The food was just okay, nothing to write home about.
However, the service was incredibly attentive. Compared to the more professional, sometimes formal, friendliness you find in hotels in Europe, the US, or even China, the staff at the Old Cataract Hotel were genuinely warmer and more enthusiastic.
The views were absolutely breathtaking. The moment I stepped onto the balcony from my room and saw the Nile, it made the entire stay worthwhile. Personally, I feel that simply unwinding at the Old Cataract for a day is the most rewarding experience Aswan offers. Honestly, places like Philae Temple and the Unfinished Obelisk were just alright; the real grandeur of temples is in Luxor, and obelisks are mainly just photo ops. The Nubian Village, for me, was quite ordinary, but that's down to personal preference. While Abu Simbel isn't strictly an Aswan attraction (so I won't go into detail about it here), it's definitely still worth seeing.
All in all, I highly recommend this hotel. If you're planning to spend a night in Aswan, it's an absolute must-stay. However, if you're not staying here, you might actually consider skipping an overnight stay in Aswan altogether. You could visit Abu Simbel, then head directly to Luxor, perhaps just stopping briefly in Aswan during the day.
Everything was great – the facilities are brand new, the service was excellent, and it was very quiet. The only minor issue is its location, as it's quite far from the city center, about 12 kilometers away. Be prepared to pay $30 if you choose to use the hotel's car for a trip downtown.
The scenery is quite good. The service attitude is quite average. I went to the front desk and asked if I could pay for the room in Egyptian pounds. My attitude was extremely harsh. I didn't want to move to the hotel on the second night, so I inquired about extending my stay. The front desk asked me to go back to the room and call me. In the end, I didn't receive a call, so I checked out directly. The rooms in this hotel are quite large, and the facilities are relatively old. It feels like they are chosen by locals. In addition, you must choose the number of people according to the actual number. I accidentally selected one person, and ended up paying a price difference of dozens of dollars.
The check-in process became a bit unpleasant as their stated policies did not match what was written in our trip.com booking confirmation. This included check-in time and number of guests for the room. We included our children and even had their ages listed in the confirmation. Upon check-in we were told that it was only a room for two adults. We were then instructed to pay extra for one child. Policies should be conveyed clearly when booking so we can know what to expect.
Otherwise, the room had a beautiful view and the kids enjoyed the large pool. The breakfast buffet had a great selection.
Omar El Khayam cruise is most famous for sailing Lake Nasser exclusively spreading into the Nubian Kingdom.
Part of the itinerary is visits to archeological projects and a visit to the famous Abu Simbel Temple on the western bank of the Lake. Our uniquely designed and elegantly furnished royal suites provide a cozy and comfortable environment.
Enjoy Abu Nawas restaurant with its unique classy authentic Egyptian and international dishes complimented with fine drinks.
