Although both are among China's most developed cities, Shenzhen is generally slightly more affordable for most travellers. Shanghai offers a wider range of tourist attractions, luxury hotels and international dining options, which can make it more expensive, especially in central areas.

🚅 How to get from Shanghai to Shenzhen?

The distance between both cities is approximately 1,220 kilometres (758 miles), but travelling between them is very straightforward thanks to China's excellent transport network. Most travellers are torn between taking a flight or the high-speed train.

✈️ Shanghai to Shenzhen flight

The Shanghai-Shenzhen flight is the quickest way to get there.

• Flight duration: around 2 hours 30 minutes.
• Airports: depart from Pudong (PVG) or Hongqiao (SHA) and arrive at Shenzhen Bao'an (SZX).
• Average price: around ¥500 - ¥1,500 (£55 - £165), depending on the season and how far in advance you book.
• When is it worth it? If you have a few days and want to make the most of your trip.

Mind you, between travelling to the airport, security checks and boarding, the total time is usually around 5 or 6 hours.

The Shanghai-Shenzhen train is a very comfortable and increasingly popular alternative.

• Stations: Shanghai Hongqiao and Shenzhen North.
