathroom was small, the bidet was on the wrong side of the toilet.
Air-conditioning was not working! Maintenance had to chg the filter but still it was bad.
Room slippers was the worst, rooms carpet was coming off the metal ***** almost cut my feet.
Breakfast and the staff was a plus, but overall very noisy the room, thet need to call the pest control, I think rats running in the vents!! Great free parking but you have to take a long drive back to the lobby, a huge turn around from the parking... bad experience overall.
GGuest UserLarge rooms with minimalist decor means there are huge empty spaces. Ideal for families and there are quite a lot with lots of kids in pool. No coffee or tea making in rooms but you get 2 drink vouchers a day to redeem coffee or pretty cocktails. Housekeeping could be better. I was there for 5 nights and the room was not made up on 2 occasions by even 4pm. Had to call them. Cleanliness could be better. Otherwise a pleasant stay. Only less than RM10 and 10-15mins from Sho to Georgetown. Not an issue on location.

AAlex 6226Service everything very good , fast reply and helper. Just the facilities floor is close the child playing sound is louder and noisy. So far everything is ok and location are best.

AAmira AzzetI hope golden sands could upgrade/update to faster check in procees. Been there few times but check in procees quite a hassle. Then i specifically booked 2 room with king bed but end up getting 1 room with king bed & the other 2 double bed. We did arrived late around 4.30pm but then still need to wait for the other room to be ready. Really consume lot of time. Plus, receptionist said will send me the key to the other room in 20mins. But 20mins nobody knock/call our room. So i called the counter & this indian lady said need me to come collect. I am way too tired, so told her NO because just now during check in they said will send the key to our room. Ahh really not a good start. They did send the key though. But 1 dissapointment led to another. Other than that, all good. I love everything about golden sands except for their service.
IIsabelleyishaThe hotel location is right on the hot spot of Georgetown. But it goes with noise at night until 2am. So if you plan to be partying at night it's ideal and walking distance to Love Lane and all Georgetown touristic areas.
But if you wish to sleep and relax after midnight definitely not the right hotel for you.
The room was OK in terms of size but a lot of mosquitoes coming from the bathroom drain. I've killed at least 50 of them thanks to a mosquito raquet 🤣 The tip is to close the bathroom curtains so they don't get in the bedroom.
Humidity in the room had the paint peeling off.
For the price I don't think the room quality was enough. Specially for the humidity and mosquitoes combination.
The breakfast menu was not available but you can easily go down the street and eat at ease or order with the application grab. No bar available in the hotel.
The shared areas are clean. Loved that you have to take off your shoes at the entrance.
There are stairs to get into the hotel but they help you with your luggage. The first time you arrive you need to ring the bell for them to come open for you. Small door not easy to spot at first. I suggest to the hotel to stick the name directly on the door at eye level and big to avoid confusion. I've uploaded a picture of the door for you to not get lost.
After you check in they will give you the door code so easy for you to get by.
Staff has been helpful when asked but not interacting or giving you suggestion or asking you how things are going.
I've rated cleanness average because there was a lot of hair in the bathroom when I arrived. Had to literally take it off during 5 minutes. Thick long hair... Not sure how they didn't spot it.
Apart of that they were cleaning all right the rest of the stay.
Internet was not easy to get when in the room but in common areas or close to the door of the room works better. Don't save on a sim card and buy at the airport for having internet at all times on your phone. Will help you with maps and outside anyway.
The taxi from the airport was very convenient only 30 minutes and I ordered with grab came within 5 minutes.
Hope this information helps 🌹
